Sheer laziness or procrastination. When we first moved to BC we got a call from a member of the BC AS club inviting us to a rally. But it was a fishing derby, and neither one of us ever learned to fish. Also most of the rallies advertised on this forum seem to be a huge distance away from where we live, and when we take time to camp, it's usually either within a one-day's drive or our favourite southwestern desert places.

Idroba: On the Alaskan camper who cozied up to your AS-- just possibly these folks felt spooked in a more wild, isolated kind of camping situation. You probably gave them a feeling of security.

I expect you are correct, but it still ticked me off. I guess I don't feel that I want to be someone's security blanket. Parking next to me as they did made me feel insecure... lol. What were they up to? BTW, I never saw them, they never came out of their rig.

Ah well, it was only one night and they were gone early in the morning. Just one more camping experience in the far north.

LOL, like most WBCCI pro/con discussions, they sound like ESTJ folks trying to convert INFP folks into ESTJs after getting the results of their Myers Briggs test, not yet realizing that personality types are neither right or wrong...just different.

Not knowing what ESTJ and INFP even were, I looked it up and took the test— which should tell you something right there. I come up as an INTP-T ("Logician").

I hear you. Kinda like when you go to the men's room and there are 12 vacant urinals. And the next guy chooses the one right next to you.
What's that all about?

Solitary Club Membership has its own rewards

Rich Luhr publishes a First Class, full color magazine of Airstream owners and destinations where Airstreams seem to gather. The text is well written and edited by the author(s) and magazine staff.

The magazine covers a wide spectrum of Airstream owners. For the price of $24 for four quarterly issues, it is well worth the money for those of you wanting to experience or be introduced to other Airstream activities. Even though I have high regard for the magazine, my complimentary subscription, given when I purchased our 2014 Airstream, expires with the next issue. I will not renew.

This applies also to the dedicated Rally Organizers. It is a lot of work. The first Rally is the most difficult. Many Airstream owners look forward to these Rallies to meet old friends and a confirmed date to mark on a calendar.

Even so, either I am not ready to participate or just biologically not interested and will never be able to make that change.

I wish Rich Luhr continued success in his well written magazine. I wish all of the Rally organizers the same. It just does not interest me, although I do read the Airstream Life from cover to cover.

Groucho Marx saying in "jest" while resigning from the Hollywood's Friar's Club in 1949 "Please accept my resignation, I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member."

I also reserve any option(s) to join a group or not to join a group.

Since my interests differ from the majority of Airstream owners, I am one of the two members of my own club. My wife is the other member in good standing. There are many individuals whose interests are solitary in scope. I could make a long list of my activities that do not require other people to participate to make it enjoyable.

Talking to myself is one.

Another is avoiding those using the urinal next to me and asking me where I am from....

I'd call all this talk about the WBCCI sadomasochistic equine necrophilia,

but that is beating a dead horse.......

*******

And may your view at the next Rally be that of the horse leading in front of you.

Equine Anus Nebula... is the correct Latin terminology.

Ray,

Sounds as though you and I are cast from the same mold in this respect!

Mostly for my wife's sake, I have made an effort to get involved with large social groups, but have learned that it is just not me!

Last effort was a cruise, which was awful for me - but at least, I think she enjoyed it, so I put on a brave face... sort of!

I am not, I hope, antisocial, but I prefer other people just a few at a time, and not in large numbers in an over-the-top, forced, partying, atmosphere!

Hopefully there is still some room for all of us curmudgeons in this world!

I'm always happy to have a beer and a chat with a friend - just one or two at a time though, not a gang of 'em!

Brian.

Why does anyone care if other people join clubs or not? Do what you want to do and let other people do the same. And spread a little kindness, something that seems to be in short supply these days.

Cheers,
John

I am not sure I understand the purpose of this thread. Is it to provoke negativity. Sounds as though it is. I can think of many reasons to join WBCCI after doing minimal research. The list would be quite substantiation for sure. In order to give an opinion as to why someone does not want to join WBCCI implies that the only input of ideas of the club are negative. This not the case I assure you. Most of my experience over the last 6 years have been positive. What is needed are people that love Airstreaming and people that Airstream to come together positively and leave behind the naysayers etc. I thought that Airforums was supposed to be a vehicle to promote the love of Airstreaming and all of the activities associated with owning one! I have enjoyed the threads put forth on a variety of issues from "What to buy, How to fix, Look at what I have done and how I did it, how exciting is that. I for one frown on the negative and will try to stay away those negative threads.

You assume too much, sir.

I have no opinion of your opinion.

I simply made the mistake of calling out the obvious:

This subject is going the way of hitches, tires, and tow vehicles.

Not really in keeping with why I wouldn't... Just wanted to share our experience with the joint Sierra Nevada- Northern California units rally at Prosser over this weekend. We were able to get away on rather short notice for a trip to the California coast and the Prosser location is right on the way. We pulled in to introduce ourselves and ended up staying the night. We could not have received any nicer welcome! Everyone was anxious to welcome us! Great conversations about shared interests, not just Airstreams and a fantastic sourdough pancake breakfast in the morning were just the highlights of our visit. Prior to our visit, we really weren't seriously thinking of joining. Now we are torn on which group to join as they each have their preferred way to camp. I think probably "at large" and attend both units functions will offer what we will like best. Thanks for the hospitality and the great breakfast! Vern, Barb, Bailey and Bogart

You could join both, one as a primary member and one as an affiliate. That would gain you something an at-large membership does not get you— it puts you on the mailing list for both groups so that you can keep abreast of what they each have planned. You only have to pay International dues once, and Unit dues to each unit. I belong to two units and pay $10 unit dues for each, no difference in price from the $20 at-large "no-unit" dues.

I am glad to hear of your positive experience. We have joined other WBCCI units as affiliate members. This gives you the personal connection to more than 1 unit. This also entitles you to their newsletters and or email info on their events. Affiliate fee is the same as their unit fee (pretty minimal, I am sure).

Marriage is a great institution, but, who wants to be institutionalized? (Happily institutionalized for 39 years... I won't answer for my bride..)

As for 'not' belonging.. well, that is one's personal choice based upon their own reasons/personality(ies).. :roll eyes: And I think we all can appreciate what may justify such a choice... of course, you don't need my approval...

But, consider this... Although I have been deeply involved with "motorcycle groups", mostly the 'Harley Owner's Group' (HOG), I still think there can be 'benefits' from being a 'member' of a certain 'group'...

The key benefit, to me, is that 'belonging' creates a 'pool' of voices on matters associated with the 'group'. For instance, as HOG members, we were able to be a solid resource who communicated to our 'elected officials'/masters, our 'approval/disapproval/pleas' of their antics directed toward the sport of 'motorcycling'.

This capability of being one 'voice', resembles 'lobbying'... and we were able to provide significant input to the 'legislative process' in respectful, thoughtful and cognizant manner.......at least with regard to Motorcycling in Texas and a couple other states that I know of. Along the line, we were able to state how many 'constituents' we had...and how THEY felt... It was tedious... but,.. This is the way we in America tend to deal with things...

Now, for our 'sport' of 'camping'... well, I am sure we have some areas of 'unity'. Getting our 'voice' to the governmental or RV maker processes becomes easier when we are 'members'... even for communication with 'Thor'....

Bottom line.... sometimes we need others... such as turning to this forum with questions....and being a 'member'... well, that may make a difference.. every vote counts!

There's nothing wrong with exchanging views on why people do or don't join the WBCCI; it certainly makes for interesting reading.

Personally, I'm not a member and nor will I be, but I'm always interested to hear other people's opinions, either way; the broader the view the better. Yaysayers and Naysayers are all welcome, the only common thread is an interest in Airstreams. As someone else said, vive la difference.
