On the Road to Du Quoin

The latest news in our area is that flooding along the Missouri River in Iowa is going to translate into more flooding along the Mississippi River in this area. The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri is expected to be above flood level by the end of the week which will compound existing problems with seep water beyond the levee system. Routes that could be impacted by this round of high water would include Illinois Route 3, Illinois Route 146, and to a lesser extent Illinois Route 127. The state highway department has raised the elevations of these roadways several times so water covering pavement to the extent that travel is preculded doesn't happen very often, but this has been an exceptionally wet spring - - one of the two or three wettest springs in history according to local newscasts.

Day one is in the books. We are at Enchanted Trails in Albuquerque, NM after putting in 450 miles. It's a little more then I like to do in one day, but the rest of our days will be shorter.

We did stop In Winslow at our favorite restaurant/hotel for lunch.

Pictures to follow...

Oh, that is a long drive from Phnx to Abq! Glad to hear that the next segments will be shorter!

A vote from us for the Turquoise Room, too!

Once you view the room, then run out and buy this book:

The signature soup is our favorite. The hotel is just a wonderful place to visit. They opened a new section on the 2nd floor with more of the owners wife's wonderful paintings.

A little late at joining this conversation but wanted to add two things. White Castles can't be beat! Sure wish we had some in Iowa. And...speaking of Iowa...anyone traveling through from the west on their way to DuQuoin should stay informed of the flooding condition. Only one route open on I-80 from Omaha to Council Bluffs. I-29 is also closed north of Sioux City and south of Nebraska City.

Made it to Liberal Kansas yesterday through NM, TX and OK. We had a bunch of wind last night which knocked out the parks power and wifi. Power is back, but wifi is down.

By golly, those pics look just like ... Kansas! Just steer clear of Dorothy's place. Word is that they have tornados that sweep you clear to someplace called Oz.

Last night with all the wind we had I wished that I had never seen the movie "Twister".

It has been a couple of days since we saw a Starbucks, maybe Wichita...
