NOVA goes to New York!

New York. . . NOVA . . . New York!

This is a Buddy Rally of the NOVA WBCCI unit. Everyone is welcome to attend!

You’re going to want to jump on this – a New Jersey/New York trip with a lot of flexibility for everyone to fine-tune the details to their own needs! Organizer Dan Bihary has provided a bit of visual inspiration to help you get in the mood!

The idea is to meet up at Jersey Shore Haven (an Airstream Land Yacht Harbor! Liberty Harbor RV Park) by Saturday, August 24th. Come a few days early and enjoy this all-Airstream park – or come just in time to jump in with the group! Saturday will be a day to explore the shore, indulge in a seafood dinner, and prepare to caravan into New York City on Sunday.

Our destination in NYC is Liberty Harbor RV Park Liberty Harbor RV Park, where we will be headquartering for our 3 night stay right in the shadow of Ellis Island and The Statue of Liberty! There are plenty of options to venture out for the evening right from Liberty Harbor RV Park on Sunday afternoon and evening: A tour bus leaves from the front porch of the RV Park into Manhattan, the NY Waterway Ferry leaves from Liberty Harbor to Pier 11 at the foot of Wall Street, and it is an easy 5-bock walk to Grove St PATH subway station which goes right to the World Trade Center Site!

Monday an organized “see it all” trip has been planned with a private bus, excursion guide, and 8-hours of escorted sight-seeing at the cost of $119 per person. Tuesday will be a free day for those brave travelers that want to venture into the city on their own via bus, ferry, or subway, ending Tuesday night with dinner out!

On Wednesday some of the group will head for a two-night stay at Floyd Bennett Field in Gateway National Recreation Area, America's first urban National Park http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/flbe.htm where there is limited RV parking with advance reservations. Others from the group will depart on Wednesday for a few relaxing days at Penn Wood Airstream Park in Clarion, PA Penn Wood Airstream Park - Photos before heading for home.

That is a loose idea of the over-all plan, but please keep in mind that you can bend and flex the schedule in whatever way you need to join in. Each unit will be in charge of their own reservations, and there will not be a plan to caravan unless you buddy-up and make plans on your own. At this time there are 4 Airstream units making plans. If you are interested in joining this jaunt, contact trip planner Dan Bihary at dbihary@hotmail.com.

Nyc

Looking forward to this. It will be a once in a lifetime trip for us. We are hoping to hear recommendations from some of our Airstream friends in the NY area. What should we be doing while we are there? The guided tour will take up one day for sure. Any other tips for us?

Great trip! Wish we could go with you, but will be leading the SW Adventure. We were able to attend the last Statue of Liberty Rally with two grandchildren and they still talk about and the rest want to go!

I am really pleased to see this trip publicized on the forums and hope that we get information on trips planned by other Units.

Dan,

Wouldn't hurt to post on the WBCCI Facebook page also.

Liberty Harbour is on our list of places to visit - once the kids are older and more willing to accompany us to our favourite NYC haunts.

Right now I suspect they'd be bored out of their heads.

We leave tomorrow from Ohio for this trip. I again invite anyone in the area to stop in and say hi! We would love to meet up with some fellow Airstreamers.

Today is the first day back to work after this wonderful trip! I'll have pic's to share, but just wanted to provide a brief comment about where we stayed:

New Jersey Shore Haven Airstream park - Amazing hidden gem! The brand new pool is better than some resorts I've stayed in. It's close to Cape May and Wildwood. I'll be back for a longer stay.

Liberty Harbor RV Park - Simply put, it is what it is. From the campground you have a view of million dollar yachts, the NYC skyline and World Trade Center, and the backside of the Statue of Liberty.

It is a gated parking lot with water and power 5 blocks from the subway. Clean and good shower houses. I would not hesitate staying again. About $80 per night.

Floyd Bennant Field, Gateway National Recreation Area, Brooklyn. - This was the highlight of my trip. Absolutely loved the area. $25 per night. Boondocking. Basically, you are camping directly on Jamaica Bay. It can be a little noisey during the day with JFK air traffic, but they re-route at night.

There are some odd activities going on. On site is the sanitation training center (learn to drive a garbage truck!) and police training area including driving and helicopter search and rescue.

None of these activities were excessively noisy or distracting. Just FYI, Floyd Bennent Field is about the size of lower Manhattan, so space isn't an issue!

A big issue is that trailers are not permitted on the Parkway, so you get to experience navigating the roads of Brooklyn! It really wasn't bad as it sounds if you do your planning and throw away your GPS.

A full trip report will be done in the future.

Here are a couple of true shots of what Liberty Harbor looks like. Note the new World Trade Center in the extreme right. The Statue of Liberty is visible, but limited. You basically are looking over Liberty State Park and Ellis Island.
