New Years Rally Picacho Peak SP 12-31-08 to 1-4-09
Would there be any interest in a rally over New Years Eve? The dates would be 12-31-08 through 1-4-09 allowing those who wish to ring in the new year mid week, and anyone who wants to stay over the weekend or arrive for the weekend.
Here is a little information on the Site that is available. Jackrabbit Group Area:
Group Area is divided into two reservable sections, EAST & WEST
Large group fire-ring with group grill
Large group ramada
Electrification to the ramadas & water source (both coming soon)
Scattered campsites with picnic tables & fire-rings
Portable toilets
Access to campground's restroom/shower buildings
Set within all natural Sonoran Desert environment
Minimum of 7 units (vehicles) required for camping, maximum 14 units per section
15 units minimum for exclusive use of the entire area
If we have 15 units or more, we can reserve either the Jackrabbit area entirely or the Quail area which is closer to the showers and dump station.
Attached is the link to the Picacho Peak SP website. Arizona State Parks: Picacho Peak: Home
The daily fee is $12.00 for each unit per day.
I will reserve the site once we figure out how many interested parties we have.
We're in...the Quail area is good...if you bring firewood, make sure you let the folks at the entry know it came from outside...I upset them with roadside collections(including the railroad tie sized chunk), as they thought I had scavenged in the park...GREAT PARK!!!...TOUGH climb...don't go back down the back way, unless you have awhile and are willing to drop down suddenly and steeply...clean facilities, hot water at the bath, and a fire ring that would(and, actually, HAS) held a 'controlled burn' the size of...well...a 4CU bonfire...

Now this sounds like my kinda fun. Sure had a good time last year so we'll put it on the calendar. A visit to the Arizona Nut House is in order as its just up the road. Really, it is.
Count us in assuming we are not stuck in a snow drift then!
You might want to push the starting date up a day or two. Or at least make provisions for early birds.

Snow in New Mexico? Gosh have I lived a sheltered life! I thought you lived in the land of sun and warmth almost the entire year and figured snow drifts were the things we Canadians and those in the northern states only experienced.
Shows to go you that I need to get out of the house more often. Next thing you know Goin will be on here saying he might make it but for the risk of snow and then we'll know this global warming thing means global freezing. Our long range forecast is for a lot of rain here in the lower mainland and snow snow snow in the mountains around us. Oh well.....

Just let me know what day you would like to arrive and I will include those days in the reservation. Julianne wants to arrive a couple of days early as well.
We will have a potluck at least one night, Probably more since many will be there for several days.
We were thinking that one afternoon we could play our version of Pictionary. It is always a big hit at our parties. We have a large easel type white board and usually have members of each team put words on slips of paper for the other teams to draw, it can get quite interesting to say the least and works great for large groups.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please let us know.
We are looking forward to hosting our first rally.
We made plans/reservations months ago (literally) to go camping in San Diego County and Anza Borrego State Park over Christmas and New Year's, so alas, we are going to miss this one.
We had planned, however, to stay at Picacho Peak on our way home, Sat, 3 Jan and maybe through a couple of days the next week, depending on work responsibilities. So we might be able to join the group for at least one night before y'all take off. Well see how it works out. Picacho Peak's a great park. It has just re-opened after being closed for the summer (just as well...it's friggin' HOT there in the summer)...they were closed to begin building a new visitor's center...the center will not be finished until Feb 09, but at least the Park's open again.

TB,
Where are you staying? We have a reservation at Palm Canyon from Jan 1 through Jan 4.
