Mr DG,
We may ask for references, and that just means we are WAY ahead on the adult beverages...adopt a Peep or flamingo, and I'll pay yer yearly unit dues, long as the ink don't dry and the bank stays closed.
Having trouble getting out of here...mornings are chilly at around 10*F, but the days are t-shirt weather into the 50's, long as yer in the sun and no appreciable wind...will try to leave for Picacho in a week or less, but will still take 6-7 weeks to get there...playing pinball Airstream in the 4 corners area.

Mr TB,
Well, the crow don't taste any worse the second time around(pass the tabasco)...just got off the phone with the Picacho ranger station...ahem, day-use passes are only that, and camping fees exempt you from day-use fees...thanks for nipping that one early...keep an eye on me...

Although the web site for Picacho says charcoal or duraflame ONLY, wood fires are allowed(Catalina is the only park with that restriction), and if'n you want to, you can buy bundles at the station for $5-5.50. Gathering wood in the park is strictly forbidden, and there are no public areas nearby which allow wood harvesting.

Generators are allowed, except for 'quiet time" which is 10p-8a.

Even here in BC and WA with so much wood around you as you camp in the forest there are no wood gathering restrictions that are aggressively enforced. Same price for wood to burn, they just don't have to travel so far to get it.

Given I had three 100+ year old Maple trees blown down in my back yard on remembrance day firewood will not be an issue for me for the next few years. Darn you hate to lose good old trees though.

Mike...Thanks for checking on the annual pass to make sure of the policy...I wish they had an annual camping pass! We were at Picacho for a long weekend over Veteran's Day and everyone was having ground fires (in the fire rings)...we've never seen fires restricted to charcoal or duraflame there... There isn't really much in the way of trees there (much less downed wood)...sparse low bushes and saguaro cacti mostly...maybe a few palo verde trees here and there... I haven't updated our travel log website for that trip yet, but when I do I'll post a note here so folks and look at it and get a sense of what Picacho looks like. Sorry we are going to miss this gathering...we had already made plans to be at Buckskin Mt. State Park and Cattail Cove State Park on the lower Colorado River from right after Christmas through New Year's...

You were right the first time...it's MrTB...sorry for the ambiguity.

We are thinking about Dead Horse...we might just see you there. We have to test our drycamping capabilities before that, though. (We have factory solar in the Bambi but have not really ever depended on it...we don't have a generator... yet). But I suppose if we were to need juicin', someone will be able to generator us up, yes?

Bring firewood!

We are going to have a great fire pit in the Quail Loop. I'll be bringing as much as I can carry but I bet we'll want more (based on Dead Horse experience).

This is going to be fun! Lots of old friends to visit with and some new ones to meet. We can't wait. Let's see what we need to bring, in order of importance.
  • M-Ball
  • Firewood
  • Honda EU1000 Generator (Just ask if you need to borrow it)
  • Food
  • Bikes
  • Midnight Surprises!

No telescope? Isn't this the place with the middle of the night star show? Or do I have the wrong party - ummm, I mean camp out?

A telescope would be great. Gary brought one to Dead Horse last year and everyone got some great looks at our neighbors (planets). He is going to be at DH2, but I have not heard if he will be at Picacho.

We're so excited that we left yesterday...got out of the mountains before the snow hit...it was 0(that's zero) degrees F outside our kitchen window yesterday morning...drove over the passes and stopped at Mesa Verde...woke up to 4'' of snow accumulated and growing...so, we'll just hunker down for another nite, or try to make it to the casino parking lot...

Mr 57,
Last year, there was, indeed, a fine telescope. However, there was also a simulated meteor shower(a cosmic parade, if you will) involving a flurry of glow sticks and I think it culminated in a chair flare...things were a little fuzzy...
