No telescope? Isn't this the place with the middle of the night star show? Or do I have the wrong party - ummm, I mean camp out?

A telescope would be great. Gary brought one to Dead Horse last year and everyone got some great looks at our neighbors (planets). He is going to be at DH2, but I have not heard if he will be at Picacho.

We're so excited that we left yesterday...got out of the mountains before the snow hit...it was 0(that's zero) degrees F outside our kitchen window yesterday morning...drove over the passes and stopped at Mesa Verde...woke up to 4'' of snow accumulated and growing...so, we'll just hunker down for another nite, or try to make it to the casino parking lot...

Mr 57,
Last year, there was, indeed, a fine telescope. However, there was also a simulated meteor shower(a cosmic parade, if you will) involving a flurry of glow sticks and I think it culminated in a chair flare...things were a little fuzzy...

All my degrees are associate or belt...or attention span...

I think ASG lives in Mancos, but we came thru there at dark, yesterday...we're gonna make a run for the casino prking lot, or maybe just go on to Gallup...decisions, decisions...

Gosh Michael

The last time anyone called me Mister it was followed by "step away from the car"

What's with this snow and zero F stuff? It's not even winter yet according to the calendar. Brrrrrr. We woke up to heavy frost and cool but it's warm now and sunny as it should be.

Obviously you are experienced at traveling/towing in snow but still, travel safe.

We could drag our old 4 in refractor along. Not as fancy as some of the new-fangled scopes but it works and doesn't need power.

Picacho Peak Trip

Hey All... We have finally had a chance to update our travel log on line (link below) to include our recent trip to Picacho Peak over Veteran's Day...

We thought the information and visuals in our travel log might be useful for those who have not been to Picacho but who are going to or thinking of going to the 4CU's New Year's Rally 29 Dec 07 - 1 Jan 08. Unfortunately, we had already made plans to ring in the New Year in our Bambi at another AZ state park on the lower Colorado River...

You will have a great time at Picacho and we will be thinkng of you all whooping it up around the campfire while we watch the lights reflecting off the Colorado River.

Below is a teaser pic for you! Check out our link below. There are also a few pictures on our travel log thread on the forums: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...tml#post489044, post #30...

Enjoy and we'll see you further down the road...

Barring natural disaster etc. Our plans are set. On the 26th we'll head to Death Valley and then it's over to Picachu.

When does soiree kick off?

Goin',
Good question

Can we show up early and access the group area, as long as we pay whatever the rate is...? If so, how early CAN we come in...? We're laughin' in Laughlin, but will eventually head over to Quartzite on our way to Picacho, possibly via Williams. The Grand Canyon Railway & RV Park has a deal that allows you 2 nites/3 days stay and the Grand Canyon train trip for about $70...the train trip by itself is $65...maybe we'll wait if any of the Dead Horse 2 group wants to do a group trip before or after the rally there...?
Have a little wood, but will seek more after we get situated at Picacho...
good excuse for a day trip...

Ken & I will be arriving on Friday Dec 29 (one day early). The ranger told Ken we could set up in the Quail Group area a day early since no one had it reserved that day. As far as many more showing up early and setting up there - it's unknown at this point if he would charge us more or what, but Ken says he will check on it and find out since several folks have said they want to come early . . . . . .

The way they do it at Dead Horse is that you just pay the daily rate ($12) for the area for extra days. As long as no one has the area rented out, it should not be a problem. Jan & I may be there on Friday as well.

I was thinking of showing up on Thursday. Hope it's not a problem. I need to use up the last three remaining days of vacation or I lose them and I can't think of a better way to put them to use than in the Airstream and I'm kind of tired of the view out the windows while its parked in my driveway.

Showing up early

Here's the deal... We have the Quail Loop reserved from 3:00 PM (check out time is 2:00 PM) onward starting the afternoon of Friday the 28th. That's when we will be pulling in. So as Richard said you just pay the ranger at the gate for any extra nights. I think it is $12.50 a night. If you want to show up even earlier you can stay in the regular campground loops (A, B or C. We like C). As cool as it has gotten here I advise filling up the propane tanks and bring an arm load of firewood if you can.
Cheers,
Ken (Mrs. Silverback is the serious one...)
