very valid point about boondocking and animals. i've decided to leave mine at home for this trip (i am aware however that some people don't have that option).

ken j, i know this is your rally, i just have a lot of time on my hands (way to much)... i know you would have called; it's a personality thing... i'm positive that's why the stock market is down 300 points. i called.
please note: i always kamp for free, drink for free and eat for free. please add Belgium Beer (the big ones, in the 9% - 13.5% range) to your shopping lists...
I just came to the realization that I shouldn't leave everything unscheduled - so I called Suzanne at the KOA in Grants and reserved Thursday night.
We'd like to see Chaco Culture while we're in the neighborhood - so likely would do that before Thurs. We understand that we should not try to take the rig over some of those roads. Do any of you guys have a cg recommendation, or do you think the best thing is to come earlier to Grants and then backtrack to Chaco?

You are correct about not hauling your AS into Chaco even though there is a small campground there. The route from the north has the shortest unpaved section but it is still about 16 miles. I have never driven the route from the south but have heard that it has an even longer unpaved section.

You could call Chaco and ask when was the last time that the roads were bladed. The longer the time, the worse the washboarding.
Check the weather. Some of the unpaved sections have a high clay content and rain can make them very slippery.

Kev - no problem talking to Susan - she is the one in charge and I actually already knew the answer, but I'm glad you called and got double confirmation. I most definitely look at this as "our" rally, all I did was kinda got the bug in everyones ear and collected some money - so I have no problem with anyone jumping in at any time - I'm a team player kinda guy.... -

it's way to early for me to tell, however you could make the reservation, and then cancel if it does'nt work out... or if i served my now famous "herbed mashed potatoes", for lunch, better reserve three tables for dinner and dessert... bring your sun glasses, red eyes scare small children.
please don't forget i like belgium beer, and i'll be doing a brisket recipe i stole from a fellow 'streamer, linda otter at the pot luck... richard prefers we don't talk pot luck, because it takes the luck out of the pot, but along w/ jan, we just ignore him, unless he has a bottle of ta-kill-ya in his hands... then were all eyes 'n ears...
i'm thinking i will have the corn fedex'd in; both kinds, yellow and white... fresh is best... or tater tots, there all the rage right now in the fine restaurants on the left coast (i'm not kidding, a $8 horse duver, served w/ ketchup on the side).
does anyone know if we have a dive cowboy bar within striking distance from the fiesta grounds??? if not, i'll call susan again and find out... she was right on top of the hound questions.
...But, don't drag your Airstream in there. Though it is an enchanting place to camp (Afterall, this is the land of Enchantment), the wear and tear could be heart breaking.Though funds have been appropriated from time to time to pave the road, the road remains unimproved for one reason, to keep motor homes and travel trailers out. This is an open "secret." If I had a throw away hunting trailer, or a pick-up camper, I'd take it in. Motor homes do okay if you take it slow. But pulling an Airstream you love will seem like the longest 16 miles you have ever traveled. It's not just the washboard road that takes its toll, but the rocks thrown by passing cars and trucks on the narrow road. So, stay in Bloomfield, and make day trips to Chaco. If you want to be there for the celestial night sky, pack a tent and spend the night in the campground.
By the way, there are times within 24 hours of the road being graded that it can be very nice. Don't hate me if you catch it at its best.

My lab mix gets really upset when it thunders and I know the balloon burners make a lot of noise when firing. Anyone have a feel for how pets react to the noise?

please hang w/ us. i'm a charter asscociate member of the Four Corners Unit. i lead one of the most succesful tours in history at the deadhorse rally, and that's frankly why i'm so highly paid at these events.
i'm going to throw in, at no extra expense (other than ammo; please .44 mags or .44 specials; about 100 rounds per person, i recomend cowboy loads for begginers; and for pete's sake, buy your ammo in NM, you will save big buxs. if you have a .44 cal pistol bring it, or i can provide several), a dive cowboy tour, stops at two different feed stores, and to top things off, an evening of driving around the ghost towns shooting out the windows of old buildings (this was a smashing hit in Deadhorse this year) and for the true pioneers, we will meet early one morning to rob ancient indian burial mounds (please provide your own gloves, shovel, 5 gallon bucket, and sifting screen; please note we split anything of value 50 / 50). please pack a bagged lunch and bring your own beverages, further details to follow (time to meet, what to do if we're caught, who to call just in case, why we actually belong in the DNA pool, where to hide the stuff while traveling intra state).
i've had six enquiries re: a very special brothel / casino tour for the woman in the group (totally was over the top last year...) please no mail... E or otherwise...
if there's anything else i can do to lower anyone's standards, PLEASE let me know, i enjoy accomodating my friends.
