2016 Denco Maintenance Rally

Sadly after having a wonderful time at our first rally of the year with 73 rigs showing up, sometime after our "sanctioned unit open house" and this morning upon leaving, our 1962 Overlander which is one of the Around the World" trailers was badly keyed on curb side waste high for about five feet. The scratches are very deep and many. It would require replacing the entire side panel being a solid sheet.

OMG that's horrible ! I'm studying the picture - maybe some kid was messing around - I'm hoping - maybe - they are surface and they would polish out - can't tell but they look like they are marginally deep - fingers crossed it would polish out - so sorry to hear this

No Ken, these scratches are quite deep. If you drag your fingernail across them, they will stop and get hung up on each scratch. As Chris said a few people are "mean' and these scratches are part of the trailer.

It saddens to see this. What a shame. There is no excuse or reason for this kind of behavior.

Thanks for your offer to help Kip. Since our ATW Overlander isn't polished, and our "appraiser" recommended not polishing its exterior for "originality", and if we still had "vintage 1962 aluminum" leftovers from our restoration, replacement with bucked factory still rivets would be the only option. To do so, as you know, we would have to removed the interior cabinetry, inner skin, all the foam block insulation to gain access to inside of outer skin. So, unfortunately, the vandalism scratches are now part of the Yeager, Around the World trailer.

scratch

I missed this thread yesterday, and just now saw it. That is a bummer. when I first saw it this morning it looked suspiciously like the scratches I have on my motorcycle trailer ( DW calls it furniture hauler; grrrrrrr)

I have a 'Crazy Cardinal' that sees himself in the aluminum and attacks it.
He's a freak ! That bird has done this for the last two years. I am always chasing him off. Its a good thing I store the AS at a indoor storage facility, cause this bird has destroyed the motorcycle trailer.

I thought your pic was 'bird attack' at first (not that its any better if it was) but it looks more than just a straight line scratch, Coloradus. I hate that for you. Can't have nothing these days.

anyhoo, hate that someone did that to your AS. I hope you can fix it,

Jim very sorry to hear this. Maybe time for our Denco club to go elsewhere. The KOA is nice but ... Wonder if any other members had problems.

It was a treat to tour ATW Saturday. Chris's restoration work is outstanding. It's a priceless piece of Airstream history. Concerning the perp I can't comment here.

Coloradobus, that is absolutely horrific.

I also initially also thought those scratches looked childlike as they seem do random and crooked.

How were you all parked, could someone have witnessed this. You had to be out of the trailer at the time along with your neighboring trailers. Did anyone show any animosity towards you or your trailer.

Another constant reminder that there seem to be no boundaries on stupid and malicious.

So very sorry for you.

I heard there was an altercation with a person with a very noisy Black Poodle making a LOT of noise during the daytime. Could the owner have taken a little revenge on the AS people? Hard to prove. Very sad person that would do that. Justice would be nice. A cloud over an otherwise nice weekend. I gained 4 pounds , need to correct that. Best to ya.

2016 Denco Rally

I believe I saw a sign at the office building that noted the area was under camera surveillance. Not sure if it implied the office building itself or the park. Might be worth a call to the KOA to inquire.

Condolences on your damage. Cannot even imagine what kind of idiot would do that to someone else's property.

Thankyou to all who have offered advice and sincere feelings of pain for us. It is very sad this had to happen to anyone. We were parked in a row with other airstreams to our drivers side, but door side by eyesite was blocked by a large 5th wheel. At night it was very dark. We were away from the trailer for dinner in the main building but it was daylight. After dinner and back to the trailer for a brief time to collect the dogs for their walk, we were gone then for several hours into the evening darkness visiting friends on the other side of the KOA.
We have resigned to the fact now the scratches are part of the Yeager trailer's history. Its skin wasn't by any means perfect and was and will remain unpolished along with other "dings and doinks" for being over 50 years old.
Hard to say who and when, but it happened as a part of life I guess.
We know of friends who were new to airstream a few year ago, while traivelling in their brand new trailer and they, too, were keyed.
its sad for sure

Mother's Day we parked our '75 AS in a parking lot of a furniture store behind a restaurant in Lexington, Ky. It was in an area with moderate traffic. When we returned after eating lunch, we returned to find someone had literally ripped one of the stainless steel gravel guards off the trailer. They pulled the screws out causing some damage to the trailer skin.I wonder if anyone offers a surveillance system for trailers.

Your not alone

When I took my recently finished 55 Safari to the Texas Vintage rally las year I got a similar gouging. I was parked away from the maddening crowd but found a large scratch down the entire side.

Gary,
From our understanding so far, another trailer was scratched. . Also, a hubcap on a tow vehicle came up missing as well. There is a population at this campground one could deem semi or permanent residents. Just saying
