Early morning cloud cover for a bit and chillier than I remember of past years. This year, the balloons headed south, over the Airstreams rather than north, over the towers right off the bat. Exciting!

No sign of Darth or the Storm Troopers at this morning's event. I spotted maybe a dozen shaped balloons....

They mentioned on the channel 4 news that Darth should be here Thursday for the special shapes mass ascension.

Overheard an announcer this morning on the field say it was the balloon promoter's error that caused the hold up in getting the shaped balloons out of China and not the Chinese....

The Balloon Fiesta is not all balloons! Also happening is the Echo Chain Saw Carving Championship with the winner to be announced this evening (Sunday). An auction of the finished pieces, benefitting the New Mexico chapter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, will also take place this evening.

The wood carving is spectacular! It all starts as a big piece of redwood and they turn them into works of art. It is well worth the walk to the other end of the field. For a few bucks you get a chance to win a nice carving and it is for a great cause as well.

The wood carving championship goes to Jason Emmons of Washington with his entry, "Spirit of the Southwest". This carving had 11 different southwest scenes and included an eagle, bear, coyote, pueblo, etc. But the real winner was the man who purchased the piece in the auction for ONLY $3,250.

Tonight will be our last at the fiesta and it has been a lot of fun.

This morning the balloons flew right over our trailers as they attempted to hit targets on the ground in a game of Texas Hold'em.

Several of us were eye witnesses to a horrifying accident when a balloon hit a tent on the edge of the field and the passenger was thrown to the ground. The pilot then did an emergency decent by letting the air out of the balloon and hit the ground very hard. Both people were taken to the local hospital and are expected to recover.
