Surprisingly enough, after two months of limbo I made another request earlier this week and we're a GO!
All I'm waiting for is pricing and then a contract. There are a whole bunch of surprises surrounding this one and some of those revolve around pricing so I'm in a hold pattern not wanting to publicize too much.
Once they've got the contract ready I have to go back and measure all three parking lots and the road to see what we can accommodate.
We will have access to the fort/museum for some period of time that weekend and we'll most likely have a catered reception of some sort in the fort's pentagon courtyard.
The dates have been set and it moved up a week -- it's June 8-10.
The entire week long celebration will either end here or start here. We'll be staying mid-week on Long Island in campgrounds with full hook-ups but for the other weekend we're looking at another weekend of dry camping at a vineyard. Wine tasting is definitely a go but we're hoping to hook up with a vineyard that is running some other type of entertainment that weekend. There's a lot of jazz out east, antique car shows, etc., so we're exploring those kind of things right now.

Sorry, I forgot that I had posted the latest Fort Schuyler photo when we got approved the other day. I was in a rush and never posted the news or the new pic...
Please forgive my ignorance, but exactly how old does an Airstream have to be, dated from this year, to be considered vintage? Would a 1987 Classic Motorhome qualify? Would such a beastie be eligible to attend?

This isn't strictly a Vintage Rally. It's a Metro 50th celebration and we're hoping to entice some Vintage AS's into attending. We can entertain ourselves just fine but there's this big negative aura about how difficult it is to get onto Long Island (it's absolutely FALSE by the way), so we figured if we could find a great scenic site, somewhere near NYC but OFF LI that we could get some VAC folks (the closer to 50's the better) to come on down, over, and up to join us.
I think we scored a 10 on the site -- now we just have to see how many rigs we can get into our assigned spaces. Once Metro members have weighed in, we're going open it up to VAC for a short period of time and then whatever is left is wide open.
I think I'm going to have to go look at rules and regulations, consult the local Unit scholars and figure out exactly how this is supposed to be handled without getting ME into trouble...
Who knows maybe we'll see phenominal growth in the Metro unit over the next couple of months...
The weekend of the 8th is still free on our schedule and you guys are going to be irresistably close. Unfortunately, school is still in session for at least another week, thereby precluding us from joining you in your trek across the Island. Could you somehow let us all know when/if you are opening up your rally to non-Metro, non-VAC members? Thank you.
That is my intent. I need a signed contract and three measured lots and a measured road to figure out what we can handle. TTBOMK Metro has 38 member families. Not all still trailer but I expect a pretty good turn out.
The VAC? Well we'll have to see who will come east of the Hudson (some of these guys are real wussies you know ) and who might venture down from NE or up from the DC area.
Early on there was mention of an overflow parking lot. If you look at this photo:
On the north side just to the left of the bridge are reddish looking (I believe) tennis courts. This is an old satellite photo and those courts are gone. A building occupies the section closest to the bridge and a parking lot runs from the left half of those courts all the way over to the 'L' (turned 90 degrees clockwise) shaped building to its left.
I'll have to ask about that one again but if it's still available to us I'll lock it up. It will be just a short walk from there to the Fort *IF* we need to use it. Look at the panoramic shot in that same folder for a full view -- make sure you pick the bigger size. Also in that overhead shot I just referred to 'the money shot' -- NYC is on the opposite side of the peninsula. We'll find a reason to go ever there too. For those not from the area Manhattan at night should be pretty awesome especially looking at it and the Whitestone Bridge in the same frame.

Let me know if i can be of any assistance with this event. I'm in the Watchung Unit and live pretty close. It looks to be a great Rally and I don't want to miss it.
Having lived on City Island and sailed past the fort many times, it will be extra special for us to Rally there.
more...the location is home to the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College campus. Not to be confused with the Merchant Marine Academy which is across the water at Kings Point.
