direct route?

I can speak to the road quality of I-44 as we visit Mo from NC several times a year. I-44 is VERY rough with a continuous convoy of 18 wheelers going 75 to 80 mph.
As to it being the "most direct route", well, that depends upon where you are coming from. If you are traveling up I-24 from Nashville, you might think the best and most direct way is on to St. Louis and then Springfield via I-44. But alas! From I-24 the BEST and most DIRECT route to Springfield is via Hwy 60 which is accessed at Paduka, KY. While some of this Hwy is two lane, it is relatively easy traveling and it will save you approx. 100 miles vs. St. Louis and I-44.

I agree - - living less than 60 miles from either Paducah, KY or Sikeston, MO - - US-60 is my choice when going West. I generally make several trips each year between Southern Illinois and Kansas with US-60 being my route of choice - - it is also easily accessible via I-57/I-55 at Sikeston, MO. Not only is there a mileage savings, there is far less stress from this route - - and a plus is the scenery is fantastic - - fuel even seems to be readily available when needed.

What is it with the Great Danes poking their heads out the door? Ours would open the slider himself so he could stick his head out to look around.
Of course, that was after we put a latch on the door so he couldn't open the whole door himself.
Oh yeah, and then we had to add bars to the door so he wouldn't just push the screen out.
Hmmm....

Thanks to everyone for the travel directions.
I will be coming up I24 thru Paduka, Ky. I am going to pull out my maps tomorrow and have a look at that Rt. 60.
I want a leisurely route, good road, good scenic beauty and Rt. 60 sounds like it meets all of the above.
I44 sounds just like I70. I70 is terrible, especially at night. The trucks must be running 80-90mph.

Glad to know that pooches of all sizes are welcome. We have a great dane/rottweiler mix and a yellow lab/golden retriever mix. Both are big girls. The dane/rott mix thinks she is a toy breed though as she was trained with toy breeds. Pretty funny to watch a tall, 140 pound dog try to "get small" so she can look the toys in the eyes. She hasn't found the screen door hole yet but I imagine she will the first time she is on the inside and we are on the outside.
