VIRGINIA - May We Rally?
Hello all, Virginia Highland Haven opens on May 1
Would anyone be interested in a very informal meet up at VHH in May? I'm considering going for 4 days - any Thursday thru Sunday. My preference would be May 8-11 or May 15-18. Of course I know that many have work commitments or children in school, so we could keep it very unstructured - those who could only arrive on Friday or Saturday would be more than welcome.
I've checked with the Haven and we can all make individual reservations - we'll only need approval if we need to use the campfire/cooking hearth and the screen room for a potluck. That's a mere formality, especially if we invite anyone who is already on site to join in. In May there are usually only 7 to 10 campsites in use.
Agenda - what agenda?
Floyd has a lot of weekend country music type events - it's touristy but rural and the hardware store has ALL the Lodge cast iron you'd ever want. (If you're like me though the first place to shop for cast iron is charity thrift stores.)
One thing I'd really enjoy would be to have Saturday or Sunday Brunch at Chateau Morrisette - it's about 9 miles South of Floyd (a 40 minute scenic drive down to Floyd, then down the Blue Ridge Parkway. Exit the parkway between Mile Marker 171 & 172) but it's a great brunch, with wine optional, and there are tours of the winery and company store. We could caravan in one or two tow vehicles. I can carry 4 passengers.
Chateau Morrisette: Visit: Directions
There are hiking trails but just hanging around and enjoying the clean clear mountain air is great too. I'm hoping to get Terry (Overlander63) from OODM to come work schedules allow. He's a great advisor on general maintenance, etc.
Ian Poulin from Richmond just got his first Airstream - a 28' Serenity & I'm also looking forward to meeting him in person after PM'ing back and forth as he found and bought his new to him unit. I'm hoping to meet a lot of other Virginia and North Carolina Airstreamers there too.
I'll be practicing my biscuit recipe - but make no promises. If the seagulls die, it'll be Poppin Fresh instead. I might even get adventurous and try a brunswick stew. Again the seagulls will be crash test dummies - and a bit cannibalistic when you consider that chickens are also birds.
So - please post and Let's RALLY
Paula

We'd enjoy a visit to HH. Either weekend works for us, other than we may not get there until Friday the 16th. Jack

My wife and I were already planning to be at HH from 5/4 through 5/12. We'll be arriving there from the Region 3 rally in Asheville which ends on 5/4. We've been spending the winter at Land Yacht Harbor, Melbourne, FL and are meandering back to our Maine home by about Memorial Day. Would enjoy meeting some VA-6ers!

Hi Paula,
We could make the earlier dates on our loop home from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park - maiden voyage of the EB (just waiting for the salty roads to wash off a bit up here in the Green Mountains before starting the journey). We'll have lots of newbie questions.

Virginia - May we Rally?
I'd love to join you - I am a new owner (1998 Safari) as of a week ago. It's set up for extended living at Fort Pickett and I don't have a tow vehicle yet and may not by May... so if I am able to join you I'd be without my AS. I could stay nearby. I'd love to meet some Virginians... and also the Mainer that chimed in - that is where I am originally from! I am a solo traveler, so I would enjoy also chatting with you Paula, as I get the impression you are a veteran solo adventurer from your other posts. If the group decides on May 8-11, I have a family reunion. But otherwise it would be fun to join you for a day or two.

Rats. Would love to join, but my AS is still up on blocks while I'm puttin in all new black and gray tanks. Don't think I'll get it all done by then.

I know VHH will not allow a non-Airstream on the property, but perhaps you could come up for a day or two and stay at a hotel in Floyd or Roanoke. Off season rates should apply.
Looks like all but one or two people would prefer the first weekend - May 8, 9, 10, 11. OTOH, this could be "The Rally to Good to End." Ian mentioned he might want to stay a whole week. I could probably twist my business partner's arm and stay until the 17th or 18th.
At this time of year, the campground should be nearly empty.

So... 8th-11th then? Give me the trigger so I can call and reserve before all the spaces fill up. :-P

Ian, Yep, I'm going to call it for the earlier week. I very much doubt that the park could be filled by our rally. There are 46 sites and it's likely that only 6 to 10 will be filled by regular members. I'd be shocked if we get more than 10 to 15 trailers. Too many people whose children are still in school.

Hrmmmm... does HH not take reservations until after the season begins? Calling the number on their website and brochure PDF (540-651-9050) return an error message recording saying the number is inactive.

Definite Maybe
When open the campground is manned by friendly volunteer hosts who also are park stockholders. The phone line will not be answered until the campground opens May 1. You can send the park an email with your request for reservations prior to May 1. Email address is: vhhas@swva.net My understanding is someone checks emails every few days prior to opening.
Sunnygirl and I have a conflict on Saturday but hope we can attend some of the rally. Our Airstream will be there, even if we aren't!

We have May 8-11 on the calendar. Based on what I read here, I guess we can't reserve until May 1? Jack

Try sending the park an email now with your reservation. If no response call May 1.
