Hi Don,

I'm ususally a big fan of Google maps:

Google Maps

but they don't have a "push pin" interface

Microsoft's maps do:

Live Local Search

You can right click and add push pins and draw paths, etc.

I think Google Earth can add push pins also.

Have fun!

Brad

The Vap and first Leg

We had our first talk with the VAP, Tim, Rob, and Collin. It was a great time with lots of laughs. We have plans to meet up with the NY segment when we get back there. Take a listen and find out why I keep going away. The first leg of the CONVOY is planned. We will be leaving on Friday the 27th of April. We will be heading down I5 first and cutting thru Clear Lake to Cassini Ranch. So far this first leg looks like it will be just us on the road. If we see you going the other way on the road, how about some flashing head lights. Two weekends ago when we were heading down to Sacramento to get parts we saw 4 different Airstreams on the road. Keep on streamen.

First two Legs now planned

Finally the first two legs of the Convoy are planned. We will start out from Yreka and head to Eureka to meetup with sequoiacoast. Then we will head down to the Cassini Ranch Rally. We'll be at the Rally from the 27 to the 29th.
A decision will be made soon on the next leg of the journey. Need to look at the next Rally and figure time and stops. Always open for suggestions.
Thanks Don & Claudia

2air, thanks it's a good feeling to have it actually started. Hopefully we will be headed in your general direction before too long.

The first Members of the CONVOY

sequoiacoast, it's so great that you and your family are joining out trip. We met this family and their amazing Airstream at the South Beach Rally this year.
Mom, Dad and the kids are a great family and a perfect example of the Airstreamers of the next generation. When you take a look at their thread, you will see modifications that fit a growing family heading out and having fun together. I hope all airstreamers get a chance to meet this family sometime down the Airstreamer road. As a retired high school teacher, I can say this is the type of family group that makes America Strong. sequoiacoast, thanks for joining us. All Airstreamers out their should take a look at their thread on their restoration.
http://www.airforums.com/forum...ion-26932.html

The plans for the Eastward part of our trip are taking shape. Because of the people who have PMed us we are heading a little more to the south as we make our trip back to see our Sister Ship. Our basic plan is to travel about 250 miles a day. Have 1 day of rest and sight seeing, and then move on to the next place.

We are now looking for modification to the trip, rallies, courtisy parking along this route. We are planning to keep our travels up to date and a projected route and timeline as we go. So once again, come join us for a few miles or many. If you are heading the other way, flash your lights and wave. We are even willing to pull over and chat for a while. Did someone say, "a cup of coffee".

Here is the map.

hey don, looks like a good route; very pretty country in some of those sections...

are those 'blue highways' ?

given the tv/trailer combo and desire 2 experience real regional flavor,

don't you want to travel 2 lanes whenever possible and skirt the beaten path?

it is harder to do that east of the river...

cheers

2air, Yes we are "Red Roaders". This is the first look at a route in the general area we plan to travel. I will be looking now in more detail. I've never driven in this area before, so as usual, I'm looking for suggestions. We loved the movie CARS. And that is the type of experience we are looking for. Two lanes, Ma & Pa resturants, small towns, old gas stations. Will this path come anywhere near you?

not sure yet where i'll be during this leg of the adventure but i'll pop out of the ground somewhere!

this isn't rv specific or a/s specific but a good resource for byways...

See America's Byways

America's Byways®: National Scenic Byways Online

i'm also interested in the real 'rural' america, there are good links in the resource section here...

Rural Information Center: Promoting Tourism in Rural America

the challenge of course is combining courtsey parking with rural....

most streamers here like most people in america aren't in rural areas...

but it's all good...

cheers
2air'

are we mixing color terms? historically the blue highways were the less traveled...

Your never too old to learn.

2air, thanks the good news is that I'm still teachable. WE have an old Rand McNally map that we have been using for years. One of my favorite words has all ways been: assume. Because I have assumed many things through life, only to have learned that I didn't learn at all. I just got done looking a about 15 different maps. You got my interest up. The bottom line is - there is no standard. Secondary roads can be in red, blue, yellow, and lots of variations. Old Highways fits for the description of where we want to travel. But it would nice to have some catchy fraze. Let's see: Pot Hole Heaven, Snakey way, Off the Beated Path, One Liner, ??? Do you have any ideas. Second thought, We're not Off Roaders. Maybe Inbetweeners. How about stuck in our ways?

Hello, Don and Claudia. Your saga is taking on a shape of its own! If your trip through the midwest varies a little north of where it now shows, we are in the middle of Missouri and would love to host you for an overnight stay. We're not fancy, but we have a pond you can fish, and we do enjoy a home grilled dinner with tasty wine or good beer while we sit out and smile at our Airstream in the back yard I know Gypsy would love a little company. If you take in the Moraine View Rally in Illinois, we'd be on the way, just a byway off I-70. Cheers to your developing story! ~G

Maxandgeorgia, thanks for the response. You are the second person who has requested a move in your direction. It sounds great. I'll work on the map tonight and make the changes. Soon I'll be able to suggest a time-line and let you know when we will be in that area. If you keep watching this discussion and the Blog, it should help you have an idea of when we will get to your area. Also We will be on Vintage Airstream Podcast on a regular basis, so you can find out what's happening there. This is fun the map keeps changing. Just what we had hoped.
Thanks again
Don & Claudia.

Don: I would like to hook up with you somewhere southeast of Bakersfield, and travel as far as Laughlin/Oatman or Kingman.
