Shenandoah Next Week

Page and I are going to make a break for it next week (Mon-Fri) April 13-16 to Shenandoah National Park. The only campgrounds open are Big Meadows and Lewis Mountain.

We'd be glad to see anyone else who can "Spring" free. We will likely leave Monday morning and stop at the Barboursville Winery on the way up.

Pat

As planned, we left Monday morning and stopped first at the Barboursville Winery. However we did not visit the winery, exactly, but instead visited the ruins of the Barboursville house, designed by Thomas Jefferson. The house burned in the 1880's but the ruins have been preserved. Must been quite a place.

We were camped at the Lewis Mountain Camground in Shenandoah NP. As it was the middle of the week and still early spring, very few other campers were around. This is a shot of our site from the comfort station (love that euphemism)

We decided to stay out of the truck for the first couple of days and hike from camp along the Appalachian Trail, which passes just beside the campground. I always trail behind Page, as she loves to stop and admire every (seemingly) flower she finds. I'm afraid if I let her get behind me, I might lose her.

At this spot in the trail, you can see the remains of an old road dropping down from the trail (we are paralleling the Skyline Drive). It is fun, poignant, to search and recognize evidence of the folks who lived here before the park ran them out. The road brings to mind the Frost poem, ...and I, I took the road less traveled by...

The focus of this hike, beyond shaking off the dust of the winter, was to visit the old Pocosin Mission ruins. Judging from the steps, it was quite a building but now consists of low rock walls and a fallen chimney.

All in all, it was a nice getaway and good shakedown cruise. There are no hookups at Shenandoah, so we planned for dry camping. Full tank of fresh water, empty black and gray tanks to start. Also, it was a chance to test out our new Lifelines, which we got from our friend Lewster last year.

They performed perfectly. Although it was pretty cool at night (30's and 40's) we rationed the heat and light sufficiently that we made it through Mon - Friday without needing the generator. Yes, I had it in the truck, just in case. I have a small (45W) solar panel up on the roof, and since it was still winter up there there were no leaves to shade the panels. Not sure we'd have done as well without that help.

Oh - almost forgot: The campground hosts (at Big Meadows until the end of May) are Airstreamers Chuck and Sally Walters. If anyone gets up in their direction, they'll be glad to see you.

Looks like a great trip and a nice bonus to have your getaway spot to yourselves. Thanks for posting pictures. You are really fanning the flames of camping desire over here...
