September in the Pines-Heron Lake State Park, New Mexico

September 16 - 20
September in the Pines Rally at Heron Lake, New Mexico

Come join Anthony and Tamara at Heron Lake
State Park (near Los Ojos) for the 2nd annual September
in the Pines Rally. This is your opprtunity to see what Northern New Mexico has to offer, warm days and cool nights, plus breath taking views and endless activities to experience. The Rally is set for September 16-20,
with the 20th being departure day for most of us.
Anthony and I have selected the Ponderosa Camp area
at Heron Lake (see link to map below). This area is a dry
camp area, but is next to the lake, and has a great
community feel to it. It is next to the boat ramp, making
it easy for those who bring kayaks or canoes. There are
kayaks and boats for rent at the lake as well.
We will need folks to bring along some tables and
some easy-ups for the festivities. We are planning on an
outdoor movie night or two, a Saturday night dance, Chili Cook-off, a taco bar potluck, and
the left over pot-luck dinners. Anthony and I will be doing a breakfast burrito breakfast on
Saturday morning, and will have coffee going every morning.
I have included a few Web links for more information on the area and its many
attractions. The Ponderosa Camp area has room for approximately 25-30 Airstreams and
has toilet facilities. The showers are close by in the Salmon Run camp area. We have a
centrally located area selected for the tables and easy-ups. If anyone has additional ideas
for this rally, let us know. I will post the agenda on Airforums as soon as we arrange for the
band, which will play Northern New Mexico music.
The weather in September is great - warm during the day, and cool at night. We look
forward to seeing as many 4CU’ers as possible!
This is a Four Corners Rally, but all are welcome just PM us and we can sponsor those who wish to attend-
The Rally Fee's are 0$, but camping fees are 10$ a night and can be paid when you arrive there-Anthony & Tamara Rodriguez

That is amazing,in the 70`s,I owned 5 acres across the lake from the dam,the only thing on the lake was the ramp, and a small primitive campground. It`s amazing how people can ruin such a beautiful landscape. Dave

I think the state park is beautiful. It is also one of the only lakes in the area that are not drained to pay for water that is owed to Texas. The water in the lake doesn't come from the Rio Chama. in the 70's a tunnel was dug accross the mtns and brought from the San Juan River. This park is one that is always there for recreation.

Tamara and I spent Labor Day at Heron. It was nice and warm. Chilly one night. There is going to be a Heritage day event at El Vado lake State park on the same weekend. El Vado is right next door. They will have ristra tying, garlic tying, how to cook in wrought iron and the Van of Enchantment will be there. lots of other cool things will be going on. I am trying to list all of them from memory.

The Heron Lake Rally was great!

The last of the Heron Lake Ralliers left today for various parts... Anthony & Tamara did a great job of hosting the gathering and planning much of the fun we had...we had a Taco Bar one night, a Chili Cook-off another night complete with prizes for 1st place (Lois & Brian) & 2nd place (Howard & Carolyn)...they were all great chili experiences! And we even got to watch an outdoor movie...Capetown to Cairo with Wally Byam...those folks were road warriors! And as always we had tons of conversation, laughs and memorable times. There were 10 Airstreams and a few other RVs in the crowd...we had about 25 adults, 15 kids and 18 dogs...

The setting at Heron Lake was awesome. We were in the Ponderosa Camp area (dry camping), which is right near the lake....and next door to a boat launch so the kayakers, canoers and fishermen were happy...every single site in the loop has a fabulous lake view...it was beautiful. And the weather couldn't have been better..sunny days and gentle breezes...the highest day was 82 degrees and the lowest night was 46 degrees. It did rain today just as Anthony & Tamara were pulling out, but it was a short burst of rain that cleaned the air and made the loop pristine for the next round of campers.

We are staying another couple of days to do some day trips before we head to the Jemez Mt area and a couple of NF campgrounds and eventually ending up in ABQ for the Balloon Fiesta...

We had folks from NM, CO and AZ (just us)...all either 4CU members or affiliates and one who is a member of the PA unit who now lives in ABQ and who is planning to become a 4CU affiliate... Those of you who couldn't make it missed a really great time!

We'll post some pictures when we can...again, thanks, Anthony & Tamara...it was a great 4CU rally! It was sad to see it come to an end...but we'll see you next time!
