That sounds awesome. I would definitely plan to be there, would even try to rearrange my work schedule if necessary. Do you think there would be enough interest to pull this off? The North Georgia and anyone else bunch will also be rallying, probably the 3rd weekend of April.
Sugarfoot, thank you kindly for the comment on the pic of Fall Creek Falls.
My mom grew up just a few miles from the park in the Sequatchie Valley...then moved to Texas when marrying my dad. Tennessee is my home away from the Texas Panhandle.

Rodney, you make me feel old. I sold my old Spotmatic SL (the original Spotmatic WITHOUT an internal meter WITH m42 thread mount) to UPGRADE to the K1000 with a bayonet mount in about 1980... <sigh> Alas, the K1000 has been gone for over twenty years now too...

Wanna talk about the relative merits of the Speed Graphic as a view camera?

Sure would like to join the photo rally, but will be going East to pick up two boats that my father has built for me. I really like the idea of impromptu rallies built around "affinities" as I outlined in a post months ago. It's nice to see that this is one of those. Hope I can participate with fellow enthusiasts some other time. Photography, flyfishing, and kayaking are all "affinities" that interest me. Enjoy the experience and camaraderie.

I set the date at June 8-10 as thats when I will be there (provided that I have landed a teaching job for the next year by then). As I said earlier, if everyone finds another date to be opitimal, I would encourage everyone to go ahead and plan it for that time.

Hey Rodney,

I have camped at Indian Hollow. It was 5 years ago. TENT CAMPING ONLY. The last 3- 4 miles on FR 232 is somewhat rough and overgrown with trees I would call FR232 a jeep trail. No way would I consider pulling a trailer down FR232 just way to narrow from what I recall.

This is the middle of nowhere! We had fresh mountain lion tracks in the middle of our campground. very cool

Now with that said the main gravel road that cuts north/south through this part of the Kaibab Forest is FR422 also known as West Side Rd. It is a very well maintained gravel road extra wide. Two trucks can pass one another at 45 mph without even slowing down. All along FR 422 there are several pull offs that are wide open spaces where you can boondock under 100 Foot + Ponderosa Pines, you could easily set up for dry camping.

Since I have not been on the N. Rim in a while I don't have an exact location for you to boondock. I wish we could make this trip, but I don't think we'll be able to fit it in the schedule this summer.

One idea which may have been said would be to stay one night at the RV park at Jacob Lake. (don't get excited there really isn't a lake) However there is diesel fuel, gas, food, groceries, and a restaurant. That way you can scout out a good boondock spot without the trailer in the early morning. You can take FR461 out of Jacob Lake to access FR 422.

There is also RV camping near the North Rim Lodge. Advanced reservations required at all places.

A couple of additional recommendations:
Buy an Arizona Atlas and Gazetteer DeLorme so you have very detailed maps for traveling the Forest Roads.
Call the Kaibab Ranger station a week before to check on fire reports and road closures.
There are no garbage cans anywhere its pack-in pack-out. Bring extra rope so you can hoist your garbage high in a tree away from camp at night time.
Bear spray, and or a gun is not a bad idea….I’ve never needed it, but this is some of the most remote and least populated land in the continental US.
A bell on your dog’s collar is also a good idea.

Hope this helps,
Brent

That helps a great deal! Thanks a bunch, that idea could have turned ugly!

We need to get some sort of location worked out in the near future. Im fine with boondocking if someone has a good place. Anyway we go we need to lock in the plan.

OK, two camp areas that seem centrally located relative to photo ops are Jacob Lake (nat forest CG) at the junction of ALT 89 and 67; and Lee's Ferry on Alt 89 on the Colorado river. Of course there are boondocking options as well. Ideas anyone?

This is what the Lee's Ferry RV camp looks like in Google Earth. You can zoom closer, but this view includes the Colorado River (clear, cold, and green here) for perspective. It's a little deceiving--the RV park is steeply up hill from the river.

Pretty baren, but still convenient to some interesting places. Can someone post photos of the other locations?
