NorCal Summer Rally, Lava Beds, August 7-10

A small rally is being planned for August at the Lava Beds National Monument. The Lava Beds N.M. is located in Northeastern California near the Oregon border. This is a very remote and uncrowded part of California even in the summer. The air, water and sky are crystal clear. The nighttime sky is truely awesome there. I saw the Space Station pass overhead last summer plus many shooting stars. Eagles Nest RV Park is delightful with full hookup grassy sites with free wifi. The RV park is tucked away in a little valley on a ranch. The campground is wonderful because it's all grass. Camping on thick green grass is a luxury. The land around lava beds is beautiful and ranges from thick forest to juniper desert. Lots to do in the area but at the top of the list is the hundreds of caves open for exploring. I enjoyed hiking around Captain Jack's Stronghold where the Modoc War was fought. Make the rally part of a larger trip as this part of Oregon and California is uncrowded and beautiful, such as Lassen National Park.
For Reservations: Call Eagles Nest RV Park 530-664-2081

If we're around, I'm sure we'll make it. It can be hot that time of year so we often head further north.

Remember, we have courtesy parking about 90 miles south on I5.

BigDee, this looks like an amazing place to visit. Is it a one-day drive from our neck of the woods, or should we plan on an overnight enroute? Seems like a good place to drive into in broad daylight.
We've signed up and made reservations. Thanks!
Janet

Lynn and I are definitely interested. We took the kids there years ago (70's?) and really enjoyed it and the surrounding country. It is a long haul so let me talk to Lynn and if we can make it a 'journey' of several days we will go. And we may just take Guy's offer of courtesy parking too.

thats fantastic janet!!! you signed up even before i could sell it at casini. i found this place last summer and was so delighted that i wanted to share it with folks. the lava beds are so out of the way that i have never been there until last year although i've been camping in this part of cali and oregon for years. it really is an amazing place. it sure doesn't seem like cali there, its a different world.

yes, i would recommend spending an overnight enroute. i usually stop overnight in redding at the jgw rv park which is right on the sac river on i5 with easy pull-thrus. what were your reservation dates? i have some friends coming for the weekend with tents. haha i'm staying a week at lava beds, tuesday to tuesday.

Wow, I have been wanting to go here for a while. I will have to see if I can talk the wife in to it. I think I might have a chance. Fellow Airstreamers and Lava Rocks. Thats a combination hard to refuse...

Yes, Dan. A 'cararally' would be fun. We can plan those logistics at Casini. Maybe we can get more cararally participants. Hmmm, janetb, 1953 Flying....what do you say? I just clicked on the Eagles Nest web cam....BRRRR. Only 20 full hookups I see. We all should book early. However, there is camping at Lava Beds too I see. That is where we stayed way back in the 70s.

Dan, you know I want to be there. I'll look at my schedule to see if I can move some other things that are already in the queue for these dates. Jeff

Good lookin' place, and not too far from where we live. The site didn't have too much information about facilities, so may I ask a question or two?

Are there hot showers and bathrooms onsite? It's not crucial - just curious.

Any place to swim? Medicine Lake is described as a 'crater lake' and a great place to fish but no mention of swimming.

Thanks!

The website says "immaculate showers and restrooms" Rated 8.5 by Trailer life.

Nice looking park.

yes they have restrooms and showers. but i never checked them out. the park is small but they never have many campers.

medicine lake is an absolutely beautiful lake. it looks like an alpine lake with thick forest around it. there is a very nice picnic area with swimming beach. only problem is the water is pretty cold like an alpine lake. but when i saw the lake, i sure wish i had my swimming trunks because it was warm and i would've dived in for sure. also this beautiful lake is very uncrowded which makes it unusual in california. there is 2 nice campgrounds there but with no hookups and dirt road access.

i'll gladly answer any other questions...
