Don't let the wild turkeys or deer that will be within 20 feet of you distract you.

Yes - yes I know. You might be right - but still! Thanks for the tips on where to look. Now you will all know where to find me . Looking up and down and all around.

Theraphosidae nights.....
Yes, Buttercup, your dreams will come true! The photo I attached was one that Mark picked up alongside the road whilst mountatain biking. It was dead and does not appear as plumped and threatening as the sinewy, live ones.
The turkeys are another matter. Haven't seen any as road kill yet....

Mating season
apparently it's tarantula mating season in the fall. The big spiders are on the march, looking for a mate. Our kids just LOVED watching them. Aside from the new friends they made, and the Long, Long, Trailer movie on the big screen, the spiders were the highlight of the rally!
Although the foot in this picture looks mighty close, no we didn't step on it!

Yea, I thought that little bugger looked not quite right. I spent an hour educating myself on the species that probably exists there. Did you know that they have lungs?

Turkey Patrol
The Tarantulas are perfect for Halloween festivities. Since Thanksgiving will be coming up not long after the rally, let's not forget these guys too! This was from last years LSA rally...

Might have to make it weekly - I don't have THAT many facts. Bur I will research them. The best part is that they might be creepy but harmless and not poisonous.

The feisty Tarantula! Yes, it is directly related to.....
.....the tarantella dance! Everybody dance now!
Quote:
The tarantella has dubious beginnings, a long history and is credited for naming an Italian wolf spider- the Tarantula. Many Italians have heard of this dance but few actively do it save for cultural events and weddings in the South of Italy.
The Tarantella has found a resurgence through Italian Americans who are reaching back to their roots and hoping to bring something tangible to share with their family and Americans who are curious about this exotic dance.
Origins:
There are many theories on how the Tarantella began, and unless an in-depth study is made into the origins of this dance we cannot say with accuracy which is correct, but here are two of the most popular.
The Bite of A Spider - The dance was used apparently to cure the bite of the spider. The bite of the spider was presumed to make one hallucinate. The town's folk will play music while the afflicted person would dance nonstop, to ward off the spider's venom. FACT: While painful, a tarantula bite is not fatal. However, a bite from a black widow spider, whose venom is ten times more lethal than that of the rattlesnake, can cause acute pain which seems to be alleviated by physical exercise -- thus the tarantella and an identity crisis for the spiders involved.

Yes I did - they flick the hairs from their abdomen if put in a position to defend themselves.
And no I did not know that itching power was tarantula hairs.
I have been spending hours literally trying to identify the species encountered at LSA.
As sick as it sounds I REALLY am looking forward to this. I bought a tarantula puppet in Death Valley and a few of you may remember seeing it on our bed at Casini Ranch. I am fascinated by these creatures. I will offer my services as removal of spiders to anybody who need it there.

Si, but before you rush in with the Patron, señor D Grande, let's investigate if there is a tatrantula elixer of equally damaging effectiveness, i.e. worm in Tequilla....tarantulla in ????
