What is the best way to get there from the bay area?

I was thinking of taking 80 to highway 12, make my way to 101 near Petaluma. Head north on 101 to Santa Rosa, then take 12 West to highway 1. Then take highway 1 North toward Jenner, and cut over on 116 to Ducan Mills.

How does that route sound?

Tim, I would think once your on 12 west, stay on it till you reach 116 in Sebastopol, then head northwest on 116 towards Jenner, and a left onto Moscow Road. Jeff

directions

Tim,
I dont know where you are coming from but, I would take hwy 37 west from I-80 to Lakeville rd. Go right on lakeville. Follow it into Petaluma to 101, then go north. Hwy 12 is very busy and slow at times.
If you ned more help I will be back mon night. Going out to Nev desert to go riding and camping for 4 days.

We drove that way about three years ago w/o the trailer just checking out the area.

It seemed really long if I remember right. Lots of curves and bends. Around each one the kids asked if we were there yet

We came home by continuing on to hwy 1 and down to bodega bay where we took hwy 12 straight back to Santa Rosa.

Tim, your right about a lot of curves and bends. Were planning that route from 101. I think one of the worst routes we've taken is from Willits to Fort Bragg. I don't think there's a stretch of straight hiway that's even 100 ft. in length.

For those coming from the south, stay away from driving GG bridge from say 1:00 pm onward as the traffic on 19th Ave can be horrible on Fridays. I'd recommend the Richmond/ San Rafael bridge instead. This is the way I am coming home as 101 can get very backed up on Sunday afternoon, too. I know this from much experience from trying to get home many times from Duncans Mills. Either way, stuck in traffic is not a pleasent way to start or end a nice weekend. A little planning now can save much headache later.

I'm Thinking Caravan?

Hey ya'll,
I stay over by Vacaville, and I make this trip five or more times a yr. I go 80 to 12 then go the Napa route 116 to 101. These roads are fine. I then stay on 101 thru Santa Rosa, and take River road. River rd. takes you past Korbell winery thru Rio Nido along the Russian River and right into Duncan Mills. Great road, great views. Open to all options. - Ray.

pinkflamingoes update

It looks like we're coming up for just the day. We're going to ride the Skunk Train later in April to celebrate Jeff's birthday later in April so that about maxes out his ability to take any real time off besides one day.

Also, our daughter is now playing softball (four pitches and then the tee, but she hit one off the pitcher last week!!) And Big Daddy is coaching, she has a game that day at 9 am. Forget asking him to let her skip a game. I get my way everywhere else in this marriage, I'm not even going there!!

It's a short drive there, and we can go home late. I'm looking forward to it. Still bringing the GPS and my hiking boots!!

Bay Area to Duncan's Mills

Hey

we drive up the coast to the Sea Ranch every weekend, either from our home in Oakland or from my office in SF. I'd say, the easiest way to get to DM from Oakland is to take 80/580 across the Richmond Bridge, and then 101 North to 116 west. 580 into San Rafael is kind of a bottle neck nearing rush hour, but 101 from there north is SO much nicer then being on 80. If 116 before Guernville is too windy for ya, you could keep going on 101 to the River road, and then west. That isn't super windy.

I was wondering how it is to drive on the windy coast roads with a trailer, and I got my chance to find out on Friday. I towed the Globinator up from Oakland to it's new home at the Sea Ranch, 580 to 101 to Bodega Highway to Highway 1, towing it with our 4 liter Ranger. I was amazed how easy it was to tow, especially on the twisty and hilly bits. I was expecting a scene from the Long Long Trailer when I climbed the Jenner Grade, but the whole thing was no sweat. I imagine it may be different for the longer trailers, but I maybe not? The Airstream seemed really balanced and handled really well. I can hardly wait to take it out again, heading north past Mendocino.

It sure sounds like a great rally, wish I could be there.

Are you going to try to sneak into Bohemian Grove? It's only a couple of miles away.

There are lots of ways to get there...River Road through Gurenville exit off 101 will be the least windy...Bohemian Hwy is quite twisty for hauling trailers... but 101 gets backed up during rush hr... briefly on the Cotati grade north of Petaluma...and from Rohnert Park Expressway to Windsor...

Local Radio stations recommended...the KRUSH ,KRSH 95.9 FM(eclectic),
The RIVER ,KVRV 97.7 (Classic Rock), and 104.9 (Country) usually come in pretty good and can give you traffic reports...

Potluck

Hey Dee

thanks for the invite, but we'll be away then, otherwise I/we'd love to. I love potlucks, and I make a killer flourless chocolate cake... I'm waiting for the fall delta trip.

Thumbs up Are We Going Rain or Shine???

I have to call Casini soon to let them know if we are coming or not. They let me wait til now so we can see how the weather will be and make a decision. I am so antsy to get camping and already have Friday off so I am game rain or shine. I just need to get out in my rig. I camp a lot in Oregon and Washington and they NEVER let the rain ruin a camping trip, as I learned. I think it's going to be too hard to predict the weather more than a week off. So do we go ahead? How does everyone else feel? I don't want to put a deposit down for all the sites and then have a whole bunch of no-shows. That would cost me money. So, are we committed rain or shine? Let's hear from everyone.
