New Orleans Habitat Rally Dec 28-30, 2010

Join us for a unique opportunity - camping and construction in The Big Easy - this is the 2010 New Orleans Habitat Rally. It's a rally that's not a rally - it's much more!

We'll be staying at Bayou Segnette State Park http://www.crt.state.la.us/parks/ibyusegne.aspx just outside New Orleans. Make your camping reservations at www.reserveamerica.com The camp sites have water and 50 amp electric. There is a dump station in the campground. I was told the campground has wi-fi but I don't see that listed on the amenities page - you may want to call the campground directly to check on wi-fi availability.

The Habitat for Humanity work days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday December 28, 29 and 30. You can work any one, two or all three days. The work hours are generally 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM. All the New Orleans area Habitat houses are within an easy drive of Bayou Segnette S.P. Please sign-up on the rally page and indicate which day(s) you will be working. In early December I will work with Habitat to arrange an assignment for our group. We will likely be able to work together on the same house but there is a chance our group may be assigned to work at more than one site - we will not know for certain until we receive our assignment from Habitat. Even then, the assignments can change on short notice due to weather and other construction issues.

This is a unique rally and I think you'll find it very rewarding. There will be plenty of time for socializing at the campground after work and for visiting local establishments for dining and other fun. Plan to come a day or two early and stay a day or two after. New Year's in New Orleans! Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Made My Reservation

I realize the rally is about nine months from now but I made our reservation - site 17. I selected the option to pay for one night ($18) plus the reservation fee ($5) so I can keep my out of pocket cost to a minimum for now.

It's A Habitat Year

I just signed up for Habitat through our church for late April. My employer is also working on a Habitat house this spring. Both of those will be interesting and enjoyable but I'm really looking forward to Habitat in New Orleans.

Please be aware that Habitat also offers another means for RVers to be involved with building a house. Check out RV Care-A-Vanners -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l I've never been able to work RV Care-A-Vanners into my schedule but it sounds like fun.

Thanks for Questions/Comments

I received several comments and questions via PM so I'm pleased to see some people giving this rally some consideration. I realize it's early to be planning for "the holidays" but that time of year will be here soon.

I've found several neat things to do and see around New Orleans (there's no shortage!) that will fit into the holiday time frame. I'll make a list and post at a later date.

Thanks for planning this wonderful way of giving back!
I had the pleasure of working on a Habitat house start to finish some years ago - it was very rewarding and I learned a lot.

What is the minimum age to participate? It seems to vary from state to state. My son will be 17.

Thanks!

Age Requirements

I found the following on the New Orleans Habitat web site. I copied and pasted from the Habitat document (bold letters are from the original document). It looks like your son would be able to participate but there are some restrictions.

Age Restrictions for Minors

It is the policy of Habitat that children under the age of 16 are not allowed on a Habitat worksite while there is any construction in progress. It is further the policy of Habitat that while children between the ages of 16 and 18 may be allowed to participate in construction work, activities such as using power tools, excavation, demolition or working on rooftops is not permitted by anyone under the age of 18.

Those volunteers between the ages of 16 and 18 can do general construction but cannot do excavation, demolition, use power tools or work at heights above 12 feet. They can do general carpentry. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have their waiver of liability signed by a parent.

Anyone over the age of 18 can do any of the various construction jobs on the site.

Thank you, Lucius!

We are having a family talk about possibly visiting family near Atlanta for Christmas, then heading over to join in on the build. It may be a little while before DH can get work sched for that time of year and arrange vacation days off.

Thanks also for the RV Care-A-Vanners info. We signed up in hopes that a build closer to home becomes available.

I certainly hope you can make it. Consider signing up on the rally page Airstream Forums - Dec 28-30, 2010 New Orleans Habitat Rally even if it's a maybe at this point. I think this will be a very interesting rally and a first of it's kind on Airforums.

One of my brothers has a fifth wheel SOB and he's considering joining us from Florida. He's relatively new to RVing but he indicated he and his wife are very interested in participating.

If there is sufficient interest we can plan a pot luck dinner, campfire, etc.

Arriving on Sun 12/26, Departing on Saturday 1/1

93 Excella,

We'll be arrving on Sunday probably mid to late afternoon. Habitat does not work on Monday so that gives Danielle and I plenty of time to settle in for the week before work starts on Tuesday.

We're departing around noon on Saturday 1/1.

We're interested in seeing some local, live music while we're in New Orleans. I've stumbled across Rock N Bowl - it looks like a fun place.

www.rocknbowl.com

We hope to see you at the rally.

Creole String Beans

No it's not the name of a new dish at your favorite restaurant (although it sounds good)... it's the name of a unique band from the New Orleans area.

Creole String Beans - New Orleans, LA - home

Their calendar is not scheduled for December yet but I hope they're playing sometime during the week of the Habitat rally. I'd love to see them. Check out their web page for some video clips.

Alternate Means of Giving

Consider giving your time rather than your money. There are many organizations vying for volunteer time and Habitat for Humanity is worthy of your consideration.

Summer is winding down, in many places the kids are either back in school or will be there soon. It's time to start thinking about the holidays. I saw Halloween merchandise on the store shelves recently so Christmas and the New Year are just around the corner.

Money is likely tight in your budget so consider giving your time. Join us in New Orleans for a little sawin' and hammerin'.

Lucius,

Check post # 625 here:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f227...-18448-45.html

You’ll see that we are heading that way at that time.

I’d like to participate and will make time to register later this week.

‘Hope to meet other ‘Airstreamers for Habitat’ then too.

All the best,

Sergei

Combining Work and Pleasure

We have a couple rigs signed-up and a few more maybe's. SmokelessJoe is giving it some thought. I think this is going to be an interesting and enjoyable rally. We'll plan a pot-luck and maybe some other activities as the rally draws near.

Don't forget to RSVP on the rally announcement page (even if it's maybe) so I can begin to get a headcount. The headcount will be important so Habitat will be able to assign our group to an appropriate build site. I know it's still several months away but it will be here before you know it.
