Continuing to Update List

nvestysly - 2 people: Tue, Wed, Thur
SmokelessJoe - 1 person: Tue, Wed, Thur (afternoons only)
93 excella - 4 people: Tue, Wed, Thur

Any word out there from txstreamer, 2Tex4Fun, CrzyCorpsman, Ladylongwing?

Watching TV, going shopping and lounging around after Christmas is going to become very boring, very fast. There's only so much xbox360 and wii a person can take. Considering joining us for fun, food and fellowship with a cause.

Slight Change in Plans But Overall Good News

The good news is we are tentatively approved to work on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - December 27 - 30. So if you were just itching to work more than three days you can now start on Monday.

It turns out Habitat for Humanity cannot accomadate our group but St. Bernard Project is very willing to have us work with them. St. Bernard Project is very similar to Habitat. You can check out their web site at www.stbernardproject.org

St. Bernard is the Parish just southeast of New Orleans (you don't even realize you've left New Orleans) and they are much more flexible dealing with our group. I will post an email/web address in the next day or so and you'll be able to register for the days you plan to work.

I'm looking forward to this. It's definitely a unique "rally" and I hope others will join us. Who wants to eat all that leftover ham anyway? Come out and swing a hammer with us.

Lucius

P.S. check out some additional information about St. Bernard Project

When you volunteer with us, you will be helping someone like Ms. Dupre.

And this video shows the fun and meaningful work that our volunteers do each week.

In addition, these recent media clips tell the story of St. Bernard Project well:

New York Times: With Help After Storm, A Chance to Give Back
CNN Heroes: Liz McCartney Acceptance Speech
Wall Street Journal: "Nobody Does It Better"
WWL-TV: Color Purple Case Goes From Stage to the Street for a Good Cause

Lastly, check out our blog, writeen by volunteers, staff and other partners.

Thank you for your willingness to rebuild homes and lives in the New Orleans area.

Online Sign-up

I sent a PM to those of you who indicated you will be attending. In case I've missed anyone I'm posting here too. Our group is approved to work Mon, Tue, Wed & Thur (Dec 27 - 30). Note Monday has been added - that was not part of the original schedule. It's not necessary to work Monday but I wanted everyone to know the option is available.

Please register you/your family/friends (whomever is traveling in your group) at the link below. The link requests contact information, number in your party, etc. You're not registering everyone at the rally - only the people in your RV.

Just Filled Out My Form - One Per Person

I just filled out the sign-up form for the St. Bernard Project. A few notes:

1) You must fill out the form for each person. So if there are four in your party you complete the form four times.

2) There is a drop down menu for the group you are participating with - we are Airsreamers.

3) You will receive an email indicating our work days are Monday - Thursday. If you only plan to work Tuesday - Thursday or some other subset of days that's okay.

Danielle and I are considering going to see Tab Benoit at the Rock N Bowl on New Years Eve. Anyone else interested? Click on the link below to order tickets or call Rock N Bowl 504-861-1700

Christmas week work

Any word out there from txstreamer, 2Tex4Fun, CrzyCorpsman, Ladylongwing?

I'm hoping to know more about my plans by next weekend. Will that be too late? I'm having some construction issues here at home and am not sure yet it will be "safe" to leave. Is everyone still staying at the state campground? I have a couple of lady friends who would be interested but they are not campers. Any suggestions for housing?

Anne (Ladylongwing)

Not Too Late...

Anne,

We'd like you to join us if you can work out the details. Here's the link to register:

St. Bernard Project Management System - Registration

Each person must fill out a registration. Fill out the drop-down box and indicate you're with the Airstreamers group. The registration form does not allow you to select the days you are working - it simply defaults to Monday - Thursday. If you're working less than that please let me know so St. Bernard project can plan accordingly.

Regarding places to stay... Check out the link on the St. Bernard Project web site:

Housing Options--St Bernard Project -- Help Rebuild New Orleans

If they want to stay near Bayou Segnette State Park look for hotels on the Westbank Expressway (New Orleans West Bank area). Here's a Best Western I found on a web search:

Best Western Bayou Inn, Westwego Louisiana

Otherwise, if they want to be close to the work site look for hotels in Chalmette, LA or St. Bernard Parrish

Less Than Two Weeks To Go...

There are 3 people signed up for Monday and 7 for Tue - Thur. Anyone else out there?

weather.com isn't making a prediction for our dates yet but if averages hold true we should be in for low to mid 60's for high temps. Not bad for those who are accustomed to freezing weather during Christmas.

Come out an join us. You know what they say about all the visiting and hanging around with family during the holidays... it's much like fish - they begin to stink after a few days.

Swing a hammer, push a broom, move some lumber... you're sure to receive more than you give when you pay it forward.

It's Final - Tue, Wed, Thur

It looked like there was going to be a conflict with working on Monday so I removed our name from that day. So Tue, Wed and Thur are the dates for our group.

Based on the information below there will be 7 of us from Airforums:

nvestysly - 2 people: Tue, Wed, Thur
SmokelessJoe - 1 person: Tue, Wed, Thur (afternoons only)
93 excella - 4 people: Tue, Wed, Thur

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in New Orleans. Danielle and I will be arriving at Bayou Segnette sometime on Sunday. That gives us Monday to find our way around and get set-up.

Let's plan on getting together late Monday afternoon to check-in with each other. Send me a PM with your cell phone number if you have not done so already. If you don't have a cell phone no problem. Let's meet at Bayou Segnette around 4 - 4:30 if possible.

Christmas in Natchez,MS/Vidalia, LA

We're en route to New Orleans. Traveled from Tupelo, MS to Natchez, MS today on the Natchez Trace. We're staying at RiverView campground in Vidalia, LA (just across the Mississippi River from Natchez).

Hmmmm.... I'm trying to upload some pictures but doesn't seem like it's working for me. If they do show up.... Picture of Elvis Presley's birthplace, looking down from Emerald Indian Mound, Christmas tree in Vidalia, LA

We're Settled in at Bayou Segnette

We arrived a couple hours ago. Settled in... watching a little football on network TV - pretty good reception.

Unfortunately the WIFI at Bayou Segnette will not permit us to connect to "streaming video" sites so I guess we won't be watching college football games this week. Arrrrggggghhhh! Guess we'll have to go out to eat at a local sports bar so we can watch the USF vs. Clemson game on Friday.

Tomorrow is a our day to look around town. We're planning to go the WWII museum in the AM. After that.... ???? maybe one of Jim's suggestions.

Looking forward to meeting the 93Excella crew and working for St. Bernard Project later this week.

Three Days of Food, Fellowship, Fun....

.... And helping others.

The last three days have gone by quickly. The project we worked on for St. Bernard Project was very interesting. The homeowners are a young couple with a recent baby. The house will be ready for them in the next few weeks.

Our team assisted with installing doors, some flooring, painting doors, interior caulking, general clean-up and having fun. There was lots of eating too! The New Orleans area certainly has lots to offer.

Tomorrow is a sight-seeing day for the contingent from Kentucky and a college football bowl watching day for the contingent from Georgia.

We've had a nice time here and will considering returning some time. If you're inclined to volunteer some time (or money) please consider the St. Bernard project or one of the many other organizations in the NO area.

Our volunteer leaders indicated there are many thousands of homes still to be rebuilt in this area. At the current rate it will take 16 years to complete the rebuilding. Let's spread the word and do what we can to speed up the process.
