Southern Vermont

King Richard,

I though you said southern VT last night on the chat! I'd do it, but am in NC with the Marines and we are very, I mean, VERY, busy right now. I'm still going to call my supervisor and ask abot my home town.

Rob

Well, this was Yukionna's idea, so I was thinking SHE should make the call.

But if I really were "King," I'd propose Jamaica State Park in southern Vermont, somewhere around Aug 20.

From the State Parks guide: "Nestled on the West River just of Rt 30 in Jamaica VT. The river provides good fishing, swimming, tubing, paddling, or just a quiet place to be massaged by clear Vermont waters. The park has 43 spacious tent/trailer sites. The park has three popular trailers that visitors can choose from. One winds along the river, another leads above the campground to Hamilton Falls where crystal clea water cascades 125 feet into three separate pools. Nature programs are available for kids and adults, and the Nature Center is a fun and educational place for all ages. Hot showers, dumping station. Area attractions include Hildene, Butterfly Heaven, Bromley Alpine Slide, Mt Snow, Townsend Dam and Reservoir, Adams Farms, North River Winery and Basketvile."

Also not far away is The Vermont Country Store, which is very popular with visitors. the park is about 30 minutes off I-91, about 3 hours from Boston, 5 hours from NYC, and (for those of you coming from the west) 80 miles from Albany NY.

The catch is that all Vermont State Parks lack hookups. So this would require boondocking, which I know doesn't appeal to everyone. (But this time of year A/C is not needed in Vermont.) It's also a small park so we'd probably be limited to 10-15 units. There are commercial CGs in the area as well with full hookups and more space, which are fine, but they lack the ambience of Jamaica SP.

If this interests enough people, I'll check on dates, otherwise -- someone else offer a date/time!

My mom was born in Jamaica. just thought I'd throw that out there...

I swam at the Townsend damn many times in my youth. nice area.

anyway...wasn't the original proposal for sometime in the fall? if so, the area is pretty well booked up, campgrounds included, during foliage season (early-mid Oct.). and I think the state cg's all close on the 15th or Columbus Day, whichever comes first.

It wouldn't be unusual to want A/C in August, though...

If you put pins on a map Jamaica looks like the center. About the same from Boston and NY folks. I agree with Chuck about the AC. Before the peepers in Sept like the 18th and we may have the place to ourselves. The water release on the 25th will be a zoo.

Couldn't find any info on trailer size restrictions so I guess there aren't any.

I have some NJ, some Boston, a NH, a Connecticut, a N Vermont, some Eastern NY, and NC??? Other than Labor Day Weekend and Week I'm solid to be there unless it's going to be hot at night and no AC.

I'm game for whatever the majority would like to do! It looks like most everyone is leaning toward Jamaica State Park so that works for me too! I don't have any preference myself...I just want to go camping and meet forum folks!

With regards to timing, I only suggested the fall because I never thought we could pull something together any sooner due to everything being already booked. I am already booked for September but am open on two August weekends: the 20th and 27th.

Can you check to see if either of those August dates have availability?

I'll call on the park availability tomorrow.

I'd be surprised if A/C was needed Aug 20 or later. Traditionally, after my birthday, (8/13) in Vermont we are putting on sweatshirts in the evenings. We call my birthday "the last day of summer." Of course, we live 100 miles north of Jamaica. And you never know ...

But hey, if it's hot, those swimming holes are going to look GOOD!

August timeframe

We're already going to the WDCU unit rally in Cape Hatteras August 15-22, something more in end of Sept / October would be better....but I'm a minority here I think....

I'll check on a range of dates for Jamaica SP from Aug 20 through mid-Sept. But Labor Day weekend is out (too busy), and after mid-Sept through early October we will be inundated with leaf-peepers. After the leaves are down, we have a week or two before it's time to winterize up here. *sigh* At that point we'd have to consider more southern locations, especially those close to the coast (as in CT, RI, and MA).

Are you members of the WDCU? If so, will you be attending the joint NEU/WDCU Big "E" Rally in September?

Your leaf people are earlier than ours as are your cool nights. We are still waiting for warm nights here. May not have Summer this year. The AC concern is the 14 year old 60 pound poodle. He'll keep the whole campground awake panting if he's hot.

there's also a couple of campgrounds in Townsend (next town south), at least one of which is also right on the West River. I believe there's been a wally-club rally there before....might be worth checking out, too.

OK, here are the dates that Jamaica State Park is available to us:

August 27-28
September 11-12
September 17-18 (same dates as Region 1 "Big E" rally)
October 1-2

If you like swimming, you want a date in August or early Sept. If you like foliage, you want the Oct 1-2 weekend. If you want hookups, the Bald Mtn CG in Townsend is probably available and only a few miles down the road. I was at the Wally-club rally there last fall. It's pleasant but a tad boring.

For more info about Jamaica SP, see this link: http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/jamaica.cfm

Vote here for your favorite weekend, and let's get this party going! (Should we post a poll?)

Thanks for following up! August 27-28 and Oct 1-2 works for me!
