Moraine View 2009 Rally in Jeopardy

I'll keep you all posted but State of Illinois budget cuts have earmarked Moriane View State Park as one of 11 that will be closing by the end of the month. Our local St. Louis paper picked up on the story that many private concessioners within the parks have been given letters telling them to take their personal property out of the parks by Novemember 1st. The story noted the business who provides the horseback riding facility in Moraine View.

I also found this story in the local LeRoy Illinois newspaper.
Pantagraph.com | News | Many people emotional over closing of Moraine View State Park

So where that puts us for next June's rally is somewhat up for grabs. We've been doing this for six years and for all intents our plans were to move forward for year 7.

Whether the park will be opened up for next season is up for grabs. Obviously we can't wait forever and as you are all aware, I usually begin the call for reservations by late February or early March.

Moraine has been a great location for us since the folks up there have worked well on keeping us together and the location is fairly central. I'll be open for suggestions with the understanding that it may be hard to find a place that works as well as Moraine has.

We could consider moving to a private campground, with the hope that we can get water and electric to each site. That would be an improvement over Moraine where we must tote in our own water. Costs per site would obviously higher and we would need to get reservations in quickly. While I'd love to pony up and reserve sites, I really don't want to get put on the hook hoping that I could recoup my reservation money.

So let's watch what goes on. The folks in LeRoy are trying to convince the governor to change his mind and keep Moraine open. We will probably have to make some choices around the first of the year. Those of you who live in Illinois might have some better information regarding what is going on so keep this thread in mind if you have something to share.

Regards,

Jack

A possible alternative

I camped at Ramsey Lake State Park earlier in the year and was really impressed. They have a shady 24-site group campground with electric sites and several water spigots. There are no pads - just grass with three 30 amp hookups per post. You can park any way you'd like as long as your power cord reaches the post.

They reserve sites in the group campground in groups of three because of the electric hookups. The sites are $18 per night with the ability to cancel up to three days in advance.

There's also the main campground where we can reserve individual sites around a pavilion for $20 per night.

A Possible Alternative

While it would be a bit further South, The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds campground is a wonderful place for a Rally in DuQuoin, IL -- and the price is comparable to what we have been paying at Moraine View and includes water and electric.

There have been a number of WBCCI Unit rallys held at the fairgrounds, and the campground is quite nice.

Moraine View rally in jeopardy

Jack, what you summarized about Moraine View State Park closing and the article in the Pantagraph are in line with what we locals are hearing in the Bloomington/Normal/LeRoy area. It is prudent to look at other site options for the 2009 rally.

I'd be a little nervous about locking in on other State of Illinois facilities for June 2009.

Moraine View's central location was great. How far south would folks be able to travel, especially those who come to Moraine View from areas further north, east and west of Central Illinois?

I might have problems anyway if it's going to be fathers' day weekend again. So make your own decisions. Brown County State Park in Indiana is huge and right near the artsy-craftsy town of Nashville. I don't know about their group camping possibilities. We had a few members from that area at the last Moraine View -- maybe they'd post here.

I'd be totally flabbergasted if the Governor closed DuQuoin State Fairgrounds -- however, he did flabbergast me when he closed the Dana Thomas House in Springfield, IL.

Anyway, Overlander64, if we rally in DuQuoin, then it would be just a short drive to go get you if you have vehicle trouble like last year trying to get to Moraine View!

I'm a native Southern Illinoisan so I'd be partial to a location in Southern Illinois. Yet I do worry about losing the folks who would have to drive that extra distance.

My thoughts are that it's only prudent to look for alternates, but I can tell you for a short weekend getaway, much more than a few hundred miles is just not going to be possible for a number of reasons. Moraine was the perfect middle point for most. Perhaps the worst case may not happen....our idiotic governor may even be going to jail, so who know what cuts he will even be able to make.

This might be a good alternative location. It's probably 20 miles east of Moraine View. Full hookups for $20 ?

Doesn't look too bad. 20 miles won't make much of a difference. I would really like to keep the location as close as possible to Moraine.

I don't see a contact number. Who do you get a hold of for further info?

Sounds like Prairie Pines has potential. Let us know if you want us to drive over and take a look at the campground. Rantoul, IL is about 50 miles from us.

If you guys get the bug to go out for a ride, I'd appreciate you looking. I'm also interested in the pot luck so that we can all get together. Not all locales let you move tables..(some are chained down to the site). Also need to check out the reservation system to see if they would allow us to reserve separately.
