MO - Boondocking Rally - Back to Nature

Tikiman started the idea a year ago... This fall, September 27-30, it's a boondocking rally.

We’ll be the only campers next to the lake at Rudolf Bennitt Conservation Area in Missouri. Enjoy a 48 acre fishing lake, a twelve mile multi-use hike/bike/horse trail and 3,500+ acres of forest, fields and grasslands and two intermittent streams.

Fishing, Hiking, Biking, Paddling, Stargazing, Relaxing

Come get away from the lights, noise and congestion of town and spend some time relaxing and remembering what bull frogs sound like and what a starry night sky looks like overhead.

This is not a campground, there are no ammenities - no hook-ups, electricity, running water. We'll be camping right next to the lake in our group. The area is not large, we'll park the trailers in a circle and then park our tow vehicles in the parking lot.

We're hopeful by September there will be rain and we can have a campfire.

Rally agenda

Friday night there will be a campfire and we’ll roast hot dogs and marshmallows.

Saturday we will have a catch and release fishing tournament and a potluck dinner where we’ll give out some fun fishing awards.

We also would like to do a service project. MDC has been nice to give us special permission to camp by the lake (and are not charging us a fee) so we’d like to show our appreciation by picking up litter around the boat dock area and the lake, perhaps an hour on Saturday morning.

Weather permitting each night, we’ll put up the telescope and check out the moon and a few planets.

So, come on out - explore, relax, and rejuvenate with Mother Nature!

Tikiman,

Do you know if we'll hear any Whippoorwills at Rudolf Bennitt?

Thanks!

In Just 10 Days...

...we'll be camping by the lake!

I can't believe the summer has gone by and fall is here, the weather sure feels like fall in St. Louis, we're supposed to get down into the 40s tonight. But hey, it's St. Louis, I'm sure it will be unseasonably warm in just a few days...

The game plan for our Boondocking Rally looks like it's going to work out:

Friday Night - campfire and hot dog roast - I'll also make a pot of chili in the dutch oven :-)

Saturday - service project and a fun catch and release fishing tournament. I think ya 'all have camera photos or digital cameras, bring 'em along and take some photos before you release 'em back. We'll do a pot luck this night... and have another campfire (s'mores) and give out fish awards. There may even be a bit of guitar music and cowboy songs to serenade us around the fire.

And there's plenty of time for relaxing, hiking and biking and yes, Brian, if you want to go out with the long bow... I think that's totally do-able!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone next week!

Tina

I'm planning on heading to the lake on Thursday afternoon (27th). Figure I'll get my "scouting" for deer out of the way before the festivities. Will there be anyone there then? I' m more concerned as to where to set up. Is there a designated "boondocking" area? Any direction or guidelines for the area would be appreciated.

Hi Brian,

We're getting there on Thursday too. When you arrive at the fishing area, there is a road down to the left from the parking lot. It's the one in the photo in the first post. They want us to put the trailers there at the end which is the photo that looks like the road ends in a circle and then park in the parking lot. Does that make sense?

My guess is that Brian (Tikiman) is coming on Thursday too, we'll see what he chimes in .

Looking forward to seeing you.

Tina

Ok, I checked the area out today and spoke with area staff. My idea was that we will utilize the gravel area at the end of the circle. I was planning on pulling up Friday morn, but I could stop in Thursday afternoon after 3pm if I knew what time you thought you might arrive. This would allow me to give Tina the permit. we'll have plenty'o firewood for big bonefires. I'll bring big trash bags for the cleanup.

My ETA is roughly 5:00 pm (+/-) Thursday. Certainly no earlier than 3:00

I've managed to exhaust my vacation time so I won't arrive until Friday evening. I'm working some extra hours so I can leave a little early to avoid rush-hour traffic through St. Louis.

I noticed we're going to have a full moon this weekend.

How does a pot of homemade chicken soup sound for Saturday's potluck?

We will be arriving on Friday afternoon. Thinking about making beef stew in the dutch oven.
