Sounds good, John. Number 35 is a back-in, that will put you right next to JordanDVM. Just email your full name, number of people, and tow vehcile license plate # for the park paperwork, and you can pay the $34 when you get there.

It'll be good to meet you finally!

Hey, this is turning out to be quite a little get-together. Anyone else? We have two more spots. Speak up soon!

Shoulda planned our little move to Bend a little earlier now that you mention s'mores... LOL.

We're in Green River, Utah after about 450 miles from Santa Fe today. Staying in a hotel of all things - due to many factors. The A/S pulls like a dream as always. We've dubbed her the "Silver Suitcase" for this trip - she's our life support - there's eight of us (including critters) in the Touareg - no animals in the trailer. Here's how it works:

2 people upfront, obviously.
1 person in the back seat, the big side is folded down.
1 German Shepherd next to the person in the back
2 pet crates in the cargo section with a cardboard panel on top - in the crates go our cats, water, food, and little litter boxes and on top goes a large sized dog donut bed.
2 small dogs ride in the donut bed (of course, the Russell has spent zero time in the bed and 100% of the time on the lap of whoever is riding shotgun...)

They all seem pleased. We stop every couple of hours for a RUN.

I think we deserve an award for efficient packing, don't you?

We'll be staying in Idaho tonight if all goes as planned and will pull into Bend on Saturday. Still not enough time to rouse the troops for a mini-rally, though. Wish we were there. You all have a great time and check in with us for the next one.

Here's a pic outside of Moab, Utah at Wilson Arch late yesterday.

Have a great day everybody!

Wow, verry efficient. But totally understandable why you won't make it to the mini-rally. But don't worry, it won't be the last. Maybe once you get settled in you can organize the next one on your side of the mountains?

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

X, I agree with Stef. Amazingly efficient! I want to know how you have things set up for the cats. My cat isn't doing too well with her new owners and I'm tempted to try to bring her along....but as she is an ex-feral cat and totally freaked out about change, I'm not sure life on the road would suit her. Ugh! I'm never getting another pet....

At any rate, it's too bad you can't make it to the coast this time. I'd like to see your menagerie (sp?).

Hi All,

We made it all the way to Boise tonight! (where's allyvs when you need her? LOL! Hi Ally!). Driving this morning up through Price, Utah was a bit unsettling. Saw a jack-knifed semi-trailer and lots of snow... But we made it through it fine - slowly. Two years ago we were towing our vintage A/S and broke a side window on the same stretch of road. We are not very fond of that drive...

This is a move to Bend and not just a short-term visit. Of course, we have to like it but we intend to "base-camp" from there and explore the beautiful NW regardless.

Hope to see and meet you all real soon.

X

For those that are interested, here's a pic of our backend setup I took for you this afternoon outside of SLC. Please forgive the "Rube Golberg" appearance. It really does work great. BTW, we do let the cats out too for time to stretch. Iggy's on top watching my wife tending the kitties.

The other pic is of the snow we found this morning...

Great news on your move to Oregon and the Northwest!! You'll enjoy the high desert (similar to Sante Fe). It's also great to see posts with AS's on the move in the Western United States.....esp CCD's. Your pet arrangement is well organized, and much better than putting kittys in the AS. Sounds like you've been doing a kinda "non-stop" route to Bend, OR! Are your knuckles white yet (from driving thru snow)???? Doesn't allow much time for sight seeing. That will come later! What route are you taking from Boise to Bend......Hwy 20 thru Burns, or 26 thru John Day?? We took Hwy 20 from Ontario, OR off I-80 thru Burns to Bend. Nice drive....mostly high desert. If weather forecast is dry, it's pretty safe......just kinda bumpy with expansion joints in the road. Have a safe remainder of your trip and keep us posted on this momentous move!

Hey Jim, et al,

Let's just say that yesterday took lots of concentration. There weren't many other TT's on the road for good reason.

I was looking at the map last night, Jim, and was wondering about Hwy 20. It's 20 miles farther to take Hwy 26 thru John Day, in my estimation. You think it worth the extra since we've seen so much high desert in our lives already? We would like to take the most beautiful route into Bend, if you catch my drift.

Thanks for the help. We're off in a couple of hours.

Jay

X,
Hwy 20 I remember had these "expansion joints" that rocked the AS & TV for quite a distance east of Burns for not so comfortable drive. The drive is scenic around Juntura thru the canyons. Hwy 26 is more scenic thru forested high desert, and you'll be passing thru some scenic areas from Unity to John Day. 26 is a lot longer trip, and I think is higher in elevation, so greater chance of hitting snow. Personally, I'd choose Hwy 20. We ran into snow when camped at BLM CG at Chickahominy Reservoir 3 wks ago.....was a complete surprise and some white knuckle driving.

Snow?

Ok, I could look at my map more closely, but is there any kind of snow between I5 and the coast (coming down south from Portland)? I really didn't even think that we'd hit any. Am I wrong? I haven't bought chains for the Dodge yet.... actually, I haven't bought any chains for our Seattle snow, it disappears so fast.

Not yet 3Ms. Snow west of the Cascades in Oregon is usually only somewhat common in Jan/Feb. Even then it normally doesnt stick long. The west part of the state hasnt been cold enough for snow yet.

I live just west of Portland.

We've been to the coast in winter, and as long as you take a major highway over the coast range, we've never had a problem. The road crews are pretty quick about keeping the roads clear. They take particularly good care of the highway that leads to the Grand Rond Casino - coincidence? I think not

The beach itself is usually mild enough that snow isn't an issue.
