March 2006 Forum Rally LBL Kentucky

Some of us on the Forums have decided to step out and attempt a Forum Rally. It will be held March 17-19 in the North end of the Land Between the Lakes in Western Kentucky also know as LBL. We are planning on using the Hillmans Ferry Campground which opens March 1st.

http://www.kentuckylake.com/lbl/hillmanferry.htm

No formal seminars or meetings, but campers could visit the 1850's homeplace, the Elk and Bison Prairie, Patty's 1850's Resturant as well as other sites. Mostly we are looking for folks who want to shake off the winter blues and camp.

Weather is unpredictible that time of year in Kentucky, but don't let that stop you from joining us.

Not a definite but we are sure going to try.
I have to get back to Patty's for a pork chop, that's for sure!
Love Hillman Ferry but have never camped there before. We usually use the A.C. of E. Canal Campground.
Hope to see a good turn-out.

I looked into the Canal campground, but it doesn't open until April 1st. Hillmans Ferry is just about 5 miles on down the road.

Hope you have a great forums rally. I have already made plans for a trip to FL or I would be there.

Thumbs up

I will certainly be spending some time on the elk and bison prairie getting used to my new camera and the same goes for the Old Home Place (if it is open, they have a quirky schedule). The Old Home Place for those of you who haven’t made it there yet is a 1860’s homestead with log cabins, out sheds, barns and what have you. During the summer they have interpretive staff doing farm stuff and they used to actually have oxen, which even having been raised on a farm I thought were HUGE. I have some images from there in my online gallery linked below. So, if you are planning on joining us bring your cameras! And if you are going to miss us, but are still thinking about visiting LBL, those the elk and bison prairie and the Old Home Place are must sees in my opinion.

According to the web site the Homeplace is supposed to be open March through November. It does not give hours of operation however.

The weather in Kentucky is warming up. Supposed to reach the mid 60's this week! If you are itching to get out in the Airstream consider joining us at the Land Between the Lakes Forum mini-rally.

The campground is pretty huge. Do we need to make reservations this time of year or can we show up? I think we're planning on coming down on Saturday morning.

From the good news-bad news department

The good news is that college I am wanting a job with has invited me out for a campus interview. The bad news is that I fly out of St Louis the monday morning following the rally. Between this and everything else going on (finishing the dissertation) it is begining to look doubtful as to if I will be able to make the rally . Hopefully as this week progresses something will break loose and I will be able to make it, but my optimism is waning........

Party pooper

We hate to be party poopers ourselves but we also will not be attending this coming weekend . We have a chance to take our grandson to the beach for a week during school break. Between school and every other weekend at his deadbeat dad's we don't get to see him that much so this is an opportunity that we can't pass up. Sorry for the change in plans, we were looking forward as we have not spent any time in LBL.

Ditto here. I was trying to coordinate things at work to enable this trip, but we're taking some new software live over that weekend so instead of camping at LBL I'll be hanging around a data center.

Guys if this thing falls apart I'd love to come on some other date. We've been down there many years ago, back in my tenting days and pop up camper days. We stayed at Piney campground so I'd love to go back to the area again. Unfortunately work prevents me for being there this time. It's not a bad drive from STL.

OK things are just NOT going to work for a Rally at this time. It is time to OFFICIALLY CANCEL IT. Maybe we can try again some other time. I really wanted to meet some of you in person and hope to still someday.

Lbl

Greg,
Like you, we would also like to meet other forum members besides visiting LBL for the first time. We could meet up the weekend of Mar 31 - Apr 2 if you'd like to give it another try. Being retired, we could go anytime of the week but I'm guessing more might be able to attend on a weekend. Let us know.
