A couple of people at the Moraine View rally expressed interest in caravanning to Louisiana, a beautiful state full of culture and history, and which we have visited many times. Throwing out a "feeler" to see who might be interested.
Tentative plans are:
a) early May 2010, after the big festivals down there but before it gets too hot and humid
b) 10 days total, two days down and two back, leaving on a Friday and returning on a Sunday
c) visiting the Natchitoches/Cane River area, Mississippi River/Plantation Road, a little Cajun Country and New Orleans/the French Quarter
There are nice and reasonably priced campgrounds and/or state parks in all of these areas.
Wonderful! We will get some dates firmed up here in the next few days (are on the road) and get them posted. Will then do a formal post for the trip, with specifics as we firm things up.
I'm already here! We live near New Orleans. Let me know when you will be down. Make sure the AC is working, it's hot right now. 97 deg. today. Better to come around Mardi Gras. It's a great show. We park our trailer at a fast food place on the parade route. (you have to ask the owners permission first) Great fun.
No, no---no Mardis Gras! However---we were thinking, if participants are interested, of inviting local Airstreamers to visit us at our campgrounds while we are down there.

Reason: typo
I can't speak for anyone else, but the main stopper for us would likely be the weather. With Mardi Gras being Feb 16 in 2010, the roads up here on that date usually are snow and/or ice covered and can be very hazardous in a car, much less towing a trailer. You might catch a break some years, but it would be hard to plan for.
Maybe some day when we can start out further South....

Would love to visit or help out when ya'll come. I'm in the North part of the state. Come on down! May is the best month. IMO.
Well, we are not at all interested in Mardi Gras, and we are not offering up to facilitate nice fellow Airstreamers visiting your beautiful state to go to Mardi Gras. Anyone who wants to do MG can fly, drive, train, walk, etc., another time. Not with us, no way. Would love to meet you, though, so watch this thread for further details.
The weather here is best around Feb or Mar. This year spring lasted until May. Now it's just boiling hot outside. Some years it's already hot in May. The rain is also unpredictable. This year we are having a dry spell but one year we had 80 inches of rain by this time. It generally stays hot until Oct. That's also when huricane season ends.
In Oct and Nov there are several food festivals around, so that's also a good time to come. Dec is the first month that is usually cool. Still, it's been 80 deg here on Christmas day.
Also, oysters are in season during the cool months.
As far as Madri Gras goes, I'm not really a big fan but it is someting to see. We go out to Veterans Highway in Metairie were it is a very family friendly event. The drunks, flashers and freaks are all in the French Quarter. What you've seen on TV and movies is mostly bunk.
Then there is tha Jazz Fest April 23 of 2010. This is a good event with lots of food and live music. This is also about the end of weather that can be called nice. April might be a good time to plan for.
We appreciate the info, but are not able to go again this year. We all need time to plan for that length of trip. Looking toward early May of 2010, and hoping to be able to meet you and others while we are there.
