Backing up the dates to April 30th would drop the average high temperature by two degrees. That's fine with me. Either set of dates work with my calendar.

The heat potential issue was my thought, although it could be mid-80's the end of April, too, we'll just have to brace ourselves for the possibility. When we hear from maccamper, will firm up dates.

Either date range works

Either of the date ranges works for us. We do plan to be in Springfield, MO in mid April for the Rock N Ribs BBQ Festival. We can work our itinerary so we are back in Bloomington in time to re-stock and be ready for an Apr 30 departure to NOLA (or a May 7 departure).

Great! We are then leaning toward the earlier dates. April 30-May 9, 2010 it is. (God willing and the creek don't rise, as they say.)

We will be going south again mid-January, so will not try to firm a lot up until we can make some on-site visits to a few places.

Janet suggested putting this on the rally calendar, which we will do asap. Please feel free to pm at any time with input and suggestions.

Yeaaaaaayyy!! It's going to be a great trip!!

All you shrimp lovers, be sure to save some freezer space and bring ziploc freezer bags for the abundant, cheap, fresh shrimp down there.

We have a rally ad up, which is very cool. Thank you, Janet!

We would like to begin in early January firming up plans for this roadtrip, and will be back in touch about this time next month. Everyone have a wonderful holiday season!

__________________________________________________ __________

We are leaving the bitter cold of Illinois on January 10th, to meander the South and Southeast for a couple of months. First on our agenda is to firm up en route and Louisiana camping locations for this trip, and we will update the itinerary accordingly.

We boondocked on the Cane River in Natchitoches last spring, in the paved, beautifully landscaped river walk area. We are going to speak with local officials about permission to do this for multiple sites, as this area is charming, right in the historic downtown, close to historic sites, restaurants, shopping, etc. If this is not possible, we will scout out a similar, alternative area.

The campground tentatively selected for Cajun country is "adults only". We need to know asap if anyone is planning on bringing children, so that we can look elsewhere.

We decided on the French Quarter RV Resort in New Orleans for May 6 & 7. It is a bit pricey, but very nice, secure and allows easy access to all things NOLA.

Steve (TinLoaf) has agreed to assist with posting a route map.

Everyone will be responsible for their own campground reservations.

Please RSVP.

Suggestions welcome!

***Good Sam Park

Wow. I just found this. Andrea has been talking about wanting to go to New Orleans / the deep south. We do have two small kids (would be age 2 and almost 4 at the time of this caravan / trip) so if we can make it, the adult-only campground might have to be revised, but don't change it yet. I need to have Andrea look over this and give her approval. I'd need about 1.5 weeks off of work to allow for travel (we'd be coming from north central Ohio) so we might have to re-arrange other planned camping trips. Would be encouraging to know if other people with young kids were coming. I doubt any school-age kids will be there due to the timing. We'll keep this thread posted as to our status, but for now don't re-plan any campgrounds.

We'd love to have you come along, if you can make it.

The Lafayette area has many campgrounds, so a change should be no problem at all.

There's a very nice city park in Abbeville, La. on Camping ground road. Has WiFi and full hookups about $20 night.

Wearable, Useable Rally Art!

Our very own Magnificent Michael (ArtStream) has agreed to create a special piece of artwork for T-shirts, Tote Bags and aprons for this Roadtrip & Rally.

I was thinking of an outline of the state of Louisiana, with our route, stops and appropriate images within it. Hmmm?

Suggestions welcome.

Meeting place in Southern Illinois

The itinerary is sounding like a great trip. We're excited.

Whittington Woods Campground by Benton, Ill would be a great place to meet and stay the night of April 29th before heading on south to Louisiana. The owners (Reed and Mary) are nice folks and I'm sure would be willing to work with our group. They are easy to get to from Interstate 57 yet far enough away that road noise isn't a huge issue. They have a great pavilion and campfire site. If you look at the photo gallery on their web site, you may recognize a few Airstreams and Airstream folks from an AirForums rally soldiermedic hosted at Whittington Woods last May.

As much fun as this sounds, we've looked over the route and destinations and as of right now we don't think it's the best idea to do at this point in time given the conditions of our family and other camping plans. Things could change between now and then, but for now don't plan on us being there.

We live in Lake Charles, La. but both my wife and I were raised in the Natchitoches area. Natchitoches is a great place to visit. It is the oldest French settlement of the Lousisiana Purchase and has a lot of beauty and history. Might I suggest you consider Grand Bayou Resort (www.grandbayouresort.com), outside of Coushatta as a place to camp. It has 30/50 amp service and a very nice lake. The drive to Nat. is only about 25 miles and you would want to be sure to stop at Grayson's BBQ on your way. I will be off during your time period and would be very interested in meeting you all!! Take care...steve

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve & Mary. We'll take a look at that, and would love to have you come visit us when we're down there.

Look forward to meeting you!

I'm thinking we perhaps need a couple of potlucks on this trip, which are traditional Rally activities.

The best days for these might be the second of the 2-night stays in Plantation Country and Cajun Country---and to which we can invite nearby Airstreamers to participate in and maybe camp a night with us. Both are fairly central locations in Louisiana. There are a number of Forum members in southern Mississippi and Louisiana, some of whom have posted here or PM'd regarding this trip.

It would be fun to meet as many fellow travelers as possible.

Thoughts??

P.S. Confirmed travelers, please remember to RSVP on the Rally page thingy, so that anyone who clicks on it knows who is going without having to read through this thread.

Thanks.

Hey y'all,

We're heading south as I write, and will have the rest of the details for this trip firmed up within a week or so.

As there are no "nay's" for potlucks, let's tentatively plan one for dinner on May 3rd and another for May 5th---to which we will invite any nearby Forums friends to visit and participate in. We could include an evening open house in these, as well.

Watch the evolving Itinerary, above, for updates.

Itinerary update

Greetings from Arkansas!

We have selected Fair Park RV Park in Hope, Arkansas, for our first nights' stop. It is about an 8 hour drive there from Mt. Vernon, Illinois, leaving about 3 1/2 hours on to Natchitoches the next day.

The park is clean, neat, has 300 sites, W/E, showers, dump, a nice playground and plenty of running area for pets. We are advised no reservations are taken and, as no events are planned at that time, there will be plenty of space for our group on April 30th.

Maggie
