Best route from Boone, NC area?
This trip will be my first time "serious downhill". We will be at Alumalina in September, then in the Fleetwood/Boone area until heading for Falluminum in October. Mapquest is recommending 421 to Wilkesboro (some serious grades coming down from BRP) and then over to Morganton. Alternate route is 221 from Boone down, but I have driven that and it is pretty twisty. Any local knowledge?
Thanks,
Al

After looking at Google Maps, I recall that the bad part of 221 was going into Blowing Rock and the suggested route out of Boone is 105 which is fine. The only potential worrisome spots look like the Black Mountain grade on I-40 near Asheville which I think is uphill westbound and US 64 south and west of Franklin. Anyone have any information on 64?
Thanks,
Al

I have driven the route in from Franklin (64) is very nice 2 lane road with long grades. You will be downshifting, but not worried so much about curves. 175 / 75 from 64 to Hiawassee is a narrow 2 lane road, but not bad. There is a one lane bridge, but there is little traffic and good sight distance.

Well, I can't speak to the roads, but if you come through Franklin, NC you have the opportunity to visit one of our favorite restaurants - Cafe Rel. This is really a fabulous restaurant, so don't be discouraged because it is located in a busy gas station. Yes, gas station. Cash only, no reservations - think "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld. Stand in line quietly, do as the owner says; he is watching you. You are likely to wait in line, because everyone knows this is a rare "find"; worth it. Bon appetite!
PS: Did I mention the crab bisque??

Oh, and 64 west of Franklin into Hiawassee is no problem, just a bit steep but not bad at all.
If you need a place to stay between Franklin and Hiawassee (after a big rich meal at Cafe Rel) choose Standing Indian Campground, which is in the Nantahala Forest and a really great (boon docking) campground with some gorgeous hikes.

I agree. I chose F10 to be near the pavilion, but I know some people like the views from the hill, and some people like access to the water.
Here is the map, and a link to that: Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds: Hiawassee, Georgia: Country Music Capital of Georgia
From the website (emphasis is mine): "
Campgrounds
Scattered throughout the fairgrounds are 189 camping and RV sites that offer modern conveniences such as water, electricity, telephone and cable service. There are 92 sites in the first area and 97 paved sites, open year-round, in the second area. Most sites offer beautiful views of Lake Chatuge, and campers can take advantage of the fairgrounds’ many amenities including two playgrounds, a boat ramp, two tennis courts, paved playing courts, shaded picnic tables and the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens. Reservations can be made by calling (706) 896-4191."

For those considering attending
You'll want Area Two. If you want to be surrounded by Airstreams, select section A. It is a longer walk to the pavilion and there is limited parking at the pavilion for the few who bring instruments, cooking gear, or lots of prepared dishes, but it is not really far away. Section A is forested and on a hill so no fires allowed. However, it is easy to drift from site to site, extending your friendship ring, and seeing all the units during open house.
Sections B & C are waterside, tucked really close to one another, and will be mostly non-affiliated campers with an assortment of rigs from pop-ups to motorhomes. Those sites, as well as D, E & F, allow fires. D, E, & F are on a knob with some trees, close to the pavilion, and will have a mix of rig types but you will be surrounded on all sides by camp sites.
Join us wherever and look forward to a terrific weekend.

That is very good to know. We got A 26, so being first timers we can get to know everyone.

Reservations can be made by calling (706) 896-4191. Only the campground can reply about availability. They do try to hold back section A as long as possible.
