I can see where it would be difficult to get a bunch of sites together at a desirable state park in the middle of the summer. A group camp site might just be best- everybody would be together and the cost would be less, I am sure. A phone call to the campground should be able to answer some questions. Just my .02 worth.

Taking the Bull by the Horns

Executive Decision had to be made. I hope everyone will jump on board with camping at the campground that Wheel Interested suggested earlier, the Michigan State Wilderness Campground. The suggestion of working the rally backwards from Mackinac Island to Petoskey is brilliant for the simple reason: we can then utilize the brand new Straights State Harbor to park our private Yacht (using the term loosely) (my son's 30' Boston Whaler) and get to Mackinac Island and back twice a day on Friday and Saturday if there are enough interested folks. This would reduce the cost of fuel dramatically and make it affordable for all.

So here's the deal: I've been on the phone with Burr Mitchell, supervisor of the park. He said that the sites on the lakefront do not have paved pads and the roads are in bad shape. He said the sites in the Pines Campground section are paved and have a newer bathhouse. He said they are roomier and would accommodate our larger size trailers. He said the outside loop in the Pines is the way to go and I asked him directly, "You know this campground and if you were hosting a rally, what are the best sites you would pick?" He said Pines, outside loop.

Now here's the best news: He is giving me three days to take exact reservations from all of us. There may be a bunch of us who prefer the lakeside sites and a bunch of us who want to go with the Pines. I'm going with the Pines. We can set up two sections of Airstreams or all go in the Pines. Either way, you can get what you want and he'll let us book early via the phone. He will call me on Friday, January 27 and if I can get a list of confirmations...he will pull the sites off the internet and mark them booked and will let me book the group early, before the 6 months is up.

Please go to the campground, look at the sites, and send me your prefences for the following:

1. Pines Campground or Lakeside
2. Size of Trailer
3. Day of Arrival
4. Day of Departure

I said I would contact everyone and I'm hoping this is agreeable to you. We can still drive south through the Tunnel of Trees, down to the vineyard and the beautiful town of Petoskey. We can ride horses on Mackinac Island. We can visit the Grand Hotel there and rent or ride bikes around the island (mostly downhill loop with the famous "arch rock") The Governor's mansion is there too. We can visit the historic forts there and see lighthouses, too. We can still do everything we want like salmon fishing and boat rides.

Thank you Wheel Interested for your super great suggestion.

Now, everybody, lets get that information in to me either on the forum here or feel free to call me on my cell at 810.241.4224. I prefer the forum, so we have it in writing. If they charge me for the sites, I will pay and then let you know and you can send a check. That's fine.

Pure Michigan awaits....

Thanks everybody for your calls and personal notes...keep 'em coming. I'm going to be arriving in "The HenHouse" 16' Bambi on Wed, Aug 1 and departing Sunday, Aug. 5. Pines area. Already have a couple of takers on the salmon fishing charter.

Also reserving a camp site for "Big Nasty", our Peterbilt tractor, with sleeper cab, that my son is using to haul the 30' Boston Whaler up north. Let's all rally around Adam and the Nast for being a good sport and taking us all on Lake Michigan joy rides. He will be anchored at the Straits State Harbor, right there at the tip of the mitten.

Mellen60,

Here's our information:

Pines loop
29 feet
Arrive Tuesday July 31, departing on Sunday August 5th (5 nights)

Danielle and I are definitely interested in the Mackinac Island trip and the salmon fishing sounds fun if we can just ride on the boat. I'll give up my seat to others if they actually want to do some fishing.

Looking at Google Earth the outside loop definitely looks like it has more trees. Sites 179 counter-clockwise to 216 look very good on the satellite image. Go with the rangers' suggestion on site numbers - I'm sure they'll give you good information.

Looking forward to seeing some of you for the first time and renewing acquaintances with others.

Lucius

We are going to be in Mich and we would put this on our calender for sure.
I think that there is another large RV park in the Traverse City area if the State park is a problem.
