I think that's a great idea Steve. That way if we want to do an all day trip on Friday, we don't need to worry about getting back for dinner, especially the pasties dinner!

Didn't you pay Kelly directly? Hopefully you canceled with Kelly and not directly with the campground so we can book another Airstream in your site.

Hopefully we have Roger & Alice's site available for you. If not, you can call the campground directly and start a new reservation. Hold off on that for a bit until Kelly answers.

I only know about half the people coming and unfortunately I don't know of anyone with kids. Your boys may not have anyone to play with around the campground, but they'd enjoy the ferry to Mackinac Island, the horses, bikes, etc. You should come.

Telescope Viewing...

We'll definitely put the telescope up for the full moon on Wednesday and one other night. We're hoping to do a day trip to UP, so whatever day that is, we're not sure when we will get back.

I'm hoping we can put it out near that point in the land that sticks out a bit in the photo near where we'll be camping. It will need to be a bit away from the campfire, as the smoke is not good for the lense and eye pieces.

We'll be going one night to the International Dark Sky Park as it's a special place with really dark sky. It's on the other side of Mackinaw City, so not too far away. Dark Sky Park - Emmet County, Michigan Dark sky is really hard to find when you live in the city...

Let's hope for clear nights without clouds and let's hope for solar flairs - that makes for a great show with the aurora borealis.

Reservations, Challenges & Hints

Alozier!! You would be our first INTERNATIONAL attendee. Welcome and we'd love to learn more about great spots to see in Canada.
Here's what I would recommend you and any others who are able to come to this rally should do to get a reservation:
Please contact Sandy at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground directly. She has been wonderful at getting us all together. I'm sure the canceled site is sitting there just waiting for you. Sandy can be reached at 1-(231) 436-5584. Let us all know how you make out.

Here's some random helpful hint for those going to the sand dunes: Add this item to your beach bag: baby powder--it gets sand off your skin easily, who knew? Freeze Aloe Vera in ice cube trays for soothing sunburn relief. You can bag the frozen cubes in a ziploc and use as needed.

Here's a random trailer toiletries storage hint:
Velcro a magnetic strip behind the bathroom door or on a wall to store bobby pins, tweezers, small scissors, and clippers. This also works great for office supplies like paperclips and rubber bands when you put them in those little round containers.
T I N L O A F C H A L L E N G E --
Find a count down clock to post on the forum thread so we can tick tock the days down!

Your kids are the perfect age to take biking around the island. They have tandem bikes for rent where a parent rides front and the child rides or pedals in the rear. We did it with our kids when they were as little as 3 years old and IT WAS A MEMORY MAKER. Forget the two hour buffet with the little ones, come and ride bikes. The island bike loop is mostly downhill, so you coast the 9 miles (don't quote me) around. There is a lot to do with kids there...like horseback riding.

Most of us will be on the island on Friday and we can meet up for the carriage ride or the pink pony (kid friendly) later on. By all means, if the Grand Buffet is your thing, don't let me talk you out of it. I would call the hotel directly to find out what the child rate is.

There are little caves, beaches, rocks to collect, and, of course, Arch Rock to capture breathtaking family pictures. Here's some of my old pictures 1990's to present on Mackinac Island! Let's hear from others who are bringing smaller children or grandchildren.

Tina,

You nailed the spot where the telescope set up was described by Sandy to me: out near that point in the land that sticks out a bit, near where we'll be camping. There are so, so many stars visible up in the northern sky. How lucky it is that there will be a full moon, too! We will feel like we are on another planet. I can't wait to see all the craters and the man in the moon. Let us know what day you want to set up at Dark Sky Park and we can get that on the calendar.

BTW, folks...Tina did the "Exploring Under the Bridge" graphic design for us and is producing stickers for everyone at the rally. THANK YOU, TINA.

I love how we Airstreamers get together and pitch in one for all and all for one. Okay, it's late and I've had my nightcap. Time to reel it in and hit the hay.

Goodnight, John-Boy

My wife and I have been to the island and the surrounding area before (pre-kids). One of the attractive things for us is to head up to Sault Ste Marie and get some fresh whitefish for lunch or dinner.

We travel already with bikes, although the older kid still struggles on hills since he's not yet big enough for a bike with multiple speeds. The little one still uses a kid seat on my bike for longer rides. I'm not sure if we'd take the bikes over to the island or not, but it's attractive at $8/bike.

Please, others coming with kids / grandchildren chime in. Kelly makes good points of things to do with kids but these are things that we can do with our kids anytime in the area. The draw of a rally is that there is 1) other Airstreams and 2) hopefully other kids to occupy our kids so that mom & dad can socialize with other Airstreamers. We're not newbies to rallying and we know from experience that the more there is of 2), the better time the whole family has at a rally.

It is my understanding that the more formal attire (coats for men and dresses for women) is requierd after 6:00 p.m. Lunch buffet is casual; otherwise we would not be going!

I went ahead and contacted the campground. They are holding Mcair's LAKESIDE spot open for the first caller who wants it. It is $40 per night from 8/1-8/5 for a total of $160. Just call Sandy at Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground and tell her you want the Mcair spot. Hope to see you there!
