First time Canopenians

There are a number of you who are first time rally attendees. Sometimes new rally attendees ask what they are supposed to do during the rally. Other than choosing what events to participate in, the answer is just to walk around and talk to people. Of course, normal tourist activities are abundant in the area, but making friends and comparing Airstream notes seems to be the predominate activity. If you see a campfire going one evening, just crash the party. The fun factor is up to you!

Check out the beaches. The beaches of northwest Florida are absolutely beautiful, with sugar white sand and clear water. A lot of people visit the beach in Topsail Hill Preserve State Park (the state of Florida bought this beachfront tract to preserve it forever). From the campground, the beach is 3/4 of a mile away, so you might want to ride a bicycle (nice bike paths) or take the park's free tram.

Other than the beaches, Google Destin or San Destin for information on the area. There's a lot, I mean a lot, of shopping - you name the store, they probably have it.

Another thing to explore is the community of Seaside. It's about 30 minutes east of the campground and is a picturesque seaside town. The movie, The Truman Show with Jim Carrey, was filmed there. There are 5-6 Airstreams in the center of Seaside that are little restaurants.

More Info for Potlucks

1. Please label your food dish. We have people who are allergic to certain foods, so labeling can be very important. Plus, sometimes it's hard to determine exactly what the food dish is when the table is full of other food items.
2. Bring your own plates and eating utensils to the dinner and breakfast potlucks. These items (plus bowls) are provided for the chili potluck.
3. Bring your own drinks. There will be coffee and juices at the breakfast potluck.
4. Bring your own chair to the dinner potluck. We have a number of tables coming but if you have an extra one, please bring it. The other potlucks are in the clubhouse where sufficient tables and chairs are available.

Free Bicycle repair/adjustments

Hey all,

Since Luckyducks mentioned bicycles and HowieE offered his services teaching Geocaching I thought I would offer my services as well. I would love to offer free bicycle repairs/adjustments for anyone bringing a bicycle to the rally. If you have a bike that has a flat tire, squeaks, needs a brake or deraileur adjusted I would be HAPPY to provide a little assitance. I've got tools and some spare parts so please just stop by site #47 between 9-noon on Saturday for a little TLC.

Just over a year ago I retired from the bicycle industry after 40 years and I'm feeling the itch to sling some wrenches. So many people have given many hours putting this rally together it's my little way of giving back.

See you soon!

Jay

Jay,

Thanks for the offer - may take you up on that! We brought our bikes and our kayaks so if folks are interested in kayaking at some point perhaps we can do some paddling.

We just arrived at Topsail. If you plan on getting here after 5p CT, call ahead or you may not get in. Don't ask me how I know that.

Nilesrob and PharmGeek,

Yes, please do bring your bikes over even for a quick check over. Bikes that have been sitting for a couple years usually just need the tires aired, a little oil on the chain and likely a couple minor adjustments! Just my speciality.

Also, it would be a great way for me to meet you two. I've enjoyed reading your posts this past year as we learn all about our beautiful Airstream!

Anyone else that would like a quick check of their bicycle please stop on by site #47.

I noticed that breakfast starts at 9:00 so I think I'll adjust the free bike adjustments time to 10:00-1:00 on Saturday.

Jay

I will print the name tags later today so if you have any changes, please post them now. And to reiterate what Russ said about the name tag holders, if you have one left over from prior rallys, please bring it with you. With 220+ people, I'm about to run out.

And now for something more fun. It looks like the weather will be good for the Cornhole Tournament so Pat and I plan to open Margaritaville again around noon at site 154. Don't expect much as these aren't made from scratch lilke Annette's Bloody Marys and we don't serve snacks. But, they are good enough to make the highly competitve sport of Cornhole tolerable to those that aren't playing!! We close when the crowd stops coming in (or when we run out of Tequilla).

Jay, you'll have another customer - me! My wife's bike is making a clicking sound and I'm not sure if it's the bike or her. I'll start with the bike. And thanks for your generosity. Russ
