About 3-4 years ago, we camped near Auburn, AL on our way to Topsail and the temperature was around 16 degrees F. Now, this was a bit extreme, but none the less it does happen. (I remember it well because our tank went out and I had to go outside to change tanks at about 3 am - brrrr). I would resist de-winterizing until you get down to FL myself, unless the weather conditions seem otherwise.

That night was a cold experience for us as well, since we tripped the breaker overnight and didn't realize it till the next morning. There was frost on the door lock... on the inside of the trailer.

We were in that "RV Park" off US-29 that must be used for redneck reunions on football weekends. Arrived after dark. Parked where we were told. Awoke to cows in plain sight. We were in the pasture, too.

We remained winterized as well.

Probably not de-winterizing till Fla. But will carry about 10 gallons of fresh water in back seat of TV. Sal.

Air Cruiser - Vassar is about 120 miles North of Toledo. It made sense to me to not de-winterize until Florida and now many of you have confirmed that it the smart way to go - thanks.

I agree. They were a hit at Beachstream and the CanOpener. Don't change a thing (might want to make up 5 gallons at a time though)

I do have some questions about dewinterizing at Top Sail:

1) I guess they have no problem if we dewinterize there? (It's safe for their septic system since the RV "stuff" is based on beets?)

2) I forgot to ask them when we were there in May, does anyone know if the campground's water is chlorinated?

3) If it's not chlorinated, should we take some with us and do an overnight chlorination there? Just wondering, because when we dewinterized at home, we used chlorine to sanitize the lines.

Thanks.

Deb

Ouch. To some of us here, that is a hurtful shot. However, I must say, anyone who willfully overnights in a cow pasture must have felt right at home with the rest of us rednecks!

I was hoping to get through one CanOpener thread without seeing that phrase.

We are in - as far as I can tell, we have not made the reservation but should be there this year. It will be good to see everyone again.

Same here, Brad.

For anyone who might need an overnight option in the Auburn, AL (aka, "the loveliest villiage on the Plains") area on their way to the CANOPENER or wishes to join a few of us for the aforementioned weekly redneck reunions, consider this:

RV Parks|Auburn AL|Campgrounds and RV Parks|Deluxe RV Park|RV Resort

See Mike, that's the definition of insanity - thinking there will be a different outcome with the same Airstreamers. Hoping you guys make it!!

Will there be an Open House? I love to see what other Airstreamers have done with their interiors, especially the vintage campers.

Bettye,

Yes there will be an Open House. Chief will be putting out a schedule of events in the next of couple of months as things firm up. As an indication of probable events, here are some of the activities we had at the last Canopener: dinner outing (a ritual for many Canopener attendees is the Red Bar restaurant in Grayton Beach), pancake breakfast with the ranger, trailer open house, dinner potluck followed by a raffle and entertainment, breakfast potluck, and numerous happy hours. Many attendees also made their way to the beach sometime during their stay. It's absolutely beautiful with sugar white sand and clear water.

Note for you first time Canopener attendees - any campfires have to be in a raised fire pit that you bring. The campground doesn't have fire rings on the ground.
