Please mark us down for Potluck: Bodacious Broccoli Salad & Pitcher of Margaritas. (Assume it's OK to bring alcohol to Clubhouse.) We have to leave early Sunday, so will miss the breakfast.

well openers, it's about 6 weeks out 2 this gig.

while most of the sites in the back loop (rodeo drive) are taken,

the park has >150 sites and they are ALL nice...

they are also all close to the action and many are closer to the club house, lake or beach trail...

here is the basic park map (although recent improvements aren't on it)

Name:	Topsail.jpg
Views:	103
Size:	966.9 KB
ID:	116225

this is the 5th time 4 this rally, and that's pretty cool.

over the last 5 years about 200 trailers from 20 states and 2 provinces have gathered on the gulf.

it's a good thing and devo and the elfs who help (u know who u R) do a fine job.

everyone should take a look at the thread from 07 or year 1...

it's only bout 1700 posts long, but worth the time 2view.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...lly-27292.html

-it only took about 30 posts to nail down the dates and location.

-it was another 100 or so posts before NAMING the event was mentioned...

and then, basically the FIRST suggestion was the best, and stuck.

then over the next 1000 or so posts folks got acquainted and the planning happened very organically...

meals, road trips, music, campfires, movies displayed outdoors, tours, door prizes and so on...

of course the pics don't tell the full story, but are fun to see.

that 07 thread is a great read for anyone THINKING about having a free/easy/fun rally...
________

08 is good too and has a BUNCH of photos and humor.

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...lly-35478.html

seems there was a nest of pigmy rattlers in one of the sites and the occupants had to evacuate?

very funny.

09 is also a good read.
_____________

last year, i read here, it was cold there...

my belief is all that POSTING about T shirts (last year) ticked off the weather gods.

so instead folks should post about wearing PARKAs or commemorative mukluks or can opener long johns...

this will please the weather gods who will then HEAT the place up.

_________

past years have included polishing demos, dent PULL'n, plumbing fix'n and flamingo pajama shows...

while there is a saturday potluck and sunday morning breakfast, that's only a tiny bit of the POTENTIAL stuff 2 do...

the scenic/A30 emerald coast area is loaded with good times....

-100s of miles of bike trails

-fresh or salt water for kayakin' or canoe'n...

-cute little towns for tourist'n (grayton, water color, seaside, seacrest, sunntyside, laguna, sea whatever...)

and the outlet malls n shopping nite life of destin...

and all within 30 miles of topsail.

30-A.COM > Explore & Discover > Interactive Maps

some go to the redbar friday nite,

but stinkys seafood shack is also GREAT eating and less than a mile from topsail.

in past years there have been happy hour things hosted by m'mate and others, multiple small group fires and gator wrestl'n...

the point is, there is a LOT of potential good times 2 be had...
____________

and if that's not enuf, topsail is by FAR one of the nicest parks on the planet.

4 point hook ups (cable tv at a state park), paved GIANT rv slots, asphalt inner roads...

and the staff SWEEPS the pine needles from each site twice a week.

private access to the white sand beaches (tram, walk, bike) and hiking trails to the coastal lakes

it's really an amazing park.
____________

so defrost the stream and head to da'beAch...

get yer gator on and pop open some cans...

add a few daze to the week end reservation, it's gonna be HOT this year...

and a BIG thanks to devo' and the elfs (or is it elves) for 5 years of fine times in the sand/cans...

cheers

Last year was obviously unseasonably cold.
But, what was the best weather we have had over the last 5 years?

If I were to place a bet, what is considered normal for Top Sail in early January.

mid 60s days, 40s nites are typical january temps.

there are also warmer days often into the 70s,

but many times warmer brings rain.

rain is good stuff!
_______

looking back now, the "20 states" estimate is off.

30 or more states have been represented at this event.

counting kids, grand parents, and mates >1000 folks have opened these cans.

no need to be N a club or belong to any group.

while streams from the 50s to new have been present,

so 2 have NONstreams, including folks sleeping in vans/suvs.

there are fully equipped cabins 4 rent too, and folks have used them.

cheers

If there is a nest of pigmy rattlesnakes on site #126 in '10, I'm afraid I'll just have to evacuate (or be evacuated) back to Birmingham. Maybe I could get Greg to drop off the AS on his way back home.

The Red Bar is top shelf. Just be sure to bring cash, as they do not accept cc's.

Canopener Update

We had the pleasure of visiting/dining with the Roadtoaster’s crew at Topsail this weekend, and used the opportunity to solidify some Canopener stuff (reserving the Clubhouse for Fri-Sun, etc.). The following is a consolidation of Canopener times/activities along with some new information:

Friday/7 Jan (4:30 PM): For those who so desire, there will be a large contingent of folks dining at Red Bar. It is advisable to go early, as there is always a large weekend crowd (we couldn’t get in this past weekend and had to find an alternative). Remember that Red Bar does not take credit cards (cash only), and they do not split checks (if you’re at a big table, someone with math skills will be required).

Friday/7 Jan (7:00 PM) Clubhouse will be open for a happy hour, lie-telling, etc.

Saturday/8 Jan (9:00 AM): Pancake breakfast with “The Ranger” at the clubhouse….cost $4.00 per person. Nice way for Momma to avoid cooking breakfast, and receive an informative lecture on Topsail at the same time. A signup list will be posted separately.

Saturday/8 Jan (1:00 PM): Open House for those who wish to show their Airstreams. If you don’t want to participate….no problem. But, if you don’t mind letting us tour your unit, Luckyducks (Russ) will have copies of the Open House signs for you. You can get them Friday evening at the happy hour, or chase him down at site #119.

Saturday/8 Jan (6:00 PM): Potluck Dinner Time. Jenn and I will open the clubhouse at 5:00 for folks who need to use the cooking facilities, and a bit of pre-dinner happy hour (if you need the clubhouse earlier, let me know). I understand we now have a volunteer to oversee the raffle (geodude1958). So, if you want to participate in the raffle, bring a contribution……give something-receive something. I also believe we may have a bit of entertainment during the evening, but I will wait for the “entertainer” to reveal himself (and how much he wants to entertain).

Sunday/9 Jan (9:00 AM): Potluck Breakfast. Jenn and I will open the clubhouse at 8:00 for use of the cooking facilities and coffee prep (btw….anyone know how much coffee to put in one of those big coffee pots).

That’s about it for now. If you have questions, please ask this week as we plan to be cruising the Caribbean next week…..sans Airstream, of course.

Please don’t forget to add your name to the list for pancake breakfast with the Ranger, if you plan to attend.

Chief
