The date was set before the last one was completed in Jan. '08 with the majority in agreement. Devoman is the organizer of this rally and this is the weekend that he felt would be the least conflict for the most attendees. Ultimately, as organizer, it is his decision which weekend to have it.

I am not complaining about the date and not the least bit interested in changing it, I am disappointed that I will not attend due to my sons school schedule. What I am trying to find is others are in the same situation and are interested in attending the earlier weekend. Once we have a group we can open another thread. I truly hope you dont mind this slight inconvenience to help fellow forum members enjoy the fun of owning trailers.

News to me, I don't want to make waves.
But from the beginning I was always under the impression the the root of the meaning of the "Can Opener" was the beginning of the year as in first weekend.
Maybe there is a minority that would prefer the earlier weekend.
If so, great if not not.
But the school thing is an issue for some, and that weekend is kinda New Years week end.

history is fuzzy thing...
reading from post #1289 (and onward, about 20 posts) from last year...
i come away with a different impression entirely m'mate...

but history is fuzzy and decision making sometime vague.
the sand, sunsets, mild weather, local flavors and campground will be there both weekends...
and i'll guess that 'streamers will be there both weekends too...
opening cans, popping tops and enjoying each other.
how' bout the world LONGEST rally?
or a 'pre can NEW YEARS rally, rally thread' to ad to the mix?

Schedule
I have made my reservations for the 1-9-09 date. If I remember correctly, these dates were picked out because of complaints about the earlier schedule. There is no way everyone will be happy with what ever date is picked. If you can come - Hurray, if you can't and want to, it's a shame.
I,, for one want to give special thanks to Steve (and all event organizers) for all the time, stress, and effort it takes to put on a rally.
So if someone wants to organize a rally on a date more compatible with their personal schedule, do it, have fun, make new friends but do it independent of this scheduled event

I posted this but never had an answer?
Perhaps a new thread is in order not to disrupt this one.

Not to argue the point, but while the official date didn't hit the forums until post 1310, Steve had already made the decision on Saturday at the rally before the Tour of Homes began. I know a lot of us were hoping he would change the date, but the date became official after we got back. I made my reservation in February to make sure I got the site I wanted and to make sure no one beat me to it. Looks like I hurried for nothing since there are a lot of sites still available.
If there is a pre-rally rally, then that's great for those who can't make it the weekend of the 9-11. It will kind of takes the wind out of the sails for this one, but that is certainly everyone's prerogative.

Since I can't attend this one I had no wind in my sails, I felt the same way as you when I became aware of the later date. I see no difference you go when you can and enjoy as many as you can. I assume you may have many who will span both weekends. Enough said I hope to be back on schedule for the can opener next year.

i agree completely...
and continuing to not argue the point,
the quote i linked implies a "majority in agreement"...
my reference to last years thread, suggests lots of those posting were NOT in agreement.
i don't recall a formal vote and since this isn't the wb' we don't need no stinking votes!
it's devo's gig and he can set the date and has.
some cans come with stay fresh lids, so the can may be reopoened as needed...
and some jugs have multiple spouts for, ahhh, er, the same reason...
just b'ware of the 2 headed gators and fillamingos...
cheers

Linda and I are booked in site 156. Been booked since February - we're ready.
Steve, let me know if you need anything done or transported over from PCB. If Phil doesn't come this year, we will need someone else to bring lights for the potluck. Not that I have any, just something to keep in mind.
Chief and Roadtoaster, looking forward to having you as neighbors. Greg, I'll post a pic of my Rock Tamers soon - they work great.

We're planning on being there (at the CanOpener09)! I am hoping to play some music too, although more jamming, and less accompaniment. We'll be there Saturday late morning, and leave Tuesday (booked on site 146).
Carol, nice picture of the lilly-lined waterfront. For those folks who didn't look closely at your beautiful water scene, here is a portion of your photo:

Late to THIS party, too!!! OK, We're in.. Site 101. This is the 3rd time we've tried to make it. I am determined NOT to cancel this year! No one in the family is sick, and Julie's not pregnant, so I'm out of excuses! ha!
Here's the reason we weren't there last year. I think he was worth it!

Great - One of the argosy family - I was in 145 last year - and again this year. Let me think - Suburban - Kids - dogs - maybe a cat or two? I think the can opener was one of your first forum rallies. I'm pleased you will be my neighbor once again.
