altho... if any of you are traveling thru or near Montgomery, AL... consider stopping in The Woods RV park! thats where we're at right now.. we'd appreciate the company... we're the only AS there right now. the prices are good ($26 a night. less if you have Good Sam or Passport America.. slightly more if you want 50amp) for full hookups, close to 80 cable channels, and free WiFi... plus, you get to come check out our renovations!
hehehe
anyway... be safe everyone, and i DO hope to see you all next year

Passed through Montgomery on the way home from the Can Opener Rally. If I had known earlier where you were I would have stopped by. I ended up spending 2 nights at a Corps of Engineers Camp in GA.

We've stayed at The Woods RV Park several several times. It's sometimes right on our route to and from home. We met katzklaw on our last visit there a couple of months ago and got a tour of their vintage Airstream.
It's a very nice stopover CG. It is super convenient to the Interstate, has 5 point hookups, nice bathhouse, and there are several restaurants within an easy walk, including a Popeye's (my personal favorite). The price is right, and it is owned and operated by a very nice family that lives on the premisies.

My wife and I had a really good time going around and meeting several of y'all and checking out the various units Saturday PM. We wished we could have stayed for the entire rally and thank every one for the invitations to the potluck. I'm working on the camper getting it at where it won't leak anymore. Even though we live in the area, that was our first time at the park and it exceeded our expectations! We're planning on being there next year.
There's a pig roast rally at Mystic Springs park starting on Jan 17th, we'll be there until the 21st since schools out that Friday and Monday. If any of you want to come out it's just $9 a night for 3 point hook up and the meal costs are $10/person for the weekend, an unbeatable deal! Just call the camp and reserve by Tues. the 16th, the # is 850 256 3280. You don't have to be a WBCCI member to attend, just show up with an Airstream.
Moosetags, I saw where you parked at the Can Opener but you weren't around as we came by, sorry we missed you, hoping to meet you. Devoman, I appreciate the hospitality you shown towards us as well as all the others we met.

Glad you were there for the afternoon 68. We attended two or three North Georgia rallies before we even bought our Airstream and met some really nice folks. They continue to be our friends to this day. I am convinced that the camaraderie of camping builds bonds like no other past time.
Looking forward to seeing all the new friends we met at this rally, as well as the friends we made at past rallies, at future rallies. Looks like we will miss the Springstream rally this year, but hoping to make the '08 Falluminum. But, we will definitely see you all at the '09 Can Opener!

So I am going to ask the question on everyone's mind. When is the rally next year? Jan 1-4 or 8-11? Inquiring minds want to know?

I vote for 8 - 11. There will be less traffic on the highways, and less crowded overnight stops for those that need more than a day to get there.

Don't make me stir the pot and start a CanOpener '09 thread just to get the ball rolling. You know I will.
We really have no choice in which dates - just pick one soon so that we can all sign up - they fill up fast at Topsail. 60 trailers this year can be passed very easily next year, I hope so. It was great seeing all the silver there.

What are you waiting for, we then can set a date. The problem with 8-11 is the kids are back in school and that will cut out many campers including myself. The original early date for the Can Opener was so those with kids could make the rally which is always a problem with the WBCCI rallies. I have to verify what date school will resume next year. My guess is the 5th.

I think the weekend of Jan 1-4 would be better.
What a great way to ring in the new year... on the beach!

FYI - Reserve America accepts reservations for Florida State Parks up to 11 months in advance, starting at 8 am eastern time on the exact day you want to start your stay 11 months in advance. A date for this rally needs to be set so people can reserve a site in early February. Do we need a vote on the date? I'd like the earlier date (Jan 1-4) myself. New Years Eve in Topsail for the early arrivers could be another excuse for fun.

January 1-4 also has our vote. We had so much fun and met so many neat people, not to mention all the cool 'streams.

I think the first weekend in January is the best one.
1.Most schools have not started back yet.
2. It's a great way to start the new year
AND
3. Alan and Shannon can be there in '09!!! They have been wanting to attend for 2 years now!
So I vote for the first weekend in January!

Is it possible for someone to reserve a large block on the day they become available and then as forum folks sign on, they could be assigned? Maybe this is too gargantuan a job, but it would keep the silver together. Or, with the evidence of the past two Openers, would the park reserve a chunk of that section for our rally for a window of time to keep us together? ~G

well some of us are still opening the can...
i could post a daily sunset photo but hate to gloat
it's devoman's rally and he can pick the date...
that's how these forums things work.
IF ya can't do that date, start another rally!
folks will come.
also, imo the BEST RALLY threads are closed after the post rally pics go up.
that seals the deal for participants and posterity
there are some rally threads here that just go on as yak sessions...
boring!
and then finding the real details of the event is impossible.
otoh folks can still read closed threads, have you noticed that LAST YEARS can opener...
has more views than this years or any other rally thread?
that's cool!
silvercabins photos of devoman and devochild rolling east with a/s in tow...
was a picture perfect closing.
unless ya want some more sunsets pics on the beach...
cheers
2air'
block reservations don't work in the state park system,
beside there were dozens of changes this year BECAUSE folks booked so early
or DID NOT COME.
and lots of folks don't wanna be in a BLOCK.
while there is all this chatter about booking early and quick,
80%+ of the circle was still unbooked in september this year...
don't over organize kids, it's just camping

It's a State Park so they have reservation restrictions that do not allow block reservations - and it is pay up front so it would be costly for someone to hold a block for a while on the chance that a group will pay them back. Picking a date is a start, from there it's first come first serve. The park allows us use of a great pavillion/hall for the band and are very happy to see us there. They were very accomodating with last minute changes to campsites and cancelations.
