Milo,

Now that we all agree, and it turns out to be Burros, not Mules, let's here more about the area, for those folks who are considering a near Barstow experience. Milo, being the king of boondocking in California, lead on!

Tim,

I think Calico is also a great idea for a spring weekend getaway. If I remember correctly, some of the sites are really sketchy, not too level, and some are pretty nice, maybe someone with superior knowledge of the campground can chime in and lend a hand.

I've stayed in the campground. So see earlier post for my impressions.

John,

The 20 mule teams would head south into Barstow. A two day trip. They would stop over night near Calico in the same mountain range.

It's called Camp Rock and here are the directions.

Exit I 15 at Calico Road and head North.
Turn right onto Mule Canyon Drive. Re set your odometer to 0.
Go 1.5 miles and look for the flat area on your right.
The road is dirt but two wheel drive.

The Calico are is ripe with Mines, rail road beds, bldgs and all manner of mining and historical things. A great area to explore and see neat stuff.

A Jack is a male donkey and a jenny is a female donkey. A donkey is a domesticated ass. An ass is also called a donkey. A burro is a small donkey esp. when used as a pack animal. A jack crossed with a mare (a female hores) is a mule and is sterile. A hinny is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey.

Stuff no one needs to know.

Wow. That was extremely informative. Thank you Glenn.
Who says this is not an intellectual group?
You learn something new every day.

P. S. Could my sister-in-law be considered a hinny?
Just wondering...

Well I could not say anything about your sister-in-law as I have never met her but does she laugh like a donkey, you know like hee-haww? Actually I was referring to the breeding of donkeys to horses or horses to mules, that kind of thing and you being the Head Animal Wrangler and all. Right up your alley... Just thinkin!!!!!!!!!! Who is that masked man????

It's almost Boondockin time.

Hello fellow Cal Streamers!

Spring is fast approaching here in Cal. And as we all know Spring is the best time of year in our desert. Warm days and cool nights. Shorts during the day and a cozy campfire at night.

We'd camp at the end of a dirt road with no hookups. Just a stunning vista and under a kazillion stars.

Anybody game?

Thats the spirit. The spirit of adventure.

Don't worry. You're new baby will not even get a scratch.

He's not kidding. I've been with him. There's not a live bush or tree out there for miles. R

Pismo is great. Lots to do and a great place to do nothing also.

Do they allow campfires?
