I talked with Steven, yesterday, and he assigned me my space. I think the full hookups are all gone, but he said that I'd be near the group and happy with my spot.

Wherever they put you, you'll find us. We will be the shiny silver ones.

I know we are too late for this year, but, I am a newbie. My question (as dumb at it might sound) is: What is the road like out to Kernville from southern CA?

Route from Southern California

Take the 5 or 405 north to the 14 to the Kernville turnoff which is 178. Turn right on Sierra Way and then I think it is left on Kernville Road.....the road is much smoother than the 5, 99 and not so twisty.....It is a snap....paula

Has anyone approached from the east via 215/395? Our Garmin says to go that way since we are further inland - it is fewer miles - but we are not sure about the road between 395 and Lake Isabella. Anyone travel that road?

Might work OK, 395 hits 14 just a bit north of 178 that goes to Lake Isabella heading toward Kernville. As Paula said, 178 is a fine road, no worries. If your GPS says it is shorter, I would go with it, especially since you miss LA.

There is another road between 395 and 14

There is another road called Red Rock Randsburg Road that goes between 395 and the 14 (just south of Red Rock Canyon) that may be an option....not sure which one is shorter.....it seems to me that if I remember correctly, most of the 14 is 4 lanes and 395 is mostly 2 lanes.....Red Rock Randsburg is definitely a 2 lane road but it is mostly flat....there is a lot of RV'ing and ATV'ing in that area....sort of an interesting drive through the Mojave Desert through there. Either way should be fine.......paula

395/14 Rest Area

We were thinking of going up the 99 but the advice on taking the 14 is certainly welcome. A mere six miles north of the 178 turnoff is a very nice Rest Area, the Indian Wells Brewing Company. If the boss is asleep I will miss the 178 and stop at Indian Wells. Oops, sorry dear...

Perhaps someone who took Route 99 can chime in here......Kevin recommended that we take the 14 to the 178 and we were not disappointed with his advice. The 14 is a newer interstate and I suspect may be kinder to the trailers than the 99--paula

From Experience..... The Route from 99 to Kernville is a pain the the Behind! Never will I take it again ! The 14 to the 178 if your coming from the south is the BEST way to go. (that is, unless you like going through neighborhoods, traffic, and mountains with 18 wheelers coming at you down a narrow mountain pass!

ask Bamcamper

who came in from the west that way last time, apparently going east you are on the "cliff side" of the road and there are some overhangs that make it very tight. Of course she rolls a 16 footer so it takes up a little less room.

Towster, you can always take 58 over to the 14 in Mojave and then go up, I don't have a map in front of me but I think 395 hits after the lake isabella turn off.
