Burning Man 2015! Planning thread...

And off we go again!
Happy New year all.

Time to let the 2015 Playa Planning begin.

This year's event is: August 31 - September 7.
Location: Black Rock Desert, Nevada.

Every year our group of Airstreameri (as we are called) meet on the Playa and create a theme camp around our Airstreams. We offer up a variety of things to the community at large.

Anyone is welcome to join us and participation is a must.
There are no "camp fees" but each individual is required to buy their own ticket and vehicle pass. Tickets are not yet on sale but visit burningman.org for all the latest info.

The Burning Man Festival is not for everyone. If you have not attended before, read everything on the Burning Man site about the event and especially the preparation information. It is a boondocking, Leave No Trace event and you must pack in and pack out everything you need. You may also want to sign up for the newsletter, the Jackrabbit Speaks, (JRS) to get updates.

If you would like to join us, please do. Let us know here and jump on this thread to help with the planning.

We usually offer a small bar for the community that anyone can host, a post office for making post cards that we stamp and mail for people, rumor has it that there will be foot massages offered, and of course whatever else you would like to contribute.

Looking forward to another great year. Let the planning begin!
Cheers.

Wow, Bam has covered it all! Participate, clean up our trace, bring stamps, and lets go! I'm seeing reports that the playa was underwater so that's a good thing for playa conditions come August. Yeay team Airstreameri!

Hi Everyone !

We'll be there again and greatly looking forward to it. This year our plan is to have another art installation on the playa and burn it all up on the Friday - we will need help and participation ( in other words Fun!) for a complete success.

Count us in!

Heard of Burning Man, never been. Who supplies water, supplies, medical, toilet facilities, waste tank tank collections and cleanup after everyone leaves. Is the desert left as clean as it was before everyone showed up?

So excited! This will be my 6th year. I bought the AS specifically for the burn. Ive done 4 years in a yurt and my first in an RV. I've got 7+ months to finish the refresh.

KJRitchie- You need to bring your own food and water. There are porta-potties and there are medical facilities provided, if necessary. You must take everything out that you bring in. There is no trash collection. There is a crew that walks elbow to elbow the entire desert picking up the smallest piece of MOOP (matter out of place) after the event is over because not everyone cleans up like they should. The only thing you can purchase is ice and coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

One word Kelvin; YOUU do. You clean up the desert cleaner before you make camp, and clean it cleaner than when you got there before you leave. You bring everything you want, and you take it all away with you.
Our camp forgot to use a UV light on the ground before we set up last year, later the MOOP patrol found something from years past that we missed and there's not all green, there's a couple yellow marks on the map in our area that we didn't leave.

Hi, I'm Barbie.
I'll be on this thread playing the part of a past Airstreameri camper who will be camping down the street from you. I work with the Gate crew, camp with the Black Rock Rangers, and know someone who volunteers as a placer, so I'll try to answer any questions I can related to those volunteer groups.

Burning Man is an exercise in self-sufficiency and Leave No Trace. With that in mind, here are the answers to your questions:

Who supplies water?
You do. Bring all you need and pack all the waste water out. Nothing gets dumped on the playa.

Who supplies supplies? You do. Read and reread the Survival Guide. It's all in there. Think if everything you'd need to be comfortable. Now figure out how to get by with half of that, because you can't bring it all. As with water, pack it in, pack it out.

Who supplies medical? For the little stuff, you do. There are emergency medical facilities in Black Rock City. If you should happen to let yourself get so dehydrated as to need an IV bag, they'll hook you up, free of charge. If you should burn yourself on your art car exhaust, like my son did, they'll change your dressing daily. But try not to be that person. Care on the playa is, as far as I know, covered by your ticket, but transportation out of Black Rock City by ambulance or helicopter will cost a pretty penny.

Who supplies waste tank collections?
Most tanks won't make it for the whole week. Rather than have a stream of RV's going out the gate and back in mid week, Burning Man allows for porta potty service trucks to do business in Black Rock City. You have to flag one down if you see one driving by. Cash only. Ask the other Airstreameri how that worked last year.

Who does cleanup? You do. Everyone is responsible for leaving no trace. It's common to see someone stop their bicycle and pick up a bit of errant trash that might otherwise get blown across the desert. Each camp is held responsible for leaving their camp absolutely spotless - no oil drips, no glittery MOOP (Matter Out Of Place), not a trace. There is a crew that comes by afterward and checks every square foot of every camp and puts their findings on a MOOP Map.

Bad marks on the MOOP map can affect the camp's placement the following year, or result in the camp not getting placed at all. This is a big deal. A placed camp has a fixed address and a guaranteed area to camp in, plus early access for a few key camp people to facilitate getting later people parked and settled. Without that, everyone is part of the tens of thousands that come streaming in when the event opens and is left to find a space where they can, usually much farther away from the action.

Sorry to be so long winded. Burning Man is an exceptional event in so many ways and it often takes a lot of explaining to convey how different it is from the "default world."

Still looking for my rig, but as it is my Jubilee year I'm sure things will fall into place in time. Among my goals for the year is to make this year's burn. Time will tell if I succeed.

Gene and Sharol, love the pics, I am assuming your handle is Star ship Enterprise. Don't EVER grow up!
Take Sharol to this site and let her explore: Burning Man
Then go to this youtube link:
Then 'Make it so, engage'
We are shooting for 2016, but I love to lurk on the planning thread. Really hope to meet you there and have TOO MUCH FUN.
Peace and love,

I used to live in Reno and went to UNR and would hate to see the Black Rock get trashed. However, given human nature not everyone will comply with the strict cleanup so I'm glad to read there are volunteers and other participants that go the extra mile.

Is there a local sheriff presence at this event?

Kelvin, fear not, the cleanup is thorough. The Bureau of Land Management issues the permit to Burning Man and they come through and check after the event. The crew that checks for the MOOP map uses UV lights and magnetic rakes, in addition to eyes, to make sure everyone cleaned up after themselves. The future of the event depends on us restoring the playa. I've been to that desert in July, and you can't tell where the event was held.

Yes, there are sheriffs around during the event, from both Washoe and Pershing counties, plus BLM rangers, ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms), and any other Law Enforcement that feels it can justify a presence. Black Rock City has a population of over 68,000 residents for that one week. Its crime rate is far, far below the level of any comparably sized city. But people are still people and it's helpful to have people on hand who can take care of things quickly on site.

This also means that there are some, um, very enthusiastic law enforcement. Some officers volunteer to do Burning Man duty because they want to bust ravers and hippies. Others go because they love the fact that a city that big can be that peaceful and they enjoy the atmosphere there. It's a mix. So it's a wise idea not to exchange drugs with anyone you don't know well and not to leave your bong out in the open. Not all the law enforcement is in uniform.

Living with the Rangers and working with Gate, I've had direct interactions with both BLM rangers and sherrif's deputies. All my experiences have been positive. I'm glad they're there.

If you have not been to the event yourself,
don't believe everything you've heard about Burning Man.
Like all rumor and gossip and sound bites,
MOST of the stories are highly exaggerated or just aren't true.

Although there are some pretty good stories...

The Pershing county sheriff is blackmailing Burning man for a lot of money. He reports to the county commissioners that he is the only LEO out there and wants more money for more officers and more overtime. He neglects to mention the hundreds of volunteer peace keeping Black Rock rangers, the hundred paid BLM armed rangers, the paid Washoe County armed sheriffs, the paid Humboldt county sheriff.... Two years ago the LEO presence was stands of armed officers standing on Esplande next to the Black Rock Ranger station, waiting to arrest anyone. Not pretty sight. Last year they were there but not standing in threatening packs. A lot of your ticket money goes to pay for armed officers.

66,000 people partying with lots of drugs and booze, it becomes the third largest city in Nevada with only ticket sales to support the emergency services.

I think he is talking about a different event than the one our Airstreameri camp goes to. He left out the church meetings and the art and the world wide outreach "Burners with out Borders" and hundreds of other things. Yes, you can find anything you want, if you are looking for it. And, most of the emergency services are given voluntary, I don't believe there's much paid Doctors out there. My doctor helped out one year, he may have gotten a reduced ticket out of it.
