The Application is On

Hey Kids, what time is it? It's Burning Man theme camp application time! The applications are open, and the first question is a current camp plan. Ha ha ho ho hee. with an accurate number of camp mates, hee he he haw ho. . Then a description of our camp's "interactivity", and I'll need a LNT lead contact. Bam and Ron have worked extra over time on this for years now.
Plan on!

Hi Perry,

To assist in the camp promo you can certainly insert that the Camp is building and burning Arboreality; that Dr Foote and Mr Towes' Foot Massage clinic will be operational and that there will be laser lighting on our campsite each night. ( Robert and I are heading all this) We also intend to have a banner for Bams Bar and contribute to it as well.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much! This sounds great! We do have a banner that says Airstreameri, which we'll probably hang on the "community carport". Right now I haven't heard that any of our Best Playa Post Cards people have managed to acquire a ticket yet.

Just curious if the paperwork for the Airstreameri camp got submitted. This thread has been quieter than usual lately.

The deadline for placed camp applications is tomorrow at noon. Has anyone heard anything lately from NevadaGeo?

Your job, if you choose to accept it, is

Ok dusty friends, here's what I have conscripted each of you to do on the playa this year. Apparently the Placement Gods didn't reject the application for placed theme camp outright, cause they sent me back this, a copy of your conscription duties:
Thank you for submitting your Placement questionnaire.

Below you will find the information that you submitted in your questionnaire. You cannot make changes to this information once it has been submitted, but we can on your behalf. If you have changes or any questions, please contact us at placement@burningman.com.

Please note, you may see some questions listed in your notifier that you did not see on the questionnaire. Do not worry if that is the case, the notifier lists all questions, not just the ones for your project type. (oh good, I dind't see a lot of these questions before. hmmm)

Your BRC Placement Team will be sending out more information via the Placement Newsletter starting early May. You -- and the additional emails you submitted -- will be subscribed. If you do not receive your Placement Newsletter please check your spam filters first, then contact placement@burningman.com.

Happy planning!

It was Airstreameri and Geologists and Gynecologists two years ago with a Botanist show up. 2015 camp name may be just Airstreameri. One of our main geologists up and died on us last year a couple months before the burn. DMV hottie since 2008.

Interactivity Description
We plan on being most annoying with a dusty boring scientific talk with prerequizite multisyllabic language and arm waving and absurd theories about the origin of the Playa Itself, or maybe just ask questions for audience answers. Hopefully we'll have another Click and Clack performance by our resident Gynocologists, and sometimes we'll have a surprised scientist campmate with a few words. We do plan on having the Best Playa Post Card table again, the big City hit to keep the world misinformed on where we are. We definitely will be doing High Class Heckling of street passerby at our Street Art Installation. The day time is busy with the Post Card Construction station , the welcoming bar, foot massages and general bonhomie. We organize the camp so that the corner of the street we have occupied in the past is an open courtyard where people are welcome to drop in. All our camp members meet in this courtyard - rather than in hidden shady nooks - so there is always activity going on which induces others to join us. We will also have a placed arterie art headquartered in our camp, and applied to be burned!

Project Interactivity
Scheduled Events,Acculturation for First time Burners,Bar,Body Painting,Heckling,Lectures,Fire / Flame Art,Misting System,Performance

Number of Campmates
41 to 50

Acculturation
We require 5 questions from every camper out of the Survival Bulletin from all camp members before being placed in camp. We query passerby with same questions from the Survival Bulletin. And more Verbosity: We welcome and respect the stranger. All strays are included in our gatherings and potluck meals. Participation is valued and members interact and collaborate with neighbor camps. Generous gifting includes the postcard activity and gifts (generous adult beverage giveaways to support dance camp bars; traypass breakfast to neighborhood, etc). We demonstrate decommodification and radical self-reliance with the individualization and playa adaptivity of the branded product that brings us together. We are self contained and in a position to help others and be a resource for individuals with less hardy shelters. Communal Effort and Civic Responsibility
are supported by our well-attended playa talks. And our self contained trailers mean less impact to the portapotty system, and members are continually harangued to moop and are physically flogged by camp leadership if they Leave A Trace.

Physical Description
The Airstreameri is a self-contained camp of 22 Airstream camping trailers, from the 1950s up to this year’s models. The trailers and tow vehicles are arranged in two semicircles with a welcoming portal on the main street. Our portal is flanked by our highly popular (and public) Burners’ post card art activity and manikin-manned shade structure relaxation bar. Our only “structure” is an open-sided 14x24 tent canopy where the community gathers for meals and the annual “Playa Vicinity Geology and Ecology” lecture. Most of the Airstreams have roll-out awnings and they are parked in a way that allows for mutual shade and wind barrier support between pairs of trailers. This is a great aid for our 4 tent campers, since we provide pre-planned spots for them to nestle in among the Airstreams. The tow vehicles are parked between pairs of Airstreams on the non-awning side, which makes for a very compact camp. Each pair of Airstreams provides its own power from solar or small, quiet generators that are run only during the day. Other features of the camp are two gray water evaporation ponds, a required Moop container at each Airstream, a fire pit/burn barrel, and a physical arrangement that provides easy entry for large service vehicles (fire, water, sewage service). We start with a plan but remain flexible enough to accommodate being placed at a corner (preferred) or in the middle of a block. This flexibility has allowed the Airstreameri to welcome first time Airstream Burners (and other RV Burners as space permits) who obviously need some Acculturation. We are happy to provide! In addition to welcoming these strays into our camp, we encourage other Burners, through our open portal, to see how we use our Airstreams as self-contained boondocking environments throughout the year.

Leave No Trace is a cornerstone of the Burning Man ethos and one of our Ten Principles.
Practice the 5 R's: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Respect.,Reduce trash when packing.,Create a detailed strategy or plan for Leaving NO Trace

During Burning Man, our camp will:
Keep smelly garbage away from recyclables in BRC.,Clean As We Go and Keep It From Hitting the Ground.,Adopt the seven principles and practices of Leave No Trace at Burning Man.,Educate all camp members about minimizing our impact on the playa, so that my LNT crew can relax during the event knowing that all of our camp members are doing their part.,Conserve energy, use renewable energy sources and minimize waste.,Collect, reduce and properly dispose of grey water.,Use or creatively use discarded materials for all the components of our camp structure and decorations, so that our camp is sustainable year after year.

As we depart the playa, our camp will:
Bring tools to rake, magnetic rake, sweep and pick up every last nail and wood shard that dropped on the playa surface so that I leave my space and my surrounding spaces better than I found them,Follow the 'rule of thumb for line sweeps'- (hyperlink Leaving No Trace | Burning Man) – performing required multiple sweeps of our camp before leaving BRC. (One sweep is not enough. Do as many passes as necessary: the strength of the line sweep is in the number of people and passes.),Organize neighborhood MOOP sweeps. (Joining with neighboring camps and sweeping an entire block together is the best insurance against MOOP hot spots, bringing your own MOOP scores down.),Secure all vehicles' loads to prevent windblown trash on the highway and in neighboring communities.

That Thing In The Desert

Hi! My playa name is Emmo, and I camped with my friend Rick Roelke from New Hampshire in the BurnStream Court in 2004, 2006, and 2007. When I went in 2011, we parked nearby, but in 2013 we got to BRC late and had to park way out on the edge of the city.

If any of you were present back then, I am the guy who made up the Black Rock City GeoLocation Service, where we all looked like officials and went out and told people where things were, whether we knew or not.

So we are coming back home this year and would like to camp in BurnStream Court again, if possible. Given the years that have passed, I am sure that many things have changed; is there still an area "on the other side of the tracks" for a non-Airstream to camp? We just bought an '85 SunLiner 13' trailer which I am repairing and rebuilding now.

If there is no room for us in the official Burnstream Court, are there others who would want to try to camp near each other?

Thanks!
Emmo

Welcome where's elmo, but Monte took his Burnstream Court band back to Burnstream country 8:15 and Giddup or thereabouts. We're Burnstream Court Lite, or Airstreameri and WhatNot. Was Airstreameri and Geologists but one or our main geolopers upped and died on us last year, there went our Wednesday evening dusty scientific talks. Unless you can give us a couple hours of arm waving multisyllabic discourse on the present theory of the origin of the Great Basin, then double welcome. Be sure to bring some post card postage to gift to the Best Playa Post Cards in BRC.
You might ask Dr. Quark in our camp for our X and Y and Z this year, but the Placement Gods don't know it yet and they haven't told us either. We're generally around 3:00 and Waytfout There cause we're too rowdy to be let near the fine folks on Esplanade.
And nice double rainbow; test question: What's the term for the darker area always between the rainbows? Next, what color sequence does a triple rainbow have?

Placement announce no news #6

This came out a few days ago, still no news except does anyone want to write an exciting blurb to go into the WhoWhatWhenWhereforWhyisit directory? By the way, what are we doing this year? It's usually July when we hear if we're placed:::

:::::Placement Newsletter # 6 2015

In this issue:

1. Playa Event Directory
2. Theme Camp Web listing
3. City Plan is posted
4. SF Decompression

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Hello Citizens of Black Rock City!

Technology can be our friend and our foe. The long radio silence between Placement Newsletters was not intentional. Rather it was because of a behind the scenes issue that thankfully is now sorted. You may need adjust your email filters accordingly.

Besides this Newsletter, everything else in Placement land is great. We finished our second Mapping weekend on Sunday and the city looks amazing.

Three cheers to the volunteers who put all of the Placed Camps on the map and three cheers to all of you who pour your hearts and souls into your camps and the questionnaires we read to learn all about you.

After we pencil as many Theme Camps as we, we edit and move and adjust for another few weeks until we are ready to announce Placement in early July. Our team finds spots for over 1300 camps each year which includes Burning Man departments, work support camps, art support camps, mutant vehicle camps, and Theme Camps!

We will not be able to place every Theme Camp this year, but we are finding room for as many folks that demonstrate interactivity, neighbourliness, good MOOP scores and beautiful design as we can. As the size of your camp grows, we expect your interactivity to scale to your population. More people? More great reasons to stop at your camp!

If you have any changes or updates, please let us know quickly. We will do our best to accommodate any late additions.

Sincere apologies for the late notice about the opening of the playa events listing. I hope you are soothed by seeing your name in lights and by coming to a celebration in San Francisco!

All the best to each of you,

- Answergirl

PS - Want to write to us - email placement@burningman.org please put your 1st requested sector and camp name into the subject line for a faster response.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

1. The "When?" of the What? Where? When? Guide

Get ready to tell the world about your on playa events in 140 characters or less.

The listing opens Thursday June 18, 2014 @noon PT.

Whether you're showing a movie at your hand-built drive-in theater, holding a life-size whack-a-mole tournament, or hosting daily tantric yoga classes at your camp, be sure to add your event to the 2015 Playa Events
Registration, so people know when and where to find it!

Don't worry that you don't have your placed location, we'll take care of listing your address with your events.

The link to add your event to the 2015 Directory is PlayaEvents : Black Rock City

The on-line submission form and directory will be available through the Burning Man event, but only the events submitted before July 1st, 2015 – or the first 1500 received, whichever comes first – will also be included in the What? Where? When? guide, the printed playa events listing that's handed out at the Greeters' Station.

Where else do Playa Events appear? If you've marked your event to be public, it will be found in a variety of places:

The API (Application Programming Interface) for software developers to include in their mobile or PC applications.

The Directory computer system at Playa Info, where participants can add more events as well as browse them. If you add a password, you can edit your event on the Directory.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

2. Theme Camp Listing - see your name in lights!

Each year we publish a list of every camp requesting Placement and indicated it's okay to be publicly listed.

This is not a list of Placed camps - just those who completed a questionnaire.

If you indicated that you did NOT want to be "Publicly Listed" on your questionnaire, your camp will not be there.

If you spot an error, please contact placement@burningman.org and we will correct it.

The list is almost live and will be found here: 2015 Theme Camps | Burning Man

There's a clue

Here's a clue we might be a placed camp this year; hidden in the list of Theme Camps they have included Airstreameri and What Not. Yeayy. And there's another Placement no news letter #7 too I'll post later. Just now I'm able to sign up for some shifts at the DMV to qualify for the "staff ticket" (half off, for 18 hours of work on playa)

Placement Newsletter #7

Here's newsletter #7 from the Placement Gods:::::
Placement Newsletter # 7 2015

In this issue:

1. Fundraising for playa bound projects
2. Playa Health and Safety

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Hello Builders of Black Rock City!

With our second mapping weekend behind us, Black Rock City is taking shape!

We strive to accommodate all of your requests while keeping the over all population density and safety of the city in mind.

Making sure that placed camps are distributed evenly throughout the city is important as it affects everything from ice sales lines to emergency response time.

The Placement team also thinks about the look of the city. We've asked you to create alternatives to the RV fortress and you have! Camp plans with RVs are now showing fan shapes and circles and arcs. It is wonderful to see your creativity in action, not just in the public spaces you are creating, but also the private ones. I am hopeful the fortress and RV lined street is soon a thing of the past. Good work fine city, hats off to you!

Well designed camps promote interactivity and neighbourliness. Being a good neighbour is a vital part of being a successful Placed Camp. Good neighbours think about how their sound is affecting people, where their generators are and if their interactivity is spilling into the streets. Good neighbours talk to each other and try to solve their issues together.

Working together is at the heart of what it takes to make Black Rock City, and thank you everyone for your efforts and willingness to work passionately to build something astounding!

- Answergirl

PS - Want to write to us - email placement@burningman.org please put your 1st requested sector and camp name into the subject line for a fast response.

1. Fundraising for playa bound projects

Since many theme camp organizers may not be aware of our policy on using tickets for fundraising, the Burning Man legal team is sharing information that is helpful when planning fundraising events.

Please read all about it here:

2. PLAYA HEALTH AND SAFETY

Food and Health Permits

In order to fight the threat of food-borne illness on the playa, the Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) has requirements for camps preparing food including the need of a health permit and an inspection. You must apply for and be permitted as a Temporary Food Establishment by the NSHD if:

* You will be cooking or serving food to large groups of more than 125* FELLOW CAMPERS of your theme camp on a consistent basis.

(If you have a communal kitchen shared by 125 or more campers, but meals are prepared individually, or in smaller quantities than for 125 persons, a permit is not required, however we highly recommend you research and review safe food handling practices, starting with the Nevada Division of Health information).

* You wish to share, cook or serve food or non-alcoholic beverages to the general Burning Man population (gifting food).

Here are the permit procedures and deadlines:

If you have already applied for a permit, you should be receiving instructions in the mail soon.

If you are planning to make and give away food or drinks to the public on the playa including fresh squeezed juice, coffee with dairy, or even snow cones, you need a permit. Here's the scoop from Cindy Ulch, Supervisor with the Nevada State Health Divisions Public Health and Clinical Services Environmental Health Program:

The only application any camp needs is the "Food Permit Application for Burning Man" found here:

Nevada State Health Division

On the application, the event coordinator is "Burning Man". Leave the location blank, unless you know what street and intersection you be at during the event. After mailing the application and $50 USD payment, all anyone needs to do is come and pick up their permit at Playa Info in Center Camp during the following days:

*** New for 2015 - a direct response to requests for longer pick up hours from Theme Camps***

We will be handing out permits at Playa Info
Saturday, the 29th: 1-2:30 pm
Sunday, the 30th: 11:30 am -2:30 pm
Monday, the 1st: 11:30 am-2:30 pm
Tuesday, the 2nd - Thursday, the 3rd: 1-2:30pm

We do this so that we can get an accurate camp location from which to do inspections. WE are NOT issuing new permits at Playa Info.

More information about deadlines will come in a future newsletter. We wanted to get this information out now to let you know your feedback is important and influential and to get health permit on your to do list in plenty of time.

Water

Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects that entail full body contact or consumption by people must be "potable" and come from state health department approved water sources.

Water being used for misting systems and ways that do not involve consumption do not need health department clearance. It is wise to make sure that you have "potable" water and the source is reputable!

All public pools, bathing, showers, (or 'Slip-n-Slides') – that would risk full-body contact with contaminated grey water – are prohibited.
Art pieces involving water are allowed, unless they are being used for showering or bathing, in which case they risk being shut down.

Bars and Drinks

If you are providing alcoholic beverages – without fresh juice, and with ice from a health dept -approved sources like our ice sales – no health permit is needed.

Fresh juice is food. If you are giving away freshly-squeezed fruit drinks to 125+you must get a permit.

Ice

Ice is considered food by the health department. Although there should be no permits needed for bars, your ice source must be approved by state health. The easiest way to comply is to purchase your ice from commercial sources in the surrounding towns as you enter our city, or from us at the event. (Monies from our ice sales go directly back to the town of Gerlach as a gift.)

More info.

Check out our page on health related issues. There are all kinds of interesting topics covered, from pregnancy to rebar safety, first-aid kits, fuel storage, etc.

Silver Dragon on Playa

The Silver Dragon was on Playa for 4thJuplaya. We stayed for the 5th, was going to stay that night but at about 7 there was a very dark cloud coming over the mountain and we decided to head for high ground. Started to rain just as we were getting to 12 mile entrance, I got drenched getting out of the truck when we parked a half mile up and off the asphalt. Amazing to see the Playa turn into a lake in a few minutes. Just a few minutes longer and we would have been stuck for a day getting off. I suspect there's a geologic reason why the north west side of the playa, at 12 mile is a bit lower than the rest of the playa.

And, oh yeayyyyy!

Fellow dustyites, start your engines, get your planning gear on and lets do this!!!! From the Placement Gods:::::::::::

Congratulations!!!

It is our pleasure to inform you that Airstreameri and What Not has been officially placed for Burning Man 2015: Carnival of Mirrors!
Your approximate location is Geek & 3:15 and will measure approximately 200 by 200. If your dimensions contain a + or - sign, it means your camp is an odd shape.

We have approved x Early Arrival Passes to be used on or after Friday before the event.

How to find your location on playa:

1. Inform Gate or Greeters you are with a Placed Camp

2. Have them radio the Placement team and ask for Whatsit & Pono

3. Proceed to a meeting point as directed by your placer

4. Await your placer to show you to your camp location

Please note: If your ticket is at Will Call, do not arrive before Monday, August 24 at 12pm (noon) PDT when the Box Office Will Call opens.

Each camper must have both their paper ticket and a unique printed Early Arrival Pass in hand to enter Black Rock City before our event opens to the general public.

If you have any more questions, send an email to placement@burningman.org and put your camp name in the subject line.

Good luck, we’re excited to see you out there.

Sincerely,

Whatsit & Pono
