Hi Bam, looking forward to seeing you and the streamers, and lounging in the shade. My daughter and I will be pulling out of NYC for the drive to Black Rock on Sunday. All good miles!

Yes. ^That^.

Remember, you can't buy anything on playa except ice and coffee and, for us that use our indoor plumbing; there are vacuum trucks that roam the city eager to empty our holdings in exchange for 60 bucks or so. They always seem to show up as we sit down for our Wednesday 6ish potluck, but dont worry, they're roaming all week just for the flagging down.

Who is arriving early to meet with HepKitten?

Bart, Brian and I will be at Berlin sometime Friday afternoon/evening, Aug. 23. Stop by and say Howdy if you're not too busy wrangling those big silver things into place.

Yeay welcome DrSuze! We'll kidnap you for our Wednesday evening science and and and talk. Informal, we have questions for the audience answers. I'll say a few words about the dust, if Gary comes he'll give a full on seminar on the minutia of the geochemistry of the minerals that make up the playa, hopefully our Gynocologists will have a few words too.
Oh, somebody bring a megafone or something, Gary can't talk very loud.

Placement Newsletter #10

Just to annoy you with more stuff from placement, so I'm not the only one to read it. It's so long I'll break it into two, the second part is exodus. Oh, note number 9, they do search for feather boas or boas or boasting boring people... Bring them some donuts, gate and greeters::::::::::::::::::::::

We are all very excited to see all of you in a matter of days!! Safe
travels and good luck with your final hours of packing and prepping.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

1. What YOU need to know

GETTING IN:

1. Please drive safely and be considerate while passing through local
towns. Speeding, parking on highway shoulders, and unsafe driving are
safety hazards and could threaten the future of the event.

2. The Gate will officially open at 6pm on Sunday August 25th. We cannot
allow people who show up early to wait in town due to safety issues and
the impact on the local community. When the Gate opens, we give will give
priority to those who show up on time. This means that if you show up
early and we have to stage you somewhere, you will get in later than if
you showed up on time.

3. With an expected population of 68,000, this will be our busiest year
yet at the Gate. Wait times during the first 24-36 hours after opening
could be 5 or more hours.

4. During peak traffic periods we will be controlling traffic with
highway flaggers along Hwy 447 at the Gerlach gas station. Past experience
has shown that long lines at the gas station have caused unsafe
conditions. Once the line reaches the edge of the gas station, you will be
instructed to continue driving. Don't risk it! Fill up before Gerlach.

5. As you approach the Burning Man entrance from the highway, tune your
radio to 95.1 FM for the Gate Advisory Radio Station! We will be
broadcasting up to date info about the entry process.

6. Drive no more than 10mph on Gate Road. Speeding causes ruts in the
playa surface. And the dust you create when driving more than 10mph can
make it hard for you to see our volunteers in the lanes and for other
drivers to see you. Play it safe.

7. Stay in your vehicle. If you need to go to will call, your entire
vehicle should go with you. Every year people lose their friends because
they wander off and can't find their vehicle.

8. About 1/4 mile before you reach the Gate you will come to a set of
small kiosks we call the ‘Apex.’ During busy times there will be Gate
staff here to direct you. There is an empty zone just after the "Apex"
that will allow vehicles in ANY lane to turn into the Will Call lot.

9. Upon reaching the Gate your tickets will be scanned and torn, and your
car searched. Plan ahead for the search and know what items are
prohibited. Items Not Allowed Through Gate - Survival Guide

10. Be patient. Chances are high that many other Burners will decide to
show up when you do, and with a single two lane rural highway leading to a
single entry point, expect to wait. Use this time to get to know your
neighbors!

11. Carpool! Fewer vehicles = less traffic = shorter wait times = better
for the environment. Winning!

SPEEDING ON GATE ROAD

With more vehicles than ever entering BRC, speeding on Gate Road is having
an adverse effect on our leave no trace efforts and your suspension.
Here's why: speeding causes your tires to churn up more of the playa
surface into dust. More vehicles speeding = more dust = worse condition of
the playa on Gate Road.

The dust created from vehicles driving too fast significantly reduces
visibility. This is dangerous for our staff who are working on Gate Road
in traffic. It is also dangerous for other drivers when they cannot see
clearly.

The speed limit on Gate Road is 10 MPH, always.

Early arrivals & pre-event
If you are arriving before
Wednesday August 21st at Noon (when will call opens) you MUST have a
physical ticket in hand or a staff entry credential. If you are arriving
before the event starts with a physical ticket, you MUST have an early
arrivals barcode for entry (every person in your vehicle must have a valid
barcode, they are not "good for two"). All staff and participants arriving
pre-event will be issued a pre-event wristband. You must wear this
wristband until the Gate opens to the public.

Ins &
outs

The Gate will start charging the $20 fee for a re-entry pass (to leave and
return to BRC) starting at 6pm on Sunday August 25th. Anyone leaving
before that time must be wearing their pre-event wristband and have their
ticket stub in hand when they return. We strongly discourage anyone from
leaving or re-entering BRC on Sunday 8/25 and Monday 8/26 due to the very
heavy traffic.

Placement Newsletter #10 Exodus

2. EXODUS

One of our biggest challenges is how to get many thousands of people out
of Black Rock City with reasonable wait times. We've explored lots of
options and our geographical location means that traffic will be, for the
foreseeable future, a very real challenge. In 2012 we had more
participants than ever before, and saw vastly reduced wait times from the
year prior. Why? Mainly because participants spread out their departures
over many days and times. This is the single biggest impact we can have on
Exodus traffic, but it takes all of us planning ahead to make it happen.

The key message for this year: establish an Exodus plan as part of your
Burning Man preparation. Create an internal camp schedule that spreads out
the departures of each vehicle over multiple days and times, especially
during non-peak times if possible. Read this blog post on how we can make
it happen:
Burning Blog » Blog Archive » Exodus: Let’s do it again! This time with feeling.

GETTING OUT:

1. How do you pick the best time to leave? Listen to the community. If
everyone you talk to says they are staying to watch the Temple burn on
Sunday night, then Monday is going to have very long wait times. If there
is a major storm predicted for the weekend, then a bunch of people will
probably leave early.

2. If you are looking for a shorter wait time, your best bet is to leave
on days other than Sunday and Monday. If you are part of a theme camp or
art project, schedule your tear down so that your crew leaves after
Monday.

3. Upon leaving your camp, head straight to L Street at the back of the
city. This is the most direct route to Gate Road and helps to prevent the
city center from getting clogged up.

4. Use all available lanes on Gate Road until you hit the back-up. All
lanes on Gate Road during Exodus are outbound lanes.

5. If the vehicle in front of you is stopped, and traffic in front of it
has moved on in a Pulse, go around the stopped vehicle. Do not change
lanes! Do not merge into the lane next to you. Go around the stopped
vehicle, and stay in your same lane.

6. Prepare for Pulsing! Pulsing does not get you out quicker, but it does
allow you to stop your vehicle for periods of time and get to know your
neighbors. Keep a good attitude. Make sure loads are secure and no trash
is loose!

7. Ultimately we must rely on the community to police itself and ensure
that their fellow participants are respecting the process. If you see
people cheating the system, say something! YOU can help make it fair by
informing people about the process and making sure they follow it.
