Burning Man 2012! Planning Thread
As requested by our esteemed paper pusher and planning chief Perry,
here is our unofficial official thread for this summer's party on the playa.
Once again we are rallying an Airforums group of Airstreamers to gather
in the dust for a theme camp at Burning Man 2012.
Dates are August 27 - September 3, 2012.
This thread is for people planning to attend who want to participate in
a theme camp. Again, Burning Man is not for everyone and if you haven't
attended before, please go to burningman.com and read everything,
especially the First Timer's Guide.
Participation in a theme camp is not mandatory and anyone can go and camp
by themselves or with friends.
So that said, let's get a group together and start planning. I'm in.
All suggestions welcome.
Cheers!

Bam,
While I'm not attending this year, I did participate in Burning Man 2011 in a rental RV, and we even brought our ten and five year old daughters and stayed in the Kidsville theme camp. The experience was amazing, and I do plan to pull my Airstream there sometime in the future.
That being said, I'm happy to offer tips/ advice on the experience, especially if traveling with children, if I can be helpful.
Best
Jim

Thanks Jim. Tips are always appreciated. We haven't had any young kids in our camp.
A number of us have camped together on the Playa for years now. Last year was unusually mild weather which was great. But blistering hot days and freezing cold nights, white out dust storms, and even rain are also common.
Good preparation is a must.
It is worth the trouble. It's a very unique experience in community as well as art and music. But we won't debate it's merits here. It's a little crazy and not for everyone. This thread is for those who have decided to go and want to plan a theme camp.
Ideas for themes? Anyone?
I guess we'll know in a few weeks who has actual tickets so far...

Maybe first order of business is somebody find the words to the song: Sun so hot I froze to death, the weather it was mild..... (Big Rock Candy Mountain). Double rain bows, even triple rainbows most every year. Snowing and 100+, could be same day.
We're all kids in this camp anyway, just some of us shave, or quit.
Any way, welcome home everyone for another year of fantastic art to see and a fun group of crazy folks to be known as. I just found out I qualified for a DMV staff ticket ($100 off the full price, for only 4 shifts of work checking out fantastic moving Mutant Vehicles on playa). DMV will be starting on line processing of the Mutant Vehicle applications late April, but that's another story.
If we wish to be a "placed theme camp" the usual date for our compilation of planned confundus and community excitation is end of April, but I haven't seen any note on that yet.
Yeayyy, plan on!

Hey, don't I have your barbeque thingy? It was on Playa again with firewood last year, but still hasn't had any fire. Seems no one hangs around a campfire at this rally. (at least not in Our camp)
oh, just in, probly old news to most of you: theme for this year is Fertility 2.0 .. now that will make for some different Mutant Vehicles in DMV processing. sheesh Log In | Facebook

We had to split our order so as to get tickets for me and the kids. Bart gets a comp ticket for his rangering. We put in for two sets of two, so that if either one lost out, we'd only have to hunt up one spare ticket.
Bart got confirmation that he got two tickets. I haven't heard about my two.

I've never been to this event, it sounds interesting, and the original Harry McClintock lyrics of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" are suggestive, rightly or wrongly, of what my mind's eye envisions of this gala. The line above is actually from "Oh! Susanna".
I come from Alabama with my Banjo on my knee--
I’se gwine to Lou’siana my true lub for to see.
It rain’d all night de day I left, de wedder it was dry;
The sun so hot I froze to def -- Susanna, dont you cry.
Chorus:
Oh! Susanna, do not cry for me;
I come from Alabama, wid my Banjo on my knee.

Congrats to all you lucky ticket holders!
This sure has been an unusual (and that's putting it nicely ) ticket system this year.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

I have a question for past burners: I know about the heat, cold, dust, wind, rain, noise, on the playa; how about flying insects such as flies, mosquitoes, gnats? In other words, do I need to fix the screens on my 'Stream?

essentially zero insects. at least when you're out walking around. I don't know about when you're a sleeping target, since I have screens, but I think it's zero.

In the three years I've gone, I think I've seen four bugs...not KINDS of bugs...four individual bugs, not counting the wasps that hitched a ride on the art car.

I got word from Burning Man Ticketes that I didn't get picked for the lottery. I'll be learning all about their ticket resale system, I guess.

Did you get a refusal notice that you weren't picked in the lottery? There are still other ways to get tickets. I'm hoping they work out, because we're still short a ticket.
