It's raining again... Rained a little last week as well.. So we'll see how much we get. It's a good thing overall, but hopefully it's dried out nice for us by the 4th...

And now the latest word from Placement, RE Food on playa which you really didn't want to know but I'll bore you with it anyway. I've looked up the permits required, they don't look that intimidating, even a geologist could figure them out. Basically, no home cooked, or wild game, or road kill, only store bought ice, and you need a wash station (spigot on a barrel of water and soap) and a 3 basin utinsel wash; (wash, rinse, sanitize) AND someone be skeweried on the permit as the responsible person, and take food prep temperatures on a log. So here goes the Placement Announce from today::

NEW FOR 2011: FOOD PREP FOR ≥125? - PUBLIC OR PRIVATE - NOW NEEDS A PERMIT

In order to fight the threat of food-born illness on the playa, this year the Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) is expanding their requirements
for camps preparing food who must have a health permit and schedule an inspection. You must apply for and be permitted as a Temporary Food
Establishment by the NSHD if:

• [NEW] You will be cooking or serving food to large groups of more than 125* FELLOW CAMPERS of your theme camp on a consistent basis.

(If you have a communal kitchen shared by 125 or more campers, but meals are prepared individually, or in smaller quantities than for
125 persons, a permit is not required, however we highly recommend you research and review safe food handling practices, starting with
the Nevada Division of Health information).

• You wish to share, cook or serve food or beverages to the general Burning Man population (gifting food).

Bars and pre-packaged food exception:

• NSHD does NOT require permits of, or regulate vendors who wish to share, prepare, or serve the following items only:
o Alcoholic beverages
o Foods that are commercially pre-packaged, individually packaged/packaged by serving and non-temperature sensitive.

• Temporary Food Establishment Applications are available online at the NSHD’s Environmental Health Section website:

http://health.nv.gov/BFHS_EHS.htm -- Scroll down to the Burning Man specific content denoted with flames.

Applying

The health department has forms ready to send out to you. It costs about $50.00 to apply for a basic permit. The process is simple and
the health department is easy to work with. They are genuinely concerned about the health of our citizens and prevention of food-born
epidemics, so it is their duty to inspect food preparation areas. Like the other public safety agencies on the playa, they can issues
citations and fines for violations, and/or shut you down for non-compliance.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: Please contact Cindy Ulch (775) 623-6591 or email culch@health.nv.gov.
You may also contact Ellen Kunz (775) 623-6588 or emailekunz@health.nv.gov in Cindy’s absence.

If you are not COMPLETELY sure about your particular needs, we strongly advise you to contact us before calling them. They need about
4 weeks to process your permit so don't leave this to the last minute. Contact us or them soon!

The process in the last couple of years is for you to send your permit fee to the Health Department. On the playa, they will have morning
hours at Playa Info in Center Camp to give you your permits and arrange for your inspection. Future announcements will have their days
and hours for permit distribution. We will also be posting a reminder about food permits -- including important deadlines -- in the weeks ahead.

Please pass this information to who ever it concerns in your camp.

Water

Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects that
entail full body contact or consumption by people must be "potable"
and come from state health department approved water sources. If you
are bringing in a water truck or are hauling in large amounts of water
you should speak to us directly. There are health department
regulations that you need to be aware of. Email us at placement@burningman.com

Water being used for misting systems and ways that do not involve consumption
do not need health department clearance. It is wise to make sure that you have
"potable" water and the source is reputable!

Public pools and showers will not be permitted. Art pieces
involving water are not considered showers unless they are labeled
such and encourage bathing. If you have questions about this, email us
at placement@burningman.com

Kitchen/Bars or Drinks

If you are providing beverages and/or food for your camp and friends,
no health permit is needed.

PUBLIC kitchens of any sort need a permit. Remember, Burning Man does
not tolerate the sale of anything at the event, including food. We
have cultivated a gift economy. If you are caught selling or bartering
food like currency the health department will shut you down -- if your
neighbors don't get to you first!

Fresh Squeezed Juices

Fresh juice is food. If you are giving away freshly-squeezed fruit drinks to anyone other
than your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS, you must get a permit.

Ice

Ice is considered food by the health department. Although there should
be no permits needed for bars, your ice source must be approved by state health.
The easiest way to comply is to purchase your ice from commercial sources in the
surrounding towns as you enter our city, or from us at the event. (Monies from our
ice sales go directly back to the town of Gerlach as a gift.)

GENERAL HEALTH & SAFETY

Check out our page on health related issues. There are all kinds of
interesting topics covered, from pregnancy to rebar safety, first-aid
kits, fuel storage, etc.

Just starting my rebuild but next year if you have room in your camp , I'm there!
The decision to rebuild an airstream was 75% delusions of camping on the Playa one day.

Thank you for your in-depth research on all matters foodie Mr. Geo.
I think I'll stick to serving a few random baked goods for our camp's assorted potlucks.

And perhaps a couple of 2am feedings for wandering souls...

Cheerios.
