A bunch of us meet here Sat or Sun Desert Rose
and it is a great place to de compress also. If you don't want to stay there , I'm sure they would let you fill up there and on return you can dump there for $5. You can also get water just about anywhere in Fernley, they are very burner friendly.

Can't think of a better school week than checking out the latest welded and cut metals artwork and structural stuff on the playa. There was a 10 story steel building, full-penn welded out, pretensioned A325 bolts. Lots of interesting welding on Mutant Vehicles. What's your classes this year?
Remeber you could catch a ride into the Black Rock City International airport for a few days.

At Burning Man I have been fortunate to put up my awnings and let them stay up with the following design. Make sure you park so that the prevailing winds (yes wind direction changes from time to time) are aligned the length of your Airsteam. Open your awning then apply a hold down system of cargo straps WITH RATCHETS connected from the awning roller on either side of your awning to 2' to 3' rebar stakes that have been set a few feet out from the awnings and pounded DEEPLY into the ground. Next put up 2 mesh tarps with attachment grommets on the sides of your awnings to keep wind from blowing through the length of the awning area. Attach the tarps at the top with bungee connectors and on the bottom with rebar or other stakes. (Thank you, Monte for this idea!) These tarps are roughly 6'x8' and are a little porous to the wind. Tarps are priced at $20 each and can be found at
Tarps - Poly Tarps, Canvas Tarps - Tarps Plus
more specifically:
Mesh Tarps

I was so preoccupied both times I've gone that I don't recall. The first trip I stepped out of my Mini Cooper, into a 30' MH and drove up there. I felt like I was piloting the Graf Zeppelin. Had two breakdowns, 6 new tires, and an unexpected layover in Folsom(no, not the prison), and another breakdown in Gerlach, just for good measure.

Google maps says 2 hours and 45 min.

I also put my awning out, and leave it up. I use the same type of cargo straps as Mark, and hook them to each end of the Zip Dee awning and to the slots in my alcoa wheels. I keep them tight and have no problems.
Not sure if you have an anchor as "bomb proof" as the wheels, on your trailers, but perhaps there is something underneath that you could connect to. Ron

This is how we've held our structures down in past years - heavy ratchet ties and 30" rebar welded T-spikes. Since folks have had experience w/ this, I'll try this out.

Thanks for the info!

I only have second-hand experience with this, but my awning rail has loose and missing rivets at both ends, obviously from being overstressed, likely from high wind. I will be using a separate structure instead of risking that kind of damage.

I have added our Burning Man rally and RSVP list to the Airforums rally calendar in August 2010. Until it appears at the bottom of the Airforums home page it can be found at:

Airstream Forums - Burning Man 2010

BURNING MAN 2010
Burners and Virgin Burners the time to assemble is rapidly approaching!
This event is the third annual Burning Man rally open to AirForums members and guests. A group of Airstreamers will meet at the Desert Rose RV Park in Fernley, NV (Desert Rose) and depart in a caravan for Burning Man near Gerlach, NV several hours to the north. (Caravan departure time is to be determined: Sunday late evening or early Monday morning.) Once the caravan arrives a camping spot will be chosen and the group will park in a first come first served basis. Late comers will be able to find a directional guidepost sign at the intersection of 3 o'clock and "H". Details of group activities etc. will be developed in the discussion thread at
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f288...0-a-59951.html
Please sign up on the RSVP list so we can estimate the number of attendees.
There is no limit to attendees. For more information on Burning Man and ticket purchases go to :
The Burning Man Project :: Welcome Home
Hope to see you there.

Presently working on an application for placement of a small dysfunctional bunch of Geology types camp, hopefully someone will give an informal armwaving geology talk about playa dust or those black rocks, maybe answer a question if we thought we knew a plausible answer or two. Probably a half dozen geotypes.
I'm wondering if the Airstreamerereiers would be interested in another part of the camp, maybe somebody could give a demonstration on how not to polish aluminum or how not to tow or something.
I intend to keep this fun, simple, rum, vacation too with nobody needing to do much more than say boo
But the deadline is coming in a week to get the app in
So who's in? Might just kidnap Marks list for grins
Since I plan to be "on playa" for an earlier shift at the DMV, probably Sundee
I do need some email addys for the app form, not everyone's
And make a map. With an X on it for placement.
Sure hope we get Barts' MV
If I figure out how, I'll send a PM of my writing for your pervue.
Perry
We had some summer last week, winter's coming back tonight, homesick here for the playa:

Hey Zep, absolutely. Especially if you could describe the how not to do a ZipDee.
Hope your job is being more playa friendly this year. I'm inspecting on another new Wal-Mart, this one right on I-80 at 395 in Reno. Might be open in time for Burners this year.

Can somebody find a simple site plan I could peruse (read "copy") for one of our old camps? Right now the plan is Airstreameri on the right, Geology types on the left. But I gotta have a map to include in the application. Does 15' by 50' per Airstream/tow vehicle unit with awning sound about right?
Thanks muchly, with a thick coat of playa dust on it. (Who can list the three most common components of playa dust, test question)

According to
Silicate-Based Molecular Nanotechnology, I

(oxide percentages by weight):

43.1 % SiO2
25.4 % various organics
11.8 % Al2O3

There are also various light metal compounds; those are what produces the alkalinity we all remember....

Wow Bart, that was fast. Looks like you're missing a bunch of CaO, but now I'll have to go dig that up.
Found some plans, back in Feb of 08. Thanks Zep! I'm working at keeping it at 150' X 150' but still have room for 20 units.
May I list Bart's MV as a camp resident? I'll need some particulars on fuel, fuel storage and all that though for the app.

According to that paper, CaO amounted to 4.51%, so didn't
make the top three....

Sure... since RoboShaw's prime mover is nothing but a 6 hp industrial engine, 10 gallons of gas is all we use all week... we'll also have 4 x 20 lbs of propane for Robo's fire effects.

We're sure to have one tent w/ 10'x20' monkey hut; perhaps two, so if things are very space constrained we may need to seek a larger space. We also have RoboShaw (6'x15') that needs streetside parking, and a small evap. pond (4'x4') behind the 'stream, as we don't have a gray water tank in our '71.

We generally find sitting under shade along the street to be a comfortable way of coming to grips w/ daylight in the morning, so setting up some community space that has some shade streetside is nice.

Some effort will need to be made co-ordinating late arrivals & early departures w/ this tight a space; we've had problems w/ that before.

I'm also trying to go through Ranger training this year...

Are we trying for a theme camp this year? Deadline in 2 days....

Ehya, less than two days, the map has to be in too. Has RoboShaw gone through processing? I'll try to look it up...another day tho, gotta be at work in 7 hours, then if the wind is down and not raining, the roofers will work until dark. Cutting up Zeps plan and moving things around looks like I need to ask for 150 by 170 minimum. Probably not much chance they'll accept my app. "Airstreameri & Geologists" since they hold ya to 34 characters.
One of DMV's lead council is also a Ranger.
What kind of sample was that chemical analyis of, I didn't get to follow it up.

Not yet.. not too worried; Robo's been on the playa since 2005 w/o a complaint.

"Bauxite Hounds" might work...

That sample was Black Rock desert playa dust according to the paper.

I've rsvp'd for our group... I'm already longing for the playa. Maybe time to sniff the coat again:

I like the circled wagons effect of the third one, even though it doesn't use space quite as efficiently. There's something about the idea of being surrounded by a wall-o-luminum.
