I didn't need to buy any ice the whole 9 days, my original (I think) refrig worked a-ok. Actually was able to lend Mark some ice in a Bloody Mary emergency. They were so tasty too! It also froze solid the little homecoming refreshment I gave out for the crew on Monday.

I was working on my propane lines under the Safari today and I found my line to the refer was pinched almost shut, so I believe I found why I had problems last year.
On the subject of bloody marys, did anyone else find the Castle Rock vodka trailer last year? I had a habanero vodka bloody mary that actually made me SWEAT! WOO HOO!

And that refreshment was much appreciated. Ron

Amen. This month of silence was brought to you by New and Improved Dust Remover; friends, does your dust remover cough and hack at the lack of dust in your system, does it long for that opaque view out your window of a passing white out, does it need a dose of genuine Black Rock City real-estate? Coming soon to a playa near you, we're almost halfway there!
Kisses from the Playa Homesick anybody? It's almost time to get your planning on.

I've been cleaning out my trailer for an upcoming camping trip
and have discovered some new secret playa dust locations.
Just when you think you've gotten all the dust out...

always a reminder of Black Rock City.

We always put that in there on purpose, little calling cards saying "Black Rock City calling." Same with those glow stick caps.

I am planning the first trip to BM this year and wanted to ask some advice from seasoned Airstream Burners . I understand there is some RV support on the Playa by way of "johnny on the spot", but i was wondering how reliable that was? I plan on taking an auxiliary tank for some extra water but I think I will need an "empty", before the weeks outs. Any advice?

1) Use the port-a-pottys as much as possible to avoid filling your black tank.

2) Don't shower, it will make you look out of place. If you must, try an outdoor shower set-up, with an evaporation tray. It works great for me, and its pretty easy to get one set-up.

3) Go to www.burningman.com and read all of the orientation stuff you can find. They will give you the low-down on the pumper trucks and LOTS of other ideas for water conservation, so you can last the whole week.

When I was getting ready for my first Burn I asked my friend, an experienced burner, what I should bring, thinking I would get all the low-down on this stuff from him. He said "bring a pirate costume, and a clown suit"
That kind of tells you what kind of people and event you are getting into. It's a fantastical thing, like falling through the rabbithole. I see things each year that just awe me and blow my mind away. I hope you enjoy it as much.

For three years of seven (four in a tent) I took the Airstream. I carried 10 gallons extra water in the truck. I showered every two days (navy shower-water off then on etc.), no problems. The last year there two of us did this drill. I used the porta johns during the day. The back water never was close to full. My friends in an RV would save all dish washing water during the day in a container and use it to flush the toilet. It worked out great. Be efficient and you'll be fine.

There's vacuum trucks making rounds every day, you flag one down and bribe them to come empty your tanks. They charge $60 or so. Usually the camp gets dysfunctionally organized to collar a driver about Thursday or Wednesday, but you're always gone when they show up so you usually have to go flag down somebody yourself. Not a big worry, you can find them with your nose. We do try to park so they can get near our waste lines but that doesn't always work our, guaranteed some S.O.B will squat in our exit path. Another reason to get officially placed by the theme camp placement. What we did find was our Airstream hook up seems to not be standard with the modern S.O.B flange, something I need to remember to find before BM.
A trick I found was my built on outside clothes rack worked great to hang towels sopped up with bathwater or what, would be dry before the wind picked up and took the towels away. The extra playa dust mud the wind would deposit on them helped hold them down.

Kisses from the Playa Homesick yet?

Thanks for the advice guys . Next question, I have been to the BM website and been reading all the "first timer" info they have, but as far as Stream' specific stuff I figured this was the best spot. Now for those that have ridden the playa before, how did your awnings handle the wind? Did you even put the awnings out?

This year will be the first year w/ our AS, but I've been to Burning Man 5 times... we're NOT going to deploy the awning. Shade will be a separate structure, guyed to the playa as usual w/ 30" rebar stakes and ratchet ties. Remember, the weather can change pretty quickly there, and there are many things to distract you from getting back to camp - captured by Animal Control, volunteering to help get the playa are put together, meeting some interesting people, getting a ride on a art car and ending up two miles from camp, ... Our standard comment is that everyone's IQ drops there by 30 points or so... perhaps it's just everyone dealing w/ instant ADD from all the bright and shiny things to see and do.

Here's a bit of video

barts, thanks for the info. You mention a seperate structure for shade, any suggestions for that? From the video you posted doesn't look like your standard everyday Eze-up would last.

Kestell,
An Ezy up worked for me in 2008. Roped down with bungy cords to J hooked re bar.
30 gals of fresh water provided a daily shower for me and I gifted a few showers, but that is another story. I'm glad for the dust storms, otherwise I would have never gotten any Sleep!

Speaking of water, since i'm looking at a 10hr drive from home to the playa I don't plan on pulling a full tank all the way there. Any ideas for "last chance", places to top off the tanks before heading to camp?

We stopped here to fill our water and to dump on the way out. They are very nice folks, and happy to help burners.
