Maybe we could take a futuristic angle instead - Alumetropolis.
Aluminum hats optional. Aluminized flamingos, maybe?.

I plan on making Prodex hats, and maybe bringing enough extra to help others make their own. I might try out some other clothing items made from it also, but hats are just a natural for this stuff. Maybe a tinman suit would be fun!
I can smell the sashimi already.....Got my ticket ordered last night.
Tomorrow is the Precompression event in SF. Anyone gonna be there?

And RoboShaw is approved for bringing to the playa... got the email this evening.

How exactly all the toys are going to get to Burning Man isn't quite yet clear, but we'll manage in one fashion or another....

Does it matter as to what tickets we buy? Stan
Tickets are tickets...all the same...just different prices depending on how far in advance you buy them.

Everyone is welcome and there is PLENTY of room for all.
It's a very big playa out there!

Dearest friends, I just got this somber note from SHADOW:

On the matter of your questionnaire and placement, we regret to inform you....

WAIT!!! Wrong letter - sorry.

This message is to say thank you for your questionnaire and what you are offering to Burning Man : Metropolis 2010. Welcome to the ancient realm of Babylon - we've left Berlin in the dust!

Airstreameri & Geologists will have reserved placement for 2010. Your general address will be Baghdad & 3:00 and will have a space of 250 x 100. That first dimension is your approximate frontage size and the second is your depth. If your size is different from what you requested, it is because we review size requests, compare them with your maps and interactivity description and adjust accordingly. Sometimes it goes up, sometimes it goes down. Mostly it stays the same general square feet that you requested. We have YEARS of experience in plotting final camp sizes. If your camp has expanded since your questionnaire went in and you need more space you may be out of luck. The time to have told us this information was weeks earlier. You will likely have to look for ways to accommodate the additional folks into your space or look for other creative ways to resolve the expansion. It is nearly impossible at this point to increase your camp dimensions so please, don't ask.

I see that your camp requested 4 early arrival bar codes. You were approved for 4 passes. I will be sending out information on our Early Arrival Bar Code distribution and the general placement process for this year later. Please note: If your ticket is at Will Call- do not arrive before noon on August 25th. That is when the Box Office Will Call opens. Each camper must have their ticket and unique Early Arrival Bar code in hand to enter Black Rock City before our event opens to the general public.

(If you are a camp within a village, department camp, art support camp, etc. - the Placement team is not responsible for providing your Early Arrival Bar Codes)

We are encouraging your advance team to arrive by noon on Sunday, August 29th in order to avoid potential lengthy delays at the Gate.

We want to know when you have arrived on Playa. If your point person arrives before Thursday, August 26th the Gate personnel will radio us. After Thursday, Greeters Station is up and running, and they will radio us. Just let them know you are a "placed Themecamp" and who your placer is. In fact - Tell them EVEN IF THEY DON'T ASK! If your camp is already in, we'll let you know. But if you are indeed the first person to arrive for your camp, we will escort you to the right spot!! We will send out more information on the placement process and Early Arrival passes later.

See you on the playa!

Shadow & BlackJack
Placement Team
Volunteers

And I'm on my way out there for JuPlaya this weekend, if I can ditch work in a couple hours.
PLAN ON!!
Perry

Perry, fabulous job of "git'er done" and securing a place on the playa for the group. Now the next big question- What does everyone need to bring? extra chairs? shade structure for the lecture area? etc I believe you requested some rum for your lecture -that always encourages the discussions!

Nice location!
Thanks Perry.

The Bam Lounge will be fully stocked with refreshments for thirsty Geolostreamers.
Nothing creates a powerful thirst more than a dusty lecture on dust.

Happy 4th of Juplaya.

Does anyone have any suggestions about shade modifications for Airstreams at Burning Man?

Is is possible/advisable to add shade cloth sides to a ZipDee awning?
Should one set up a free standing shade structure instead and not rig directly to the Airstream?
Could a PVC/parachute spider leg style dome over the trailer be made stiff enough that it won't batter the aluminum in high winds?
Would one want to shelter the whole trailer or would a structure on the side be sufficient?
What's a good material to keep out the sun but let some air through?

Thoughts/ideas?

This will be our first Burn with the Tin Pickle. We've done monkey huts over tables and tents in the past. We'll be using the Pickle for sleeping and some cooking and some showers, but plan on living outside much of the time. Why spend Burning Man closed up in a can, after all?

Yes, others have done it, using an open weave nylon that resembles a net more than cloth. But you better have a good frame at the bottom and strong tiedowns.

I used a 10x10 canopy a couple years ago and tied it down well enough to survive the dust storms. But it had no sides.

I doubt you can tie down a large shade structure well enough. Obviously, it can be done--people set up 12x30' tents and they survive. You really have to be prepared to bring 36" rebar and then be able to pull it out when you leave.

Something on the side would take less time to set up, less time to take down, and you woudn't bite your nails off worrying about your Airstream. I had a vintage awning (poles and ropes) installed in the awning rail and it survived the dust storms, but the flapping was pretty awesome.

That open weave coarse nylon that you see on some beach chairs would be my pick.

The bottom line is, you only need a small area of shade--unless you're planning on all of us being next to your Airstream, of course. Keep it simple your first time.

I built a shade structure for 2008 BM big enough to cover my trailer. It did not fall down. However it moved so much that no one wanted to be near it.

Space for sociability is always good! Come on by and have a beer!

Thanks so much for the pointers. We'll likely have a table outside so that the eaters can eat without waking the sleepers. Doing so in comfort without blocking the AS with a monkey hut will be the challenge.
