You assume we gave them away to people that didn't help us transport our tower, lights, and sound equipment...These people weren't actually part of our camp (to begin with), but after driving down from Oregon and helping us set up they became part of our collective. Also, I am not the coordinator of our camp. I was not given any early arrival passes (I couldn't arrive until Thursday afternoon) and was unaware of any limitations on 'giving them away'. I only spoke of CL because I saw them advertised there.

I didn't give someone grief for not reading an article. I was addressing reason he didn't read it. I'm certain several people have read my post and not go on to read the article. Was I addressing them? Nope.

Lastly, I am well aware of why there are undecorated golf carts running around. My problem is that the BRC DMV insists on judging cars based on their subjective criteria while undecorated stuff runs around. After my experience don't you think I should warn people of what may happen to them, or should I just remain silent? SHeesh....

Actually, I did read your experience with DMV in an earlier post and know that it is a common experience. They do have a tough job in my experience because they get so many requests for art cars but are limited in how many they can have come out. And I know that people put their hearts and soul into building these things and then do not get the coveted pass in the end. I do understand that frustration.

As for the passes, you really didn't say that the folks who got the 2 extras helped transport something for you. It just sounded like they were given away based on how you worded it. Many people were quite proud of getting extra passes and then just handing them out while other camps didn't get enough and struggled to set up. It is all over the ePlaya their frustrations. Heck, if you had mentioned that the 2 your camp had extra were used FOR the camp (instead of sounding like they were handed out) I might never have wondered. Sheesh! Anyway, it still sounds like they were not part of your camp but you were lucky enough to get their help and have them stay with you. How fortunate for you both.

Chiding someone for the reason they did not read an article is still passing judgement on them - something that upset you based on your experience with DMV. It doesn't matter what his reasons for not reading it. He expressed it and all I am saying is it is his right, that's all.

Anyway, it was a great year and I for one am looking forward to Metropolis!!! I think the theme is lively enough to spark some very interesting art and creativity. I am already planning for next year's projects.

I'm responding, but will allow you to have the last word on the subject (if you wish)...

"Chiding someone for the reason they did not read an article is still passing judgement on them - something that upset you based on your experience with DMV. It doesn't matter what his reasons for not reading it. He expressed it and all I am saying is it is his right, that's all."

Your entire message to me is chiding me for one thing after another. I only know one word that describes that.

As for your remarks about the DMV...You are repeating misconceptions that they want out there. There are no limits as to how many vehicles are granted a permit from any agency other than the what the BRC DMV decides. If you are aware that several people are disappointed, then why not let my post stand without your criticism?

As I said, this is the last post I'll make in this thread. You're welcome to the last word...

Ah - O.K. But I was actually AGREEING with you about the situation at DMV. And they DO have a limit of 500 vehicles that they will issue invites to. That is to limit the number of vehicles actually driving on the playa. And I was agreeing that there are lots of those vehicles that leave something to be desired.

Thanks for the last word.

I am not an Airstream owner, but was fortunate (thanks Brother Ed) to be able to camp with a group of great Airstream owners at Burning Man. Thanks to everyone for a most memorable experience.

onemanclan,

Thank you for your point of view. I was wrong for not staying on topic in this thread, and I said sorry, when Bam pointed it out.

But, if I may understand this correctly, I would like clarification from you on your post.

Anyone who's known me on this forum, for several years now, knows that I am fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The fact is that I could really care less what you do with your life, or how you conduct yourself, so long as it impacts noone physically, mentally or financially, ie: if you decide to go on a drug binge and then OD, get HepC or worse, don't expect my tax-paying dollars to take care of you, because of your decisions. The reason I cannot stand the Huffington Post is because of the rampant hypocracy it publishes. The message is, if you want to do something, be prepared to accept the consequences associated with those actions, that's all.

The reason I bring this up, and it does tie into this thread, I promise, is that if the people at BM think as you do, then maybe you're right, this isn't the place for me. It amazes me that people who tout themselves as non-judgemental and compassionate usually aren't, when others disagree with them.

On the flip side, since this is a place where people show up to artistically express themselves, then board shorts and a polo with Birks should be more than acceptable.

Thanks for helping me make up mind about going next year, onemanclan.

Tim, you rock, as usual.

Hmm - well, ahhh.... Maybe not. The motto (one of many) is no spectators and out on the playa, as odd as it MAY sound, that sort of attire stands out like a sore thumb. Change the shorts for a tutu and you are golden.

I've heard of problems getting a registration from the BRC DMV from others as well. It is not a sure thing for anyone who brings an art car to BRC to get a permit. My friend has been bringing the same art car for about 5 or 6 years, improved each year, and every year it's a worrysome thing weather or not he will be able to use it after all of the work and expense, and hauling it from Oregon. The BRC DMV has gotten a reputation for being kind of hard-assed but so have a lot of other event workers and organisers. I pulled into lot D to ask the good folks there if my campmates had left my early-arrival pass with them as they had told me they would try to. I got a lecture from them about how I was not only not going to get into the event, but also that my wife, who had her pass with her, would not be allowed to go into the event by herself to get our passes from our campmates. They told me that they couldn't allow her into the event on foot because she had arrived in the vehicle with us. She was "welded to the vehicle" according to them. I told them I would take my chances with the people at the gate and see if they would allow her in. They said that if I left lot D I would not be allowed to approach the gate, and would be escorted off the premises. This was what I had to deal with before I even got in the gate. I was treated like an a$$hole for simply asking them a question, then I was locked up in lot D for an hour and a half while they decided that we weren't part of a terrorist plot to take over Black Rock City. By the time I got to the Welcomers I was too pissed off to roll in the dust with them.
Last year the person who took our tickets was extremely rude, swearing at us for being there, in her line. She had definitly been in the sun too long.
I complain about these things, but they are all just part of the experience of the event to me. The difficulty of getting there, and the petty bull$hit we have to put up with makes me even more appreciative of the goodwill, kindness, and friendship I experience there.
I'm not certain, but I believe StingrayL82 hasn't been to the playa, and if he can't stand to read the Huffpost, I can understand that. Tolerance comes in many forms and it's not the same for all of us. I've read things here that made me shut my computer off for a while, and this is one of the most tolerant and friendly sites I come across.

"I can tolerate anything but intolerance"
I don't know who this is attributed to but it says a lot, doesn't it.

Viking,

I am disturbed to hear this story as I do not think that was appropriate behavior for gate and D lot personnel. I do know that they can harass people for fun but like you said, too many hours in the sun can make that harassment a little more serious.
They are technically the "greeters" until the greeters station opens up.

I also know that this was a common thing to leave passes at the gate for friends who were on the road and couldn't get them by email. Many camps got their passes late as there were apparently some problems with the sending of passes (again, that is on the ePlaya). In many cases, the themecamp in question was contacted one way or another and the passes were hand carried to the gate as needed.

I just think it should have perhaps been handled with a little more of a gentle touch, as all participants going to D lot should be. That can become one hot place to park in every sense of the word....

No, it wasn't appropiate for them to act as they did. I didn't show up asking for anything extraordinary from them, and I went into D lot of my own accord, not because I was sent there by the gate keepers.
But, like I said, it's part of the trip for me. If I bring an art car and don't get a permit, that's also part of the trip. I would have dissapointment, then I would probably change my art car into a stationary exhibit. I tend to roll with the punches pretty easily though. Not everyone does. Life on the playa is too short for me to spend my days furious about anything.

You're right, Rich, I've not yet been and, if the intolerance I've seen from onemanclan is any indication of what life at BM is like, then I might just pass.

Tim, no tutu, but I might be convinced to compromise on a grass skirt.

It's really not about WHAT you wear.
It's having the option to wear WHATEVER you want...tutus or tuxes or shorts and tees...or nothing but a smile.

As I said before in a group of 40,000 you'll find some of everything.

I'm guessing it's not Stingray's event...and that's okay too. There are plenty of others.

I always find it interesting that people who haven't been have so many opinions about it. And BTW, it is an art and music festival. There is fantastic art and music everywhere.

Just sayin'...

Intolerance is NOT the order of the day at Burningman. Just the opposite has been my experience.
BTW, grass skirts are a real mess on the playa. I was admonished for mine(gently) by a Leave No Trace person. Fake grass skirts are prefered.

One of my favorite stickers at the Burn was "IS MY D--K TOO LONG FOR THIS SKIRT?'
