"Smug as F--- Yuppies using their cash to act like Hippies for a week"....interesting description from the folks at Gawker.

Is that what really goes on? Posers trying to pretend they're something they're not?

I like the idea of a 50's theme, especially if there are martinis and Dean Martin involved, because that's timeless...doesn't mean I'd dress the part, but if there's drugs everywhere, it's not my idea of fun and being cool, especially when I hold a security clearance.

Don't believe everything you read. But it is a (temporary) city of 40,000+ people and in a city of that size you do get all kinds of people.
And it is a free and creative environment although there is plenty of security and law enforcement present.

If people dressing themselves and decorating their bikes, art cars, and camps in crazy, creative ways bothers you, skip it.

If you haven't been, I suggest you go to burningman.com and read the first timer's guide and everything else.
Check out the photos but do remember that the "boring" people dressed in "regular" street clothes rarely get photographed even though there are a lot of them.

Watch a few YouTube videos. You'll know if it seems like something you may enjoy.
It may not be your cup of tea. It is not for everyone.

It's definitely not a regular rally.

Well, it is fun, and it's very cool.
But, it's not for everyone.
It may not be for you.
We had a number of people leave early this year.
It's pays to do some research before you attend.

Had one and, yes, I did go for the 60th anniversary. It was great to see so many bikes there and no two looked alike.

Too true, this isn't for everybody. Not many events are. Even after reading everything on the website I didn't know what to expect. The first two days on the playa last year were like landing on Mars and finding life there. It was totally different from anything I've ever seen or experienced.
I asked my friend, who invited me, what I should bring. He said "Bring a pirate suit and a clown suit". Strange advice, to be sure, but spot-on. Of course a little water and food is a good idea too, but the costumes made it possible to be part of the action rather than just a spectator. Now I'm thinking about how to get a art piece or art car together for next year, to further involve myself in this crazy, wonderful event.
See you on the playa!
Rich

So, Rich, a good analogy would be Halloween on acid?

In Vegas!!!
But you really don't need to be on anything to experience this one. It is it's own drug.

After 10 years I continue to be impressed at the creativity and amazed at the variety of things to see and do out there. Next year I think will be a banner year with a theme I believe will inspire!

I just noticed that this thread has been perused 15068 times and only has 303 posts to it. That's about 1 in every 50 people posting. It seems that there is a lot of interest out there but a lot of viewers probably don't know what to make of this phenomenon. I notice the same thing with people who I talk to about Burningman.
Buttercup, Ditto on that. I'm also impressed by the generosity displayed out there. Someone gave our camp an art car! We serve food to hungry people each evening and lots of them bring things to trade or give us. We get cheered on by the crowd as we cook and serve, and we get some very interesting proposals sometimes, too. I almost got "adopted" by a wonderful, sexy older russian woman who insisted that I accompany her back to her camp. I feigned ignorance due to her heavy accent and made a quick exit....
Like my friends say,"anything can happen on the playa, if you just let it" .

At the risk of being flamed...You've been off the playa too long. Your comment smacks of being judgmental. You are saying you will not read an article because someone else contributed to the site about something you disagree with? Be tolerant my friend. That is a lesson that residents of Black Rock City should learn first...

Down With the BRC DMV...

I had a terrible experience with the BRC DMV this year. If you saw my posters protesting them, or heard me in center camp with my megaphone you already know my story. I've increased my participation over the last 7 years only to be DENIED a permit for an art car that I spent over $1000 on and 100 hours of my time. Why? TOTALLY subjective reasons. Your personal expression will be judged if you submit an application for a permit. I only got more pissed when I saw my actual art car (that I ended up selling) out on the playa with a handicap permit.

If you take a look around at the mutant vehicles you'll see some that will BLOW YOU AWAY with the amount of creativity involved. You will also be UNDERWHELMED by several of the golf carts running around. This will make you convinced you can do it too. Just be aware that you might get shot down like I did.

Not a flame but actually, one of the concepts of the event is radical self expression - and the tolerance that should be shown is in accepting Stingray's statement with compassion, not the other way around. We all have the freedon of speech but that doesn't mean that we must be forced to hear what others say.

Theme camps get early arrival. My camp mates are entering anytime SUNDAY...They have, of course, early passes available to theme camps (We're obnoXious)...My suggestion is to advertise on craigslist or the BM forums for an extra pass. My camp gets 4, but only 2 are being used. Sorry I can't help on the extras, they're spoken for already. BTW, you won't be let in early if you don't have a pass (this is my 7th year)...
{soapbox=on}
I see that your camp was given 4 Early Arrival Passes but used only 2, giving the other 2 away. I know that this is a big NO-NO as the passes were intended for building your camp, not for handing out to people who wanted them. I mention it only because I find it odd to take a swipe at someone for not reading an article but at the same time breaking the rules of the event. It doesn't seem fair or nice.
{soapbox=off}

As for looking on Craigs List for Early Arrival passes - you might want to ask Sakenoma what happened to them for giving away a pass in trade for a cheap ticket....

On Art cars and golf carts - I agree that there are a lot of golf carts, but many of them are the staff carts for the volunteers at the event and many of those folks do not have a lot of time to decorate them...
