Ok, who's interested in coming into the burn early next year on Sat and Sunday, as in Theme Camp? Who's interested in doing the theme camp thing, with camp placement assigned by friendly knomes we might happen to know. Who would be willing to sit shifts in camp judging the gorgeous scenery that goes by. Who could sort of guarantee their job won't make them pull a Betsey at the last day, like Zep had to stand down at the last week, and I was fortunate to have considerate folks at my work to be able to come. Who has the fantastical theme camp idea and maybe a greatest Mutant Vehickle? No SCGC need apply.
There just might be enough folks that want a couple extra days at the burn to pull it off, and we all noticed a lot of single aluminati out there.
Just asking. Mark and I had an "interesting time" being busted by the enforcers for hogging space before the midnight hour. They "helped" us remove the tape and came back to be sure we did. Then a few hours before midnight they "helped" us take in the chairs and stuff we had out to save your space. We definetlaly were on their radar. I've already been told that signs up about trying to save space for more airstreams will be frowned upon. Those ladies sure were cute but I suspect their daggers were circling around behind my back too.
Just a few more streamers with early arrival bar codes would really help, and a little more accurate count wouldn't hurt.
Planning: Sat, Sunday watch the BRC build. Monday, A/S set up lessons for the inetiatebriated, Cocktails. Tuesday, passerby viewing, cocktails, kazoo band at 11:30P. Wed. napping lessons in the shade, Pot luck at 6. Thurs Artery tour. Friday Airport tour in AM, CT in PM. Sat napping lessons in the shade, Man burns. Sunday watch the BRC fade away, Temple burns. Monday enjoy more art. Tues they say you gotta go.

Not a bad idea Geo.
I think the last 2 years we have tried to save toooo much space.
There are always things that come up and always several no shows.
And sometimes people just bail *coughMichaelcough* or Betsy early.
We probably either need to decide to be an actual theme camp
or
just pick a location and make it first come, first served.
It's not hard to save a few spots but roping off a huge area may be too much.
Late arrivals can just find a spot nearby and show up for the potluck.

We have a year to get a theme camp together if anyone has an idea they would like to develop.

Anyone?

How about an Airstream-shaped structure? A couple of good sized domes and something to connect them would suffice. A retro-theme, say The Fifties, with flamingos and a cocktail bar. Maybe a fog & bubble machine, and some fake palm trees. Some cool fifties jazz background music.
I can almost picture it now....

I like it.
Fun and easy and we all already have Airstreams.
And of course everyone loves retro (and cool cocktails).

Well, if there's a fifties theme involved, I'd like to see what all the hubbub's about. I even have Dean Martin records and my martini kit. Sherri, my late wife, always told me that I should have lived in the fifties. I took it as a compliment.

The thing with being a theme camp is that it's important to provide something in the way of a service or entertainment to the community.
Any ideas on what that could be? In some circumstances it's sufficient just to have a bar and music but to provide an extraordinary experience is much more rewarding for everybody. Something I always thought was cool is greatly over-size furniture. There's something really funny about watching a bunch of grown people sitting on a couch that makes them look and feel like they are five-year-olds. There are a lot of fun things you could do with something like this: a bar counter that's seven feet high, an ottoman that sits four and leaves their feet dangling in the air, chairs that you have to jump up onto to sit down in, a five foot tall coffee table.
Are there any set-makers in the forum? A giant Airstream with a giant interior would be fantastic fun.

Great ideas Viking.

At Burnstream Court a few years ago there was a bar of course, and a potluck (random people always show up and eat as they did even this year)
and a carnival with games that was fun...like bowling for beer or putting for Pabst.
Is pretty easy to come up with games.

We also had an open house so people could check out the Airstreams.

By far and away the best article I've ever read about Burning Man...A must read for you and everyone that knows that you are a resident of Black Rock City...

Jay Michaelson: The Truth About Burning Man

My favorite passage:

"
You don't get it. You don't get what it's like to have 50,000 people circle around a wooden effigy, with 1000 people spinning fire and 500 more playing drums, all encircled by 200 art cars -- and then all roaring in unison as the effigy is set afire. You might think you get it, and it may scare or tempt or delight you, but I assure you, you don't get it. None of us do, because it's not about any one thing in particular; "it" can be an orgiastic celebration, or the sad mourning of a lost loved one. Or a warm, hippie-like community. Or a mean, Mad-Max-like apocalypse. "It" is chiefly a space in which all these things are possible."

If it had been any other website than the Huffington Post, I might have read on, but I cannot, in good conscience, keep reading, when one of the contributors to that site suggested that Mary Jo Kopecni might have decided that it worth it to give up her life, so that Sen. Kennedy could have the great career he had (her words, not mine)....made me sick. No person's life is worth another's career, ever.

I'm sure no one would argue with that statement.
However, this is the wrong forum for that discussion.

We're talking rallies and Airstreams here.
