Hasta la Vista!
I would love to have you participate! It's a very relaxing place, with a very relaxing pace. As they say down there, " No Bad Days".
A long drive for you guys, but well worth it if you like the desert and beach all in one place.
remember, it's a loosely organized event with no Rally fees, no reservations, and little to no agenda.

I propose a date of March 15 to March 19, approximately. We can go a day early, or come home a day later, but that's a good time to be there. Not too hot yet, but warm enough to be very comfortable, with still cool nights to sleep with open windows.
The only other alternative is the second weekend in April, roughly April 5 through April 9, 2006
Comments please!

Tecate San Felipe 250

the san felipe 250 is March 10-13, fun to watch but the town gets a little crazy, if people wanted to go early to watch it they need to get early reservations

I have been there during the Tecate Score San Felipe 250. ( twice!)
It's a blast to watch. Start and Finish is right by the Arches at the entrance to town. The ground vibrates like an earthquake when the million dollar trophy trucks take off! Then at night, they parade what's left of their trucks on the Malecon, which is quite fun to see.
There are many side roads that lead to great observation spots, many best used by 4wd only, or at least by a skilled driver with 2WD.
Here's a great flick for those that like desert racing. It's called Dust to Glory, and has excellent footage of the Baja 1000. A must see for motor heads.
( Movie tip courtesy of SilverSurfer)

Our camping spot is south of town by about 10km or so. Very few race people camp that far south. Last time we had maybe 2 or 3 teams camp near by. No shortage on spots to park and camp. They just hopped in their race cars in the morning and took off to the staging area.
Only thing is, traffic is no fun during and after the race. The highway to San Felipe becomes a death trap during that time, lots of "racers" with large pickups and trailers passing each other etc. If you go during the race, wait to leave until all the racers are back in US.

Both proposed dates are good for us. I kind of lean towards the April dates since our kids will be on spring vacation that week and it will be our 22nd wedding anniversary on April 7th. Nothing like celebrating with new friends!

mexican insurance for older vehicles

We can get insurance til the end of this year on our 85 MoHo but after that... we were told no companies insure vehicles over 20 years for anything other than liability. Does anyone have a company that works with older vehicles any info appreciated

Cloud55,
It's a WDAA ( wildly disorganized Airstream Affair). Meaning that you do not need to make reservations, deposits, arrangements, or anything else for that matter. Just let us know whenever you know if you can go, so we can look out for you. San Felipe's motto is 'No Bad Days".

Is it March or April?

We are going to stay longer and want to make reservations at another campground north of town. Have you settled on the dates? We did take the "Thing" exploring and found "Campo Lobos" at km 9 -- it said private property and listed 3 peoples names so we did not go down the road. We also found Rancho Punta Estrella at km 12, which you said was south of the camping spot. Did we find the right spot or miss it? I have some awesome sunset pictures from last week down there that I will try and post in a few days.

I think you missed it. The sign is actually ( hmmm, was there last time we went down there) on the left side of the road. Rancho Punta Estrella is on the right side of the road. This when going South.

km12 sounds about right, though.

Will you stay at the campground north of town the entire time, or stay with us and then move north when everybody leaves?

I am actaully not opposed to trying another site. As long as it's not full of dirt bikes and atv's. Most of the places north of town get really crazy, with all sorts of motor vehicles disturbing your peace and fouling the air with 2-stroke stink.

Which place did you have in mind?

We will stay with you and then move up north. We are getting ready to start building a house at El Dorado Ranch--hopefully it will be started by then...and the campground does unfortunately get a little crazy with ATVs, etc. Have you decided March or April?

El Dorado Ranch is very nice. We toy with this idea every time we go down there. Courtesy parking??

We're still waiting for time-off approval from Didi's work. She will write another e-mail today to hopefully nail down the March dates that are in the Forum Rally calendar. Thanks to all for their patience.
